Do you ever just feel like a complete slob working from home?

Posted: Sep 27, 2011

The beauty of working at home is that we get to dress comfortable and I love that, but I've been notcing lately when going to my kids different sports functions, school functions, etc. that I am constantly in a t-shirt, jeans, and flip flops.  I do put make up on when I go out and I brush my hair, but I don't spend a lot of time on my hair anymore.  And I can put my face on in 10 minutes.  I've recently become single again and all of sudden I'm looking around at the other moms at these functions and I'm thinking maybe I need to put a little more effort.  Before I got into MT, I worked in banking and I always dressed up, fixed my hair, makeup just so.  I always looked nice.  When I worked in the office as a MT, I always looked nice.  In the last 15 years or so since I've been working at home, I'm just a complete slob.  Faded T-shirts and jeans, capris, shorts.  I don't even own a really nice pair of shoes anymore.  A pair of flats, two pairs of tennis shoes, and flip flops.

So where does a person start in creating a new look on a budget?  I started exercising, but I need some new clothes.  I don't have many clothes to begin with it.  Like I said T-shirts, jeans, shorts, etc.  I work hard and spend my money on my kids and not myself, but now with being single again I'm thinking I need to spend a little on myself.

The same realization hit me about 6 months ago sm - MIMT

I am not newly single, but definitely gained weight, no make-up, sweats, flip-flops, etc. I joined an exercise class, have been losing weight, and needed new clothes. You have a few choices. Either try your local Salvation Army (you would be surprised at what you can find there and for cheap!) or do what I did, put aside $100 and with clearance sales, got myself 1 pair of jeans, 3 shirts, 1 pair of shoes, and a purse. I make sure every day now to wear my new clothes to work (even though I am at home) and to put some makeup on. Feeling a whole lot better about myself! I just decided that I was worth it. My kids have tons of clothes, so why shouldn't I have a few decent outfits?

I realized that too! My kids got all this new stuff for school and I sit here in shorts and tanks and sweats! Unfortunately for me, I have a Penney's card. I went one weekend and I found some jeans in the clearance section. I found a couple of shirts that were on a really good sale. They have also been having doorbuster sales and those you can usually get some things BOGO half off or something.

Usually I do end up at our local thrift stores and yes, you would be surprised, but they have been really hiking their prices here lately. Sometimes I just need the thrill of actually purchasing something brand new for just me!

Hi. Try the American Cancer Society Thrift shops - I just bought a complete outfit on one of their 50% off days - it's really dressy and just what I needed for $14 (pants, jacket and blouse). They generally have quality items. Don't feel bad - my idea of dressing up any more is putting on a bra when I know the UPS guy is coming by!!! I'm going on a trip which forced me to get some actual real clothes - no sweats allowed. You can find a lot of stuff at upscale consignment shops and Goodwill too!

It doesn't take much at all to dress up a little bit..s/m - Meerkat

You can find really cute stuff at Goodwill and thrift stores. Sometimes even brand-new with tags!

Say you're working in jeans, a T-shirt, and flip-flops: You have to go pick up a kid at soccer, maybe watch the end of the game. Tuck in the T, put on a nice belt. Put a cute little jacket over the Tee - denim with some studs or sparkles, or corduroy. Anything cute and/or dressy. If it's cold, a pretty knitted scarf. If not, a choker necklace or something that stands out.

You can dress up jeans with anything with heels. Clogs are great, too.

For the face, I really skip most of it. Maybe a little concealer on the ol' eye-bags, but mostly just a little blush, lipstick, and I'm good to go. I don't bother with eye makeup if outdoors, 'cause I always have sunglasses on. If indoors, I just hit the eyelashes with the eyelash curler, a quick dab of mascara, and I'm out the door.

If wearing shorts or a miniskirt, try over-the-knee socks... they're great! Legwarmers are great over those socks, or tights, if it's cool out and you still want to wear shorts or a miniskirt. Wool tights are really hot in fall/winter right now, too. Also, check out boot spats! All the rage, and they tie in your tights, leggings, socks, etc. really well with the top of the boot. They can also make a loafer look like a boot! There are lots of really cute handmade spats on the website Etsy.

If you hair is longish, just brush it and put on some dangly earrings. If it's in a ponytail, just add a pretty scrunchie or a fancy "jeweled" ponytail holder, and that dresses it up.

Wow! Maybe you should come be my personal stylist! - OP

clothes, but I have some friends (in their 50s) who always seem to look great, and one really IS a "fashionista". The other is just one of those people who could cut a hole in a green garbage bag, pull it on over her head, and pull off the "look" with the proper accessories! ;D

But what I started noticing, and what they confirmed when we talked about it, was they got a lot of their ideas by studying some of the cute trendy clothing the teens and even pre-teens were wearing. They seem to use lots of contrasting patterns and styles, and combine them to get unique looks. (i.e., combining a denim jacket with really frilly, girly chiffon skirt, for example.)

You can do combinations of more age-specific clothing and the trendier young-people's stuff, and come up with your own unique style.

I have one friend who always wears really frilly girly stuff. It looks gorgeous on her. When I try to copy that look, something just ain't right. I think mainly because it just doesn't fit my personality. HOWEVER, I can make it work by cutting back on some of the "girly" (but not all of it), and then adding "edgy" to the look. Stuff that's sort of got a punk or rocker hallmark, such as black, or studs. Or a single clip-in hair extension.... in bright pink or fuschia!

There are also lots of cute shoe-accessories that can either dress up (or punk-out) regular street shoes. Often called "shoe harnesses", there are cute little clip-on chains with jewels, or with high heels and nylons, an ankle bracelet can look amazing! Or you can get black leather and stud accessories to add to plain ol' boots, and can change according to your mood and your outfit.

I'm 60, but I don't believe that should relegate me to the "old ladies" section of the department store. In fact, I much prefer some of the things I find at "Forever 21"!
One more thing about clip-in hair extensions... - (fake hair, of course)... (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
The hair in the clip-in extensions is totally straight. That would be fine if my hair was totally straight, but it's wavy. Here's what I do to make the extension hair blend right in with my own hair, and make it look like I streaked it: Just BRAID the extension, then soak it with water, and hang it up and let it dry. I usually put 2 of the same color together and then braid them pretty tight. I just store them braided, so they don't get all tangled up. (I use the 18" extensions, since that's how long my hair is). Then when you unbraid them and clip them in, and brush them into your own wavy hair, it blends right in, and doesn't look fake.

(A crimping iron might get an interesting look too, but I haven't tried that yet. I worry I might melt the nylon hair... that would suck!)

I feel that when I take my shower it's some big event and I should send out - party invitations

LOL. I was just thinking about that the other day. I spend my days in comfort. I don't brush my hair everyday because its too frizzy and brushing makes me look like the bride of Frankenstein. Instead I wet me fingers and run them through. I also use Organix Moroccan oil, mostly cos I love the smell and it keeps my hair soft. I don't wear makeup. Last time I did was in 2004 and I felt like my face was so clogged.

As for clothes, I have a ton of nearly new clothes worn only once or twice cos I gained so much weight. The great thing though is I finally have lost a whole 37 pounds in the last year - the last time I weighed what I do was 1999 - and I am finally fitting into my black jeans again. However, the only time I go out is to run to the grocery store, so my clothes will remain new for a long time.

But yeah, I feel like a total slob, but I'm comfortable.

Shower, what is that? Been so busy lately - sm - Dirty slob MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I forget to shower, but that happens when you work 2 jobs (one outside home) and work from 5am to midnight every day with maybe 2 hours for cooking, laundry, errands, etc. But I try to remember to shower every other day since I am out in public most days, don't want BO. I dress comfortably, capri pants, or long pants, blouse or a T-shirt. Nothing fancy, look nice some days, slobby others, just depends on the state of the laundry that day. But I don't worry about what others think, if they don't like my sweatpants that day they don't look at me!

Working At Home With A 3-year-oldApr 19, 2013
I can no longer afford daycare for my 3-year-old daughter.  I am literally working around-the-clock, usually waiting for work, just to pay bills.  I am a single parent and have no one here to help watch her, so I need some ideas on what I can do to keep her busy while I work.  I am feeling so guilty not playing with her all day or even just sitting down watching Dora with her!  I feel like a bad mom.  So far today she has watched some TV, colored, played with her toys, b ...

New Tax Law For People Working At HomeFeb 21, 2014

The only problem I have now is how do I find the square footage of the office?? ...

Advice Needed For Working At Home With A ToddlerOct 16, 2013

I Do Not Feel Like Working TodayOct 07, 2013
I don't feel like working today.  But I will work anyway.  Because I have to pay for rent, food, health care, child care, and cell phones.  Then once I've taken care of all the people who just don't want to work, I will keep working because I have my own house payment, food, health insurance, and cell phone to pay for.  Because I think it's wrong to expect someone else to pay for all those things for me when I am able to work and provide for myself. ...
