2013 trip

Posted: Jul 12, 2012

I will be turning 60 in July 2013 and I am taking myself on a trip somewhere for about 10 days.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I do not want to go back to Hawaii or anywhere in Europe.  I have a doggie day care at my home so I will have up to $8000 earmarked for a good time.  I do not care for hiking or museums or mountains.  I do like the water and have been on a cruise in the past.  Thought about AmTrack trip somewhere.

Suggestions?  Anything you have enjoyed, would you do a group, a tour?  I do not mind traveling alone, but I do have some possibility of someone coming with me.  I am a widow so no husband will be going.  Would love to hear any suggestions you have.  Thank you.

A trip up the Natchez trace...starting in New Orleans, but be ready for the heat! (or go backwards and end in New Orleans!) Would say leaf tour of the northeast but July is too early. Alaskan cruise. Hey, I just sent you part of my bucket list. Do enjoy yourself on your sixtieth. Just had mine and worked, lol.

We recently went on a private tour of four cities under the direction of my Chinese teacher - a native of China and a new US citizen. There were young and old on our trip, single people and couples; it was a lovely group of about 20 people, extremely well-managed. We had a blast! It was $3000 per person (this included airfare, meals, admission to attractions, etc., as well as domestic flights and trains in China). They will be making two trips to China in 2013.

What about Australia? I went a few years back and absolutely fell in love. I'd move there if my kids were all grown! Anyway, just a little suggestion :)

If you like beaches and the ocean, nothing can beat a cruise in - the South Pacific. nm

if it were me, I may be tempted not to come back, considering all the goings on and non goings on here in OUR country. :-)

Train across Canada - is supposed to be nice

no idea on the cost though.

Caribbean - mt1347

If you've never been to the Caribbean, you might want to vacation there. I would choose lesser known islands for more peace and quiet, but that's up to you. I don't know where you live, but keep in mind if you fly half way round the world to Australia or New Zealand, you will spent almost a full day just flying, then have to deal with jet lag and it would be another entire day flying back, so the travel itself eats into your vacation time. I'd get a luxury suite and get a massage and facial every day instead of giving the money to the airlines.

If you wait a couple months - you could tour New England.

We rented a car and did our own tour. The states are small enough that we were able to see parts of six of them. Traveling alone, I think I'd rather take a tour, but if you're adventuresome and research online beforehand, there's lots to experience there. Have fun! Happy Birthday!

Did your tour include Maine? My husband and I are going to Maine for a pre-move vacation next June, and I'm SO excited. I'm hoping to check out the surrounding areas and, if all goes well, moving there in late 2013/early 2014. If your tour included Maine, might I ask what highlights you found that we should also check out when we go? TIA!!!

My plumber highly recommended - New Zealand...

but it takes a long time to get there.

SW corner only - just enough to say we visited Maine.

It was raining the whole time, but being from NW WA, we're used to that. We got as far as Portland and Westbrook before cutting across to New Hampshire. Had a great lobster dinner. Drove by Pres. Bush's Kennebunkport home. Lighthouses, crashing seas, etc. Very beautiful. Lots of antique stores. We do have friends who made Maine their sole vacation destination and they drove all over -- loved it. A lot less congested with tourists. :) Enjoy your visit!

Oh! Maine! Can I go with you? LOL! We were so fortunate to have visited Maine a few years ago and it was wonderful! I would suggest a drive up the coast. We stopped at Ogunquit {oh-GUN-quit}which I loved - beautiful beach town with many little tourist shops and beautiful scenery. Also, Kennebunkport as someone else mentioned. We had delicious crab cakes there...we walked around the town...beautiful houses, flowers, more tourist shops, and the smell of the sea. I got goosebumps when, as we entered a town, we saw signs stating "Established in 1620" and so on. We stayed at The Lucerne Inn in Lucerne, Maine. Wow! Quaint and beautiful! We had a fireplace in our room. Another definite place to visit would be Bar Harbor - so many things to do there! Acadia National Park - must do! Lubec - eastern most point in the US where you see the rising of the sun first! If I think of more, I will write again. Enjoy!

It was their 5th wedding anniversary and they went to Cuba, which is against the law; but, of course, they got away with breaking the law. According to the Treasury Dept. spokesperson, they were on a "cultural exchange."
