Advice needed for working at home with a toddler

Posted: Oct 16, 2013

I have a 3-1/2-year-old child, but I cannot afford daycare or preschool so she is staying home with me while I work.  I feel so guilty that I cannot afford school for her and I feel even more guilty for being home all day but not really being able to interact much with her as I'm working.  She has a few educational games, watches TV, colors, plays, but I feel like I'm not stimulating her mind or helping her develop the way she should.  Any advice on other things I can do for her while I'm working?

A tot needs your attention more than they need schooling. Is there any way you can work at night when Dad gets home, or whatever arrangement you have with the father?

She totally knows she is being ignored and 3-year-olds little brains don't understand no matter how hard you try. It's all about them needing you, and that's all they know. And they're correct, they do need you.

I hope you can find a way to spend time with her, playing, laughing, things like that.

Please don't take this the wrong way. I do not know your full situation and certainly do not mean to sound judgemental or critical. I fully appreciate that you love your child and want to do what is best for her, so I am not trying to criticize you in any way.

That said, it really is not possible for a child to teach themselves. They must have some guidance, leadership, and direction from someone - even if they are occupied with an educational game or activity. They can occupy themselves, yes, but not teach themselves or guide their own development... and there is a difference IMO.

Is it possible for you to rearrange your schedule in any way, even for part of the day? Can you work early morning before she wakes up, during nap time, or after bed? Can you do a split shift? I don't know how many hours a day you are trying to work and I would not suggest trying to do a full 8-hour shift while she is sleeping or you will just be a zombie during the time she is awake, but ANY time you can work while she is asleep equals that much time you can spend with her. Do you know anyone else with small children that you could form some sort of agreement with to trade off watching each other's kids? Is there a church or other community center, etc. that offers a mother's day out program? Sometimes, those are free in exchange for you working there once in awhile...

Do not feel guilty -- you love your child and are doing the best you can with your circumstances and she will know that - but get creative with your schedule and with daycare options and see if you can find some extra time to spend with her. You will both benefit!

If you are able to have flexible hours - sm - XXX

I worked as an IC when mine were little (they were 2 and 3 when I started my first MT job...had 3 part-time IC jobs by six months in as a newbie). I basically only worked when they were sleeping, so up early if necessary, during naps, and late into the night (12-2am at times). My DH would cook dinner (not much anymore though, lol), I would feed the kids, etc. It was hard but doable. I could sometimes squeeze in an hour or two when they were up if I had them watching a disney movie maybe but generally I did not work when they were up, just not possible with two little girls running around the house. But don't feel bad, you have to do what you have to do, but if you are an employee I would either work some flex hours out/split shift or become an IC with no set hours. I have done both over the years, but prefer IC as my kids still have me hopping at 13 and 15.

Advice Needed, Please!!!Jun 19, 2013
My daughter (I'll call her Jane) is entering the 3rd grade.  We moved here at the beginning of the last school year and one of the first girls that she got to know (I'll call her Sue) seemed okay to me at first.  Sue invited Jane over to her house almost right away.  I was happy she was already making new friends, so I said sure.  I got her over there and the house was in pretty bad disrepair, there were animals everywhere, and it smelled, but I talked to both ...

Alcoholic Friends ... Advice NeededJan 31, 2010
I have friends (a couple) who, it is getting very obvious, are alcoholics.  I don't see them for months at a time and recently met them and a few others out at a pub.  - The woman, about a third into the evening, became belligerent and was bascially screaming their personal business out for a few hours and ruining the evening for the rest of us and those around us.  (It's kind of complicated why I didn't leave, but too long to get into.) Anyway, long story sho ...

Working At Home With A 3-year-oldApr 19, 2013
I can no longer afford daycare for my 3-year-old daughter.  I am literally working around-the-clock, usually waiting for work, just to pay bills.  I am a single parent and have no one here to help watch her, so I need some ideas on what I can do to keep her busy while I work.  I am feeling so guilty not playing with her all day or even just sitting down watching Dora with her!  I feel like a bad mom.  So far today she has watched some TV, colored, played with her toys, b ...

New Tax Law For People Working At HomeFeb 21, 2014
When itemizing I always took the bills including internet, water, gas and others, added those up and then you took a percentage. That has changed for this year. Just heard on TV you take the square footage of your office (or where you would work) and multiple that x 5.00 to get the total amount you can deduct. The only problem I have now is how do I find the square footage of the office?? ...

Is Not Reporting A Missing Toddler Child Abuse? Jul 15, 2011
I have listened to commentators, lawyers and jurors in Casey Anthony case and I am unable to understand how if a child goes missing and it is not reported this is not abuse.  Wouldn't the primary person providing care for a child need assistance to look for the child at a certain point and if that person didn't get proper help from authorities in a timely manner and the child was harmed or killed would that be neglect/ab ...

Mexican national and previously-deported illegal alien Francisco Javier Chavez skipped a court appearance last week, after a California sheriff’s office released him. Hello all.  I need all the prayers I can get.  I know there are those with worse situations than myself but for me my situation is getting unbearable.  I am an MT trying to help make ends meet with almost no work lately.  My husband makes the bulk of the money but the money I do make helps to fill in the gaps where his paycheck isn't enough.   I just need prayer for direction and for God to open a door for us to get out of this vicious cycle of barely having enough ...

Newly released emails from Wikileaks show Hillary Clinton staffers debating how they can best use the death of a black man to further their agenda. The email began as a request for an essay by Clinton from Marie Claire who was partnering with Harvard University on a study about women and guns but it quickly devolved into brainstorming ideas on how to push the campaign’s anti-gun and racial narratives. The team began discussing an article published in “The Guardian&r ...

By STEPHEN HAWKING And LEONARD MLODINOWAccording to Viking mythology, eclipses occur when two wolves, Skoll and Hati, catch the sun or moon. At the onset of an eclipse people would make lots of noise, hoping to scare the wolves away. After some time, people must have noticed that the eclipses ended regardless of whether they ran around banging on pots.Ignorance of nature's ways led people in ancient times to postulate many myths in an effort to make sense of their world. But eventually, peo ...

Wise Words Never More Needed Than NowJul 18, 2012
I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. (Colossians 2:4). Do you listen in on God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself? (Job 15:8). For all that is in the world--the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions--is not from the Father but is from the world (1 John 2:16). For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice (James 3:16). Eloquent words are not fitting for a fool; ev ...
