State of mind when praying

Posted: Jul 24, 2014

I was talking with my friend about good, bad, evil, etc and he was telling me how negativity holds things back and that the evil spirits feed off of negativity and how the Creator is good and that the way to fight evil is to be more positive, love, etc. (not exactly those words and it is late and I'm going by memory).  Anyway...that got me to thinking about my prayers and how a lot of times when I pray I am worried, a lot of times crying praying for a job for my husband, help with our financial struggles, etc.  Many times when I pray I am so worried.  Sometimes I try and remember just to pray to thank the Creator for everything we have in our lives and that we are in good health and thankful to have Him in our lives, guiding us.  But for the most part when I am praying about a situation I am very worried/stressed.  Anyway, to make a long story short, what are your opinions regarding a state of mind to be in for praying.  I was wondering if my worries and sometimes crying through prayers is part of the reason why my prayers are not answered.  Do you think when we pray we need to be in an uplifting/happy state of mind. If so, do you have any suggestions on how to do this without thoughts of worry coming through.

Not sure if that made sense.  I want my prayers with our Creator to be more meaningful. I am thankful for everything and that He is in our lives and guides us each day, but also very worried about our everyday things (jobs/finances).  I would hate to have negatively affected the outcome of things because of my worries and such (again not sure that make sense).  I'm not a big Bible reader, so don't know if there are any passages that would help me to achieve a better relationship with our Father.

;

Proverbs has helped me. I agree with what your - friend says about evil

and how it feeds off negativity.

I pray by having a "conversation" I guess you could say with God. I ask for wisdom, or at least wisdom to know who to ask for answers.

Praying - Believer

I think God is happy to hear our prayers in whatever state of mind we are. I think He understands what we are going through and is happy to help. I have had close calls with my driving and just yelled out, "Jesus, help me!!" and things like that. Afterwards, I think to myself, how rude, I didn't even say please. But, I think He understands and wants us to depend on him.

I guess he didn't understand what those 298 travelers were going through. - Surely they prayed

But why would he answer the prayers of 100 AIDS experts?

They didn't have time to pray. - SM

Aviation and military experts have said even the pilots had no idea what was heading their way. It was very quick. Regarding your statement about the AIDS experts, God loves all people.
But god "understands what we're going through" and is "happy to help." - Except the 298 on the plane

Give me one explanation how that statement can be true while all those people could die so horribly.

Hi! I think sometimes we tend to think of God as a jukebox, we put our order in, and then expect results. God just may be trying to draw you into a deeper relationship with him. If your focus is for his will to be done, even when you don't understand, rather than your own, everything else will come, including his favor, because your heart will be right with him (Matt 6:33). You can pray for peace also, and to know God's agape love. It changes everything when you're his friend (John 15:15). Maybe he has something better for you that you won't know to pray for. May God Bless you in your efforts in Jesus' name!

A god who only listens/replies when you're in a good mood is a crappy and judgmental god. nm - No thanks

The Bible says to pray without ceasing - Thessalonians 5:17

[ In Reply To ..]
and to "be still, and know that I am God." Psalms 46:10. Praying is talking to God, but also listening. I believe it is often in those times of our silent listening that God does his greatest work in us. "And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns." Philippians 1:6

"Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you." James 4:8

God, our Father, dearly loves us and wants to enjoy a close relationship with us, and this is made possible when we trust in our redemption through Jesus's crucifixion and resurrection.

"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

Also, do read your Bible. Remember "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." Romans 10:17

I find this passage especially comforting. "You parents--if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him." Matthew 7:9-11

God bless you!

My God has better hearing and is - not that petty.

You are afraid that negative thoughts might impede your prayers from reaching God? Or that he might just refuse to hear you?

Isn't that an odd thing to think about an omnipotent, all-loving being?

God is love. God IS love.

What infinitely loving being would tell his child "Nope! Sorry! Not hearing you today! You're being negative! Cheer up and try again later."

I think you seriously underestimate him. He is all-knowing, so he knows what your issues are before you tell him. He knows you are worried. He loves you anyway.

A "better relationship" is your perception, I think, of what YOU can do to make your relationship better. Like you have to bribe him or something, like maybe do something to make yourself worthy.

That isn't necessary. He loves you anyway. He loves you no matter what. Even if you don't talk to him, he loves you. Even if you only talk about negative things, he loves you. And he listens.

My suggestion is to unload on him as much as you would like, keeping in mind that he loves you anyway. At some point "he loves you ANYWAY" is going to kick in and you will get the point. He can't stop loving you no matter what you do.

When we pray, we praise God, we recognize what he has done for us, and we ask for help. If that is what we are supposed to do...

For the Bible, you definitely should start with the book of Job. You'll see why when you do. That and Psalms. The psalms are very ancient prayers. I think you will see right off that worries are not a concern ... the psalms are loaded with them.

I gave you a link below to a website that has daily prayers suitable for Christians. They have been prayed around the clock around the world for hundreds of years. Use what you like and omit the rest. You might like Evening Prayer the best. Psalms all over the place. Don't worry that they will bug you if you go there or download the app -- they won't.

The below link is to an article that has a map showing the temperature changes by state since 1970. This is not necessarily a political issue in itself, but our response to it is. I live in one of the states that is showing the most change. Due to my way of life, I have been very conscious of the weather changes in my lifetime. I first started noticing thunderstorms in January. We should only be having blizzards in January--it was kinda fun. Then we started having tornadoes in September an ...

I Am Praying For An Early Guilty Verdict For Casey AnthonyJul 05, 2011
Watching verdict watch today, I just hope the jurors come back today to show Casey Anthony what they think of her and her shady attorney, Jose Baez, who maligned everyone connected with the prosecution case and was willing to accuse her father of incest in the most crude way during opening statements.  Did Baez just take this third version of what happened to Caylee at face value from Casey, the psychopathic liar, and run with it, hoping to become rich and famous lawyer? What proo ...

Mind-boggling To MeDec 17, 2009
My 18-year-old son lives about an hour and a half away.  His girlfriend (who is 17 and in 11th grade) lives about 20-25 minutes from here but on the way to where he lives, so he is only about an hour away from her.  He works until 8 or 9 p.m. most nights but he still makes the drive to see her (and sometimes us) pretty often.  So he calls me this morning to tell me he went to her house last night to exchange Christmas gifts because he's not sure if he gets another day off be ...

Another Example Of Fox Mind-control EffortsDec 09, 2010
Media Matters has obtained leaked emails that show how a top Washington editor at Fox News directed his journalists not to use the phrase "public option." Instead, Bill Sammon, Fox News' Washington managing editor, told staffers to use the phrase "government option." This happens to be the exact phrase that Republican pollster Frank Luntz had advised Republicans to begin using to describe the public option -- on Sean Hannity's show, no less. Speaking to Hannity in August 2009, Luntz ...
