For those of you who think that dogs can be trusted.

Posted: Oct 26, 2010

Humans are more important than a stupid dog!  I don't care if they think it was neglect.  The fact remains the dog killed and never had shown signs of aggression!  Well guess what???  It sure showed signs of aggression this time, didn't it???

This is just like I thought...  dogs can never, ever, ever be trusted!  EVER!!!!

Too bad.... - mom of 2 dogs

they could not euthanize the idiot parents for leaving the baby where the dog could reach it. I have 2 big dogs (not pits, but I have nothing against them) and I would never leave them alone with a newborn, more because I would be afraid they might try to sit on her or snuggle her too much. This was 100% the parents' fault. I love my dogs and trust them more than I do most people, but the bottom line is they are still carnivorous animals and should be treated as such.

Sometimes male dogs (wild or domestic) will kill the - pups of a litter outside their family group.

Doesn't mean the dog wasn't aggressive, but could be reason why it became so. Plus, let's face it. It was a pit. Aggressive characteristics are what they're bred for, and although domestication can bury those instincts pretty deeply, they're never completely gone.

Size is another issue. Pits are relatively big, and very powerful in relationship to their size. I'm more of a cat person these days, but know that if domestic housecats were the size of pitbulls or German Shepards, they would probably be outlawed as pets. If cats were the size of German Shepards, then what you would basically have as a pet is a young mountain lion.

Agreed 100% - Papillon Mom

Dogs are dogs and will always act like dogs, and due to the breed- and bloodline-specific characteristics passed on through genes, I would never leave a child alone with a pit or any other dog no matter what type.

Thanks for basing your post on common sense instead of knee-jerk emotionalism.

It's the same when neighborhood pets run loose, - form packs, and attack livestock. (sm)

The dog owners, thinking they're perfectly within their rights to let their dogs roam free, say, "Oh, my little Schmoopsie would NEVER kill anything!" No, maybe not while lying on the living room sofa by the fire, but when they get into the pack mentality or the prey drive, all bets are off when it comes to what they might kill.

Animals just do what millions of years of evolution has hard-wired them to do.

Well, kind of cynical and naive to - Papillon mom

group all dogs together based on news articles. There are NO bad dogs, only bad owners. I have had dogs my entire life but it's common knowledge don't leave animals and children unattended. Stupidity kills, and unfortunately in this case the parents' stupidity killed their child. But don't use that as an excuse to be a dog-hater. They're just like cars, sleeping pills, guns, etc. They don't kill people without a HUMAN exercising stupidity.

First let me say I completely agree with you. I also wanted to say that tonight when I came home a man in my neighborhood was walking a gorgeous Papillon who was nine months old. I just love this breed and told him I wish I could have 1,000 of them. So much is said about the potential for dogs hurting people. Look at the thousands of dogs a year who are abused, tortured and killed by people. I agree the situation has to be monitored when their are small children involved. You make an excellent point about cars and guns, etc.

You can not group all dogs together - cl

There are certain breeds that are more likely to be aggressive than others. Pit bulls are known to be so inbred that they are one breed of dog I would never trust. I have been raised around dogs all my life, and large dogs at that. I was raised with English Setters when I was a child, then an English Springer Spaniel, a mixed Lab/Irish Setter, and for the past 13 years a Lab and a Chesapeake Bay Retriever/Lab mix who has recently passed on. I definitely would have trusted any of my dogs in my life around young children, but a three day old child has to be slowly introduced to the dog, as the dog can have jealousy over the new addition getting all the attention. All of my dogs all my life have been very protective of babies, in fact when my sons were infants, the dogs used to sleep in the nursery under the crib and was very protective over my babies. If the baby woke up in the middle of the night and cried, the dog would come and nuzzle me with his nose to wake me up. My latest dog that just passed was the friendliest, sweetest dog you could ask for and he would just lick you to death if you were a stranger, but I never doubted that if someone was ever to be aggressive towards a family member that he would be there to protect. I think this is a very unforunate situation, I would trust my life with most dogs.

I learned the hard way you can never trust a child and a dog no matter how sweet that dog is. Before the incident with a child being bitten by my pitbull I never ever would have thought it. My dog was startled out of sleep so that played a part, but you just can't trust a big dog like that not to hurt someone. I still have him but he stays outside now in a fenced in backyard. I also put a lock on the gate so no child can say oh look at the big dog and go in there. It is locked and I have the key. He is not viscious but he don't like to be approached by strangers and that makes him dangerous. Also he doesn't like for someone to get down in his face. So he is not around kids anymore or actually anyone but me and my husband. He is so sweet but he is sooo strong. That is what makes him dangerous. My sis-in-law and brother-in-law have 2 boston terriers in the house with their baby who is 2 months old now. After the experience I went through I was kind of iffey about them staying in the house with the baby but she said well they are much much smaller than a big pitbull so they can't do the damage a pitbull can. That is true but I still wouldn't leave a baby or child with any dog now no matter the size of the dog. The other day a friend of hers came to visit who had a 1 year old. Well naturally the 1 year old wants to grab at the dog and pull on him and the little dog snapped at the baby. She didn't bite the baby but tried to. I don't know how much damage a boston terrier could cause but I know they can bite like any other dog.

The same for all - Kitty

Just like people so often surprise us and do bad things out of character, so are all living beings vulnerable to such things. I guess it's best to always assume anything could happen.

Such a horrible tragedy. The truth about life is so disillusioning.

Trusted Newscaster Or News Source Anyone?Feb 07, 2017
Does anyone have a news person that they trust to be a real journalist rather than an opinion?  Who is the Tom Brokaw of today's news people?  I watch 3 news outlets, MSNBC, Fox news and CNN and try to get a balanced idea, but it seems that they are all injecting their bias into their reporting.  So far, Chris Wallace seems  to be pretty good on Fox.  I like Morning Joe on MSNBC, but haven't found anyone on CNN, although I am sure there is someone, or at least ...

One Dog Vs. Two DogsApr 05, 2013
We have had our tweenie dachshund girl forabout 10 months.  She is almost 2 years old.  She is dearly loved, so obedient and smart and snuggly.  Lately I have been wondering about getting another dog, solely for the purpose of a playmate for her, so she can wrestle and get more exercise during the day.  I work at home so a lot of her day she is in her bed beside my desk sleeping, or she looks out the window at the yard and watches for dangerous folks near our yard (haha!), gr ...

Dogs With Allergies...Feb 23, 2012
My dogs definitely cannot have poultry or corn, and wheat is questionable.  I am trying to find dental chews/biscuits.  I'm using Zuke's Z-bones right now but the problem is that one of my dogs is just biting/breaking it into chunks and swallowing the chunks, not much good for his teeth and gums!  He chews his crunchy dog food and regular treats so I was hoping maybe I could find some dental biscuits of some sort, but everything I'm finding has wheat or chicken ...

Designer DogsNov 16, 2009
I have a plain old garden variety Rat Terrier. Best known as Teddy Roosevelt's favorite, the RCA dog, and a common dog on farms because they're such good little ratters. But we saw two "Designer Dogs" last week that were so funny. One was a Chug (Chihuahua and Pug combination) and the other two were Puggles (Pug and Beagle combinations.) All of them were cute as could be, but when did mixing breeds stop being mutts and start being Designer Dogs? Is it just because a mutt is a result ...

Does Anyone Else Have Dogs That Are Smarter Than Them?Jul 17, 2010
I live in the sticks so don't have passersby, have no friends or relatives so I don't get company, and work 14 hours a day so I don't have a lot of time for my little canine companions through the week.  Therefore on weekends, we kinda hang out together.  This includes taking them to the store when I go grocery shopping and they wait in the car, people-watching from whatever window they choose to gaze out of.  During the heat of summer, though, I leave them home.&nb ...

One Dog Vs. Two Dogs - Update :)Apr 13, 2013
We adopted a standard dachshund today from the humane society.  I found him on Petfinder.com.  We had to drive about an hour away to get him but oh, what a sweetie.  He is only 8 months old but he isn't hyper at all.  Very laid back for a youngster.  (He hasn't even barked once!)  His tail wags constantly and he loves everybody in the family. But best of all, our tweenie dachshund loves him!  She has engaged him in play over and over.  He is stil ...

New Channel Going To The DogsJul 15, 2013
Plenty of things will grab a dog’s attention: squirrels, tennis balls, funny smells, other dogs. But a TV channel?Absolutely, say the makers of DogTV, the first cable network to deliver 24-hour programming for dogs. The idea, they say, is that flipping on the channel while you go out for the day will keep your pet stimulated, entertained and relaxed. Call it “Sesame Street” for those who will never learn their ABCs.The shows on DogTV are actually three- to six-minute segments f ...

Itchy DogsFeb 19, 2014
Has anyone tried the new "miracle" drug for itchy dogs, Apoquel? It had remarkable results in Europe, and was finally approved for the US in January. My vet is impressed with it, and says he sees results within 4 hours. I was concerned about where the drug is metabolized, since my dog is very old, and I don't want to give him anything that's metabolized in the liver or kidneys. This is apparently very safe, and the only possible reaction is diarrhea which quickly resolves after a da ...

Flea Treatment For DogsDec 02, 2011
Hi Everyone,   What kind of treatment works best for your dogs?  My 3 little doggie children are having the darnest time keeping fleas away.  The last treatment I tried only kept them away for about a week or so; can't think of the name, but it's the one you can get at Walmart.  Was thinking of giving Frontline a try . . .     ...

How To Introduce Dogs To Kids?Jun 11, 2010
I have gotten serious with my boyfriend to the point that we are considering moving in together.  I have 3 children (6, 5, and 3) and he has 2 small dachsunds that are pretty much his world.  My kids are with their dad for the summer and will be back shortly and the only thing I'm worried about is if his dogs will be okay with my kids.  I know one of them is just as loving as she can be, but the other is very picky about certain people.  Everyone I have introduced to her ...

Question About Male DogsJun 02, 2012
I have a male puppy who is about 9 months old. I have only had females so this is a real change for me! He likes to pee on everything. I realize he is marking his turf. The problem is...this is MY turf! If I have him neutered, will that stop this behavior? Also, will it make him less hyper? I know he is a puppy and is supposed to be energetic but it's beyond that. He may just be high-strung but he just does not stop! I am going to have him neutered for the health benefit anyway but was just ...

Shaving Dogs And CatsApr 28, 2013
I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun.  By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Their coat also protects their internal body from shifts of temperature indoors or out. A pet groomer is NOT going to tell you this--they make a good chunk of money shaving hair off pets.  If you don&# ...

Update On The Chickens And My Little Girl DogsJul 05, 2010
The chickens visit us daily.  I had been nervous about letting my dogs out when the chickens were here because the dogs go absolutely bezerk when they are at the window.  It they could break that window and get out there, they probably would.  So a few weeks has passed . . . The dogs sit at the window now and just calmy watch the chickens do their thing.  The other day, 2 of the dogs were in the window and I could not get their attention.  Looked out the window and ...

Floppy-eared Dogs With Ear Infections? Aug 05, 2012
Does anyone have any nutritional advice or home remedy for my mixed breed/predominantly pointer/hound who has chronic ear infections?  My vet gave us this stuff and we are washing his ears out every 2 days.  (Cannot wash more often as it dries his ears out too much).  We also have some ear drops, but he still scratches at his ears like he is being tortured.  There are days when I consider clipping his ears on the top of his head with clothes pins just to keep them aired out.& ...

Warning! Chinese Jerky Making Dogs/cats SickOct 23, 2013
This is BS! (CNN) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a message for veterinarians and pet owners: If dogs or cats get sick after eating jerky pet treats, let us know. The agency says it's received reports of more than 3,600 dogs and 10 cats that got sick after eating jerky pet treats since 2007. Of those cases, the FDA says, more than 580 pets have died. "This is one of the most elusive and mysterious outbreaks we've encountered," said Bernadette Dunham, direc ...
