I need suggestions on clothes brands - I hate shopping and when I do, I like to get in, try on and get out.  I am 60 years old..... I am 5 feet 9 inches tall, 160 pounds - anybody have a suggestion for a line of clothes that fits decent?  Most tops are too short so that when I bend over, my back sticks out.  I need a 34 inch inseam on pants, so most "outfits" don't work because the pants are too short.   I like classic clothes, bright colors - kind of a "khaki"and polo shirt style, but I like to wear something more stylish now and then.  Anybody have any suggestions.  As a transcriptionist, I don't need to tell you that I have a limited budget.  I do like Coldwater Creek and Christopher and Banks, but again, either too expensive and by the time they are on sale, my sizes are picked over too much.  Any ideas?

Why do you need designer clothes? - see msg pls

Not sure why you feel you need high-end designer clothes. Have you tried K-mart, Walmart, Kohl's, places like that? They carry "low-end" "designer" clothing like Jacklyn Smith, Faded Glory, White Stag. They cater to a variety of sizes and shapes. Sounds like you mostly need a longer version of a top, perhaps tunic-type.

If you are wanting the higher-end designer clothes, you could try outlet malls. You may have to drive for one if you live in a rural area, though.

the poster never said anything about high-end designer clothes - sm

She's fielding suggestions about clothing lines that may be her style and fit her shape. (!)

Sorry, I was not clear on that - see msg

I said that because the 2 she mentioned were highish-end, so I figured she hadn't checked the lower-end guys. Apologies if she has.
I understand. I think OP even mentinoed that those - labels were too expensive.

I thought she was just giving us an idea about what styles she likes (not necessarily the ones she can afford). :)

For pants, try Old Navy or Target--sm - anon

Both have varying inseams. I am around your height and weight (a little over on both) and have had reasonable luck at both places for jeans, etc. Shirts can often to be hit or miss but I often find T-shirts cut longer at Wal-Mart. For a few nicer things, if I can find shirts on sale at Lands End or LL Bean, I purchase a few from them. Both also are eligible for cash back with ebates although Lands End is more aggressive with their discounts.

Thank you! - Lana

I appreciate the suggestions. I usually don't find Target clothes to fit me, but maybe it's time to take a second look. I have ordered from Eddie Bauer, but now it seems their styles are more "form-fitting" - I liked it better when I had the option of choosing looser fitting clothes. Just the fit that I like.
I guess my question was more for brand names - like if you can always head to a particular section in a store (such as Herbergers, Kohls, etc.) and know that those clothes will fit you well (and be well made). I like K-Mart clothes, but in buying sweaters, they are usually too short for my liking, except for the occasional one that shows up on the rack.....
I guess it's just wishful thinking that we could all like the same fit and style of clothes - I will keep trying....

I hear you, Lana! - Also Tall

Nothing gets me more upset than looking through stacks of jeans and pants that come in different lengths, only to find out they have none in tall. If they are going to offer different lengths they should make them all available. The sales people I spoke to at a few of our stores last year said their managers refuse to stock them because they don't have much of a need for them, and they wouldn't sell. I was so frustrated at one of the stores I walked up to the sales person and told her I refuse to waste my time looking through any more stacks of pants to no avail, and asked if there was any hope of finding them in tall. She was sympathetic and said she also felt it was not right. If I wear flat shoes, sometimes I can get away with some brands. Good luck to you!

My most recent pants I found at Family Dollar. But I need more like 32-inch pants, not 34-inch. When I was young and working at a large corporation, I needed a raincoat. I went to Hudson's (now Macy's) to find one. Out of 150 different raincoats in size 10, I had a choice of exactly two with long enough arms. One was ugly and the other over-priced. I bought the over-priced one and headed into the mall where I encountered a survey-taker working for Hudson's asking how I thought the shopping experience could be improved. Great timing! It made me feel really good to vent about how they didn't carry nearly enough clothes with long enough sleeves. Come on, if the material is there, things can usually be shortened. But if it isn't, or if the cuffs are trimmed close, the sleeves are impossible to lengthen. JC Penney used to be my go-to place for coats and suits once I gave up finding them in the mall.

I have the same problem - short shirts, short pants - wheres_my_job

I've got to go shopping for clothes here in a heartbeat - Here's a low-end "designer" (I think it's just a brand, not an actual designer) that seems to work for me - Jones of New York. I've gotten "tall" pants from Lane Bryant that were long enough also.

Try Cathy Daniels and Sonoma at Kohl's. I have tops in those brands that are long enough (I'm 5'10"). I also have several pairs of Cathy Daniels' capris that fit well and are long enough not to look like knee pants. They seem to be nice quality to be so cheap and wash well. Kohl's has sales every day, and Wednesday is senior day with a 15% discount for 60 and above and you get the discount even with sale/clearance prices.

St. John's Bay at Penney's has tops that have always been long enough for me.

Lee's jeans and twill pants for tall sizes have a 34" inseam and are carried at both Kohl's and Penney's.

Try the outlet stores. Once you know the size they are very consistent, so order online with their sales. Try local consignment shops, Marshall's, and TJMaxx, too.

Quality clothing costs more, but it looks better and lasts a lot longer. Years longer.

It is untrue that it has to be more expensive. I have a whole closet full of JNY, Lauren, Coldwater Creek, and other high quality classics that I got for next to nothing.

Have had good luck at TJMaxx or Marshalls if available in your area. Am also tall, found some JNY nicer looking jeans that were long enough and the Lauren shirts seem to run a bit longer too. May not be the current year's styles but much cheaper. Takes some time to sort through and try on but worth it last year when I needed a couple of decent outfits last year.

I have also had some luck on eBay if you know a specific brand style and size that fits you, search for that on eBay.

I recommend blair.com and greatergoodnetwork.com. When you first take a look at Blair website, you might think they carry frumpy clothing and some of it is, but some of it is actually very attractive, very wearable and high quality for the price. Their sizes tend to run larger. GreaterGoodNetwork.com is a network of stores that are for good causes. They have some unique and artsy stuff including clothing all at very good prices. Definitely recommend GreaterGoodNetwork.com for unique tops, jackets, and skirts without spending a lot of money yet contributing to good cause/s.

Fit true to size every time. Check on line Lastcall.com, even EBay as they can be pricey elsewhere.

I get my clothes from Woman Within. They aren't fancy, but are nice and sturdy. They come all the way from petite to tall in length.
