In addition to protesting the funeral of the 9-year-old girl murdered during Saturday\'s shooting rampage in Tucson, the lunatics from the Westboro Baptist Church tell New Times they plan to protest the funeral of Federal Judge John Roll and picket the very corner at which the massacre took place.
Shirley Phelps-Roper, a leader with the group, says she plans to hold a \"God on the Corner\" demonstration -- a play on the \"Congress on the Corner\" event held by Giffords on Saturday -- in protest to the \"rotten rebels\" who are destroying America.
\"I\'m over here laughing,\" a rambling and often-incoherent Phelps-Roper tells New Times. \"You think you can run God off the corner with your stupid laws?\"
Phelps-Roper even had the gall to make light of the injuries sustained by Giffords in the attack.

To both sides, but especially those using the term "hate speech" as of late, THIS is what REAL hate speech is all about. Please, anyone who feels that someone disagreeing with your political views or, heaven forbid, badmouthing SP or the Tea Party is "spewing hatred"... visit Rev. Phelps's website to see what hate speech is all about (if you can stomach it). Then you will see how silly it is that this is the catch phrase being thrown around. There's a difference between displaying bad manners through a poor choice or words and hate speech. Enough.
Thank you for posting.

but I went to a "sister site" and read what they had to say about the government, etc.. the one that says "Pickets". It were absolutely sickening. One so-called article under their home page named a bunch of politicians and other people like Oprah, Bill Gates, and others, stating they were all going to he11. Now that site won't come up either. Wonder if it has to do with the backlash they're getting.
I hope so... - no1joe

I've been to their website to see their picket schedule (they were threatening to picket a high school somewhat close to here). It's disgusting. The good news is is that these morons (again, not hate speech) are known for not showing up for scheduled protests or backing out last minute. However, they do look for media attention, so whether or not they plan on showing up to this... we must wait and see.
There's a really good documentary on these folks, "Fall From Grace." It's a few years old but still worth watching, and it's available on Netflix if you have it. Sad and interesting and an eye-opener to what truly hateful hearts and minds can make people do.
yes, I can... - see message

I have no difficulty believing this group is at it once again: they are ugly, misguided individuals who should be committed.
What is a little hard to believe is that you or anyone else would so casually recommend that they be shot.
Unless they commit a crime, we can not punish them for exercising their freedom of speech, hateful as their words and actions are. Just like we can't stop people who insist that Muslims are responsible for September 11.
The cities/states are afraid to try to contain them for fear of being sued for religious oppression. I do wish the courts would show a little more backbone - at least make a restraining order available for goodness sake!
You're right. I shouldn't have stated that. - Backwards Typist

Now you know how easy it is to state something, even if you don't mean it, when upset.
That's the exact point I was trying to make ("Unless they commit a crime, we can not punish them for exercising their freedom of speech, hateful as their words and actions are. ")
I'm hoping there is some AZ law that prohibits their picketing at funerals.
I do not call what they do 'religious oppression'. I have not heard them pray or spout bible passages at any protest but then again, I wasn't at any protests. I only heard their hate speech.
There are states that have made it illegal to protest at funerals... - Kendra

This "church" is listed as an American "hate group". They planned a demonstration here in my town a couple of years ago for the funeral of a local military man, who was killed overseas.
I had researched this cult before in college and gave a heads up to the organizers planning a hero ceremony.
With radio coverage we were able to bring out 10 times more people than we expected to support and thank the family of the man and our active troops on hand, (about 1000 ppl!) to the 15 or 20 people that Shirley Phelps had. We blocked their stupid signs ("God hates fags, the army people are going to hell for allowing fags in, it's your own fault, burn in hell"...)
We had press coverage on the scene, but did not allow her or any of her people to speak, every time they tried, the crowd would start yelling and whisteling so she could not be heard.
She threatened to press charges on me (said I threatened her with bodily harm) which I..... did not. But the police also wanted nothing to do with them and actually the officer suggested to them that they pack it up and leave town, which they did.
They are a cult, operating as a church to attempt to spread hatred and prejudice, like the KKK or Neo Nazis. Research them on the web! They are seriously listed as a hate group.
If any of you ever hear of this group coming to your town, rally together to stand against them! They are no more a church than I am a queen. They are awful and need to be shut down, run out of the US.
They did about 30 miles from my home. - Backwards Typist

The Snyder case in PA. That's when I did my research on them.
You said, "She threatened to press charges on me (said I threatened her with bodily harm) which I..... did not." Aw, why didn't you (just kidding)?
I don't think I could hold my temper if I spotted them around here and I don't get peeved easily. I'm no spring chicken, but I sure as heck would try to do something and probably wind up in jail. I wouldn't care.
They should all be given 1-way plane tickets to - Afghanistan. They'd fit right in.

I live unfortunately close to them. As a moderator for my newspaper's online forum, I've had to deal with Shirley Phelps Roper's posts and even ban her because of the awful things she said.
In Topeka one day, I was near them when a scuffle broke out. Some people were walking in a parking lot on Wanamaker Ave and the Westboro types started yelling at them. Next thing we knew, some guy in the Westboro clan acted like he had been hit with a glass bottle. By the time we came out of the store, the police were there and no glass bottle was to be found. I think the Westboro guy with the false claim was arrested, or at least it looked like he was.
Many Westboro members have been convicted of assault, battery, trespass, and disturbance of the peace. Some people claim they're just exercising their 1st Amendment rights, but they've gone far beyond that.
This is when true Christian churches should - form a barrier ....

between these people...shoulder to shoulder with the bikers in support of the grieving families so that people watching these kinds of things will get the true picture of what a Christian is. How said it would be if this kind of thing was the only picture of Christianity a person saw.
The police really can't intervene, but 40 or 50 people singing amazing grace at the top of their lungs drown out a lot of cat calls, and cans of spray paint sure do mess up signs. lol. I am like the poster below...it would be worth being carted off to jail to spray paint X's on their hate signs.
And as to shooting any of them...last thing the country needs is a Westboro martyr.
They need to be ignored... - sm

They are getting the attention they crave. If the media would stop printing/announcing the cult's name, they will become even more desperate for attention and their tactics more outlandish until, hopefully, the organization implodes and the leader is put away somewhere. Hey, a gal can dream, can't she?
Those whackos, and people like them, are exactly - the problem in this country. -sm

and I am totally disgusted by what this church does. These people are NOT doing God's work. Just another example of people taking the Bible out of context and making fools out themselves and giving all Christians a bad name. Makes me sick!
I wish something could be done but I know they have a right to say what they are saying no matter how ignorant their point of view is. Perhaps they could at least tell them they aren't allowed within so many feet...like a restraining order. They could still do their ignorant protests and yet they wouldn't be close enough to the moarners. Just a thought.
I hate to say shut them up and take away their right of free speech because if we start doing that...where will it stop? Ya know?
