Anyway to make spare cash for an at home MT

Posted: Jul 8, 2013

I would really love to know if anyone has figured out a way to bring in extra income while working at home.  See lots of ads but I am afraid they are scams.  Any legit way to work at home to supplement my MT income that keeps going down.  Frown

You'd be surprised what people are looking for. I've even started selling collectible stuff (old comic books, etc). One month I made an extra $700. :O

Are you a dog lover? I do dog sitting. Sometimes for the day, sometimes overnight, sometimes for a week. I try to do only 1 at a time, but have had up to 3. They entertain themselves, hang out on the floor next to me while I work. It is company for me and them also. I have about 6 regulars, but have had about 17 over a 5 year period of time. They supply food, kennels, toys, whatever. You supply the love and attention.

Something to consider - sm

I live in an area where there are a lot of elderly people. I have thought about doing their food shopping and other errands for them, or take them shopping or run errands if they are able to walk well enough--beauty parlor, whatever.

Question for dog sitter - Old Pro

Do you ever sit Dobermans, Rottweilers, pit bulls and/or chow-chows? I cannot believe how much "dog discrimination" I find in the world against these breeds. I'm just curious. Good luck to you--sounds like you have a good thing going.

Pit bulls - I have

I have a Jack Russell/Pit bull combination. Sweetest thing I have. Most of my dogs sleep with me, but this one has been raised to sleep in her kennel so she goes in by herself even though I told her she could sleep with me if she wanted. She would then get a treat once she goes in, I left the door open and never heard a sound of her all night (except her snoring). Have not had any of the others though. I have retrievers, labs (black and yellow) and 3 cavalier king Charles, and some poodles and poms, and had an English Setter (they put him "down" in Feb) and he thought he was a lap dog. It is a good thing for me, and we then walk the 2-1/2 blocks to the nursing home and visit. Have a lot of business in the winter (long weekends) as we are a big hockey town and lots of families go out of town for hockey games. And we are a town of only 2000 people so I know most dog people, so it was totally "word of mouth" that I was a dog sitter. Good job.

Many people are afraid of them. I see them frequently when I am out walking and I always pet them. One even jumped up and licked my face! My vet thinks that chows bite the most. I would love to have one, but some family members don't want one. I have always liked big, strong dogs. (A friend says "You like the biter dogs!") I don't think that's true. The worst bite I ever had was from a collie. Yep, that's right--"Lassie" bit me!
Speaking as an ex-dog groomer - I would have to agree with your vet

That of the purebreds, chows are unusually disinhibited about biting. Of course, given their coats (and the fact that said coats are so often neglected), groomers don't exactly see the better facets of chow personalities.

Very oddly, though, we tended to find -- of all things -- lab mixes the most unpredictable about biting! Never purebred labs, and by NO means, of course, all lab mixes, but enough that it was noticeable. Never did really figure out what THAT was all about!

We had a few pits, dobies, and rottweilers come in for baths and nail trims, and I don't remember any of them being a problem. The couple of pits we did now and then were real sweethearts.

Only thing is, I do believe it's true that pits can't be trusted around cats. (Though I believe that statistically a cat's odds are a bit better with a pit than with a Jack Russell! Still, that's not a matter of being "vicious dogs" -- it's closer to being along the lines of "I wouldn't trust my cats with a pet gerbil, either!")

I really appreciate your insight. I have two friends who are vets, one in general practice and the other an exotic animal researcher (think research on black mamba venom). But he was also in general practice before becoming so interested in exotic research. Anyway, both of them told me that chows would just bite with no reason and with no warning. I have a social friend who went to a party. The host told her to leave her coat on a bed in the bedroom. She went in (it was dark), left the coat and suddenly heard this growling. The owner's chow had gotten out of the room it had been locked in. It backed up friend up to the wall and stood there baring its teeth at her for about half an hour until my friend was missed and the chow's owner (who was mortified) came and locked the chow up again. Needless to say, my friend is now petrified of chows. I always wanted a Doberman as a kid, but my mother was afraid of them, called them "killers." Strangely, she had never had a bad experience with one or even been near one face to face. (She probably saw something in a movie or something.) I would not trust the Dobies or Rotties around a cat. While they might think they were "playing," I would fear for the fate of the cat. I know that pits have a horrible reputation but the ones I know are sweet. My hairdresser has one and the only danger you are in from Daisy is that she might lick you to death. I like Jack Russells, think they are very smart, but will stick with my big guys!

I had a rescue giant dobie. He was beautiful, and I have a picture of him on my desk. The first night I slept on the couch to monitor him and my elderly mix and cat. He woke me up in the night, nose pressed against mine, making growling noises. Turns out he only wanted to go out, but I have to admit it took a few hours off my life. :) He turned out to be the gentlest dog I've ever had. My mix was nearly deaf and nearly blind at the time, and the dobie took such good care of him that I got jealous because my little mix turned to him for comfort. I also had a cat, who would walk up to the dobie while he was eating, and the dobie would back up and stand patiently and let the cat inspect/eat the food in his bowl. I miss him.

Thank you for such a wonderful recollection about your Dobie. They are such wonderful, gentle dogs. I especially liked that he was nice with the cat! :) What a sweetheart he must have been!

I'm not going to bore you with tales of my Dobie - although I could :) - but I was thinking about your saying there's discrimination against some breeds. When the rescue brought him to me, he was skin and bones and had acne all over his nose from trying to get something to drink from plastic antifreeze bottles. I took him to my vet the next day, and the vet stood in the door, on alert, until I convinced him that it was safe to come in. Shocking, really. From then on, I took him to another vet in the practice who had Dobies himself.

Oh, they would not bore me--I love Dobies and could listen to Dobie stories all day. Here is an (aggravating and true) chow-chow story. Right here in this huge city there is a vet who makes it very clear to people who own chows that he will treat them as puppies, but once they become adults, he will not take them as patients. He is genuinely afraid of them. He may have had a bad experience, but it just rubbed me the wrong way that he would turn a dog away because of its breed. People get strange notions about dogs--I have a cousin who was in the Army Rangers in Vietnam, about as dangerous a job as you can get--but he is absolutely terrified of Rottweilers. He will not come to see me or go to family outings if he thinks there is any chance he will encounter a Rottie. And no, he has never been bitten or had a bad experience. Strange--sad.

I bet you'd just love our Giant Schnauzer. She weighs about 85 pounds and scares so many people when she doesn't know them, but she really is such a gentle sort! Her bark is definitely worse than her bite (well, she doesn't bite) and I feel grateful every day that I have her here protecting me and keeping me company, with our two cats of course! :)
I am sure I would like your Giant Schnauzer - Old Pro

They are great dogs! I am sure she is a gentle giant. People seem to be afraid of some dogs because they are large. I have been bitten a collie, a weimaranar, and several times by a chihuahua. Somehow chihuahuas seem to hate me, not sure why!

Just saw the list you posted thurs of wealthiest politicians. I have no quarrel with the opinion that some politicians enrich themselves in office.  My concern is with the SuperPACs being unleashed in this election.  SuperPACs are making ads that are influencing elections.  Newt was doing well until Mitt's SuperPAC spent millions on ads. His popularity then dropped rapidly.  The SuperPACs are backed by big money whose goal is to get what THEY want, not what is good ...
