Question about male dogs

Posted: Jun 2, 2012

I have a male puppy who is about 9 months old. I have only had females so this is a real change for me! He likes to pee on everything. I realize he is marking his turf. The problem is...this is MY turf! If I have him neutered, will that stop this behavior? Also, will it make him less hyper? I know he is a puppy and is supposed to be energetic but it's beyond that. He may just be high-strung but he just does not stop! I am going to have him neutered for the health benefit anyway but was just wondering if I can expect to see any change in him. TIA.

I had a pit bull/dalmation X that was very hyper. I had him neutered, but he still peed on everything and he was still quite hyper. I don't think you'll see much of a change, but all dogs are different. I wish you the best of luck! I have 5 dogs at the moment, and they are all females. I can honestly say I will never own a male dog again.

Thanks everyone - sm

Lots of great advice! I have restricted his area so he isn't allowed through the house if we aren't there to watch him. I have tried rewarding him when he goes outside and giving him a firm "no" when he goes inside but he is very stubborn. Females are much easier to train! I think I will look into some training classes if this keeps up. He does other things, too. He is really hyper and jumps on everyone and everything. If I tell him to stop, he will stop for a second but then goes right back to doing what he wants. I have tried giving him time-outs but that doesn't seem to be working either. He's a yorkie mix and I have heard yorkie's have strong personalities. I think we have to go back to square one and teach him how to behave. He has to learn who is in control here! Thanks again for the great tips. Hopefully, something will work!

First of all, don't forget to ask your vet and/or maybe a training at a pet store if they have some tips for you.

My pup was already neutered by the Humane Society when I brought him home, so not sure if it will help in your case, but would suggest going through with it anyway. Now, since I am practically a hermit (exaggeration), I kept Shadow within view as much as possible, and as soon as he started to squat/lift leg, I would say "Shadow, no," pick him up and put him outside in the grass. Yes, there was more cleaning up to do as there was a trail to wipe up and not just a puddle. As he was urinating outside, I would praise him. It took only a few times of this routine before he got the message, and he has not "marked his turf" in 4 years. Best of luck!

I agree with "my experience". This is a behavior issue and puppy can be trained not to mark. A sharp "NO" when he starts to lift or squat, then give hinm a treat & praise. You do not say what breed your dog is. A high-drive dog may take a bit longer to train. Neutering will not help this behavior. Plus I don't neuter my males until at least 15 months to 2 years for hormonal reasons. Some vets like to neuter or spay at 6 months, but dogs need their hormones for proper bone growth, etc. (my opinion). Before you start correcting this behavior, get a good book and a clicker. There is probably info on Internet if you Google.

Beat his arse!!! LOL Nine months is TOO OLD to be marking in the house! What breed is he? If you are going to neuter, you should neuter ASAP,while he is young, much easier on him. Typically, males are very easy to train (unless it's a small dog). Restrict his SPACE. Do not allow him freedom to roam around AT ALL. This will help a lot. Be consistent. Do not be lazy. If he is looking/sniffing around, take him out. Reward him, but don't go nuts about it. He's probably a wonderful dog with too much freedom. Best wishes, hope you enjoy one another for many years!!

P.S. We do NOT beat our dogs. :)
LOL!! - sm

Yes, 9 months is too old! He was almost 5 months old when we got him so maybe that has something to do with it. You said that small dogs aren't as easy to train. He is a yorkie mix. Not only is he the first male I have had, he is also the first small dog I have had. I can't "beat his arse" because he weighs less than 10 pounds and hardly has an arse! He really is a cute little thing, if only I could break some of his bad habits. I think it will just take time. Thanks again.

You have entered a whole 'nother dimension...small dog world. I have complete empathy for you. I have 2 MALE pugs who, at 9 and 10 years of age, still wear "bellybands" because they mark. Now, the idea behind bellybands are, once they mark and sit in their own pee, they will stop doing it. Not our pugs!! They don't mind at all. LMAO. The have been wearing them FOR YEARS. To preserve their dignity, of course, we call them "man bands." My one little guy looked at me one day and lifted his leg right on the TV! So different from our Rottweilers.

It takes our pugs to get around 4 years old to mellow a bit, so I think that is just natural your little guy (and I'm sure he IS very comical and cute!)is hyper. And, yes, if you adopted him at 5 months and he wasn't trained, that is surely a handicap. Ah...the adventures ahead. How fun!! LOL
I guess I'm in for a long ride! - sm

When we got him, I remember saying "How much damage can a little thing like that do?" I found out the answer! We got him from a pet shop where he was kept in a cage all day so he wasn't taught anything for all that time. I don't know who needs Valium more, them or us! Good luck with your little guys, too.
You got your puppy from a pet shop? - nn
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm sorry but that is horrendous!!! Getting a "cute little puppy from a pet shop" just does not cut it with me. These poor puppies are "inferior" to their breed, bred in puppy mills, where the females may have never even walked on the ground -- their only specific purpose in life is for BREEDING and making someone very wealthy!!! There may have been so much "inbreeding" going on, that this puppy now has characteristics that you may never be able to change. For heaven's sake, people if you are going to get a "purebred puppy," or even a cute little mix, do NOT go to a pet shop. There are enough dogs and puppies that can be adopted through a rescue or a shelter or purchased through a REPUTABLE breeder.
so very true - thanks for posting this

what a shame.

I was given the name and address of the original breeder and was able to check them out for myself. I also know the reputation of the pet store very well, for over 30 years actually. He was with the original owner for over 3 months and was the last puppy left. I took a puppy that no one else wanted and gave him a very good home. I have tried rescues. It takes a long time to get a pet from them. Even then, those pets were abandoned by someone else, probably because they have behavioral problems. Same goes for shelters. I have gotten pets from shelters and had to work for months to break their bad habits. You really shouldn't lump all people and all animals into one category.
I have 2 yorkies, one male - and one female
[ In Reply To ..]
Yorkies are at the top of the list when it comes to being hard at housebreaking. Not sure if you have tried pad training, but that is what we do. The female uses mostly a pad. The male is 6 yrs old, and we just got him. He uses both pads and outside. I have seen others with yorkies who do well with the pads.
We tried the pads - sm

We did try the pads but he thought it was a toy. He chewed it up and made confetti out of it! Thanks for your help, though.

He was constantly going around marking. I hated it. Eventually I let someone take him off my hands that LOVED him and provided him a very good home. He was just too much for me. Mine was mean also. He would try to bite me if I tried to correct him. Everyone would say aww look how cute, and I was thinking yeah if you only knew how mean he is. LOL

I have had boy and girl dogs though mid to large - sm - XXX

breed. Have currently a husky (boy), choc. lab (girl) and a corgi (boy). The husky was a rescue and already housebroken when we got him. Got the lab and corgi as tiny pups and house trained them ourselves, we had 2 other dogs (Schipperkees) (girls) when we got the lab and she trained quickly, and had the lab and husky when we got the corgi. The corgi trained very fast. My DH says it is because the dogs saw the other dogs peeing, etc, outside so knew that is what they were do to their business outside and not inside. I agree that it is easier when you already have a housebrooken dog. Since the corgi was so small we took him out constantly (at least every hour if not every 30 mins) and told him to go pee. Yes it was a pain but it worked. Takes a lot of persistence to get a dog to be housebroken. All 3 of our dogs pee on command now, which is very useful.---

As for neutering....we have always had it done as we have no desire to breed the dogs. I don't know if it calms them down or not, I think it in general makes them want to stay home and not run off if they smell a dog in heat. It is good for girls so they don't get any infections. We had the corgi fixed I think about 5.5 months. He does not pee in the house, never marked his territory or any of that. We do have an issue with the cat peeing in the hall now, she was a little upset when we brought home another dog two years ago and won't let us forget it apparently, but that is another can of worms.

Aww, don't be so quick to judge. I work in pug rescue, and am well aware of what it takes to keep the breed pure as well as for our rotties. I was just in a pet shop and was sick to my stomach at the little pups in those glass cages.

However, I consider this rescue also. And, if someone has the heart to go and get a 5-month-old puppy, who is at a disadvantage to being adopted anyway because of age, shame on YOU for judging them.

You don't need to jump on me about puppy mills, etc. I live in puppy mill land and am involved in activism to have these closed down. I have a heart for all dogs who are mistreated though.

Thank you - sm

I was given the name and location of the breeder for this puppy so I was able to check them out for myself. I took a puppy that no one else wanted and gave him a really good home. I doubt that the poster above knows that all breeds are different and it doesn't matter where they come from...they have different personalities. Sometimes, private breeders are not able to find homes for all the puppies in the litter and the pet stores help find a home for them. In my situation, he was with the original owner for a few months. It's a shame some people are so quick to judge.
I really hope you are saying this to someone else - sm - XXX
[ In Reply To ..]
and not me. I was not judging the OP at all and said nothing about puppy mills either. If people think I am judging then you are way off the mark. I was just stating the facts of my 3 dogs. I have done many a rescue, 4 so far, 2 huskies, a golden retriever and mutt (lab/shepard mix), none were puppies (1-2 years old) and some were more housebroken then others but it just took persistence to get them housebroken. All I was commenting on was how they were to housebreak and that it is easier when you already have a dog in the house that is housebroken. It just takes a little longer if you don't have another dog that is already housebroken.

I cannot believe anyone thought I was looking down on the OP because her dog was five months old, and judging her. I was stating the facts of my experience with my dogs. All I said was you had to be persistent...is this wrong????
Probably meant to go above... - What it's worth.

males - breeder here

[ In Reply To ..]
Hi there, I have 3 intact males, 4 intact bitches, and 3 altered pets here. I find the intact males behave better than the fixed ones.

First of all, when males reach puberty they start to mark. He should be in trouble for doing so! Clean the area with a cleaner that is specially made for urine stains/smells. Take him outside a lot so he doesn't have the urge to pee in the house.

Second of all, if you have a hyper dog, which is kind of normal if the dog is only 9 months old, then your dog doesn't seem to get enough exercise. A puppy needs several shorter exercise sessions a day. Take him on longer walks at least twice a day. Have chew toys for him. Knuckle bones are great and so are Kong toys.

There really is no health benefit in neutering a dog. If you get your dog neutered, it shouldn't be done before the age of 1 anyway- for health benefits! Dogs neutered prior to that age grow taller, they have a shorter life, and they can get cancer as much as any dog that hasn't been neutered.

And yes, I am against buying pets in a pet store. Dogs should be bought from responsible breeder who health test their dogs (OFA-CERF-thyroid, cardiac testing...etc.).
