One of these things is not like the other

The dedicated Trumpettes are rationalizing Trump's tax evasion by saying Clinton used the same loophole to avoid paying tax. In fact, I have used the same loophole when I was an independent contractor. Now here is why it is not the same. Trumps tax loss claimed is over 1 THOUSAND 3 HUNDRED TIMES (1300 times) Clinton's tax loss. In other words, Clinton claimed 0.07% of Trumps loss. Trump paid NO taxes and probably did not for 18 years. In contrast the Clinton's paid taxes of $4.6m. and donated $1.04 million to charity in 2015. Apples and oranges. ;

So many things wrong with your logic... - where to begin?

[ In Reply To ..]
First, as a percentage of their gross revenue, the Clinton loss was actually greater than Trump's. The fact that the absolute numbers are different is meaningless (and actually to be rationally expected), simply because Clinton and Trump were not operating on the same scale at all.

In short, Clinton didn't have a $billion to lose, but if she had, based on the tax law provisions that both applied, she would have done so.

I think I could probably stop here, but I won't.

Second, even CBS, NBC and (gasp) MSNBC have plainly stated that it is pure conjecture to make any assumptions about how the loss shown in this single tax return was handled in any of Trump's subsequent returns based on the carry-forward provisions of the tax law.

Third, tax avoidance is an entirely different matter from tax evasion, and it's extremely careless of you to conflate them.

Fourth, the Clintons paid $4.6 million in taxes in 2015 because they did nothing useful to produce that income that would have produced the kinds of deductions to reduce their obligation.

But don't let that stop you from realizing that the Clintons are so cheap that they tried to write off the "used" value of Bill's underwear, because they've done that and used many other provisions of the tax laws to PAY AS LITTLE AS THEY POSSIBLY COULD. Whether that happens to be more or less than someone else is absolutely irrelevant.

THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS WHETHER EACH OF THE PARTIES PAID WHAT THE LAW REQUIRED THEM TO PAY. Each of them has VERY different financial circumstances than the other, SO IT WOULD BE UTTERLY ILLOGICAL TO SUGGEST THAT THEIR TAX RETURNS SHOULDN'T AND WOULDN'T REFLECT THOSE DIFFERENCES.

Please don't ever talk about apples and oranges again until you yourself understand the differences (and the similarities, for that matter, because it happens that apples can be compared to oranges, the useless meme notwithstanding).

Thank you!! - sm

I was trying to find the words, but just gave up. Again, thank you for explaining this. Not that it will do any good for some of the Clinton fanatics, but thank you nonetheless.

I bet you got this off the Web...which has made - "Doh!" a household word.

[ In Reply To ..]
As soon as it became public that Clinton had done exactly what Trump did, they changed their narrative to try to hook people with the difference in the AMOUNTS involved.

I gotta hand it to libs. They have a good handle on the lack of critical thinking skills possessed by the typical Web crawler, and you can't say they don't take full advantage.

Its about Trump hiding and yes the amount is HUGE - Terrible businessman

Found on the net? I did my own calculations. Please verify if you wish. All those zeros can be so confusing.

The point is, your calculations have no relevance. - I think I made that quite clear.

[ In Reply To ..]

And you wish you could be such a "terrible businessman."

I know I sure do.

It amuses me when people show how little they know about the relationship between taking big risks and suffering big losses and nothing at all, apparently, about the thousands of entrepreneurs in our country who have attempted big things and who made and lost fortunes - most of whom no knowledgeable person would call "terrible businessmen."

You should read up on some of this aspect of our nation's history. It would be very enlightening for you.
It is obvious Trump does not understand the middle class - much less the poor
[ In Reply To ..]
He has lived his whole life this way, gilded toilets and throwing millions around. His tax policy that he is running on does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the loopholes he uses.

When he says he wants to make America great again--he is talking about billionaires like himself using us little guys. He wants more shiny new stuff and airports that we can pay for because things are getting just too dingy around here. But no, he does not want to pay, he wants us to pay.
I guess the Clintons "understand" the poor all right. At least - how to keep them on the plantation.
[ In Reply To ..]
Honestly.

We're talking about a woman who really isn't terribly bright but knows how to knock down about $5000 a word for a speech, and a man who cavorts with wealthy playboys on Teeny-Bopper Island.

These people - who were so sadly poor when they left the White House with the china and the drapes - suddenly live in the lap of luxury and yet neither one ever put in an honest day's work in their lives.

They're the definition of grifters, sucking the public tit dry.

What the Clintons know about the poor is that when one here and there does manage to get to his feet and break out of poverty, despite all that "help" from liberals, he's a lost vote for the Democrats.

If they had any intention of helping the poor, THEY'VE HAD DECADES AND OVER $10 TRILLION TO DO SO. (That's what's been spent in the "war on poverty" since Johnson.)

Help the poor? Tell me another one. You sure can't prove it by driving around America's inner cities. You sure can't prove it by looking at the poverty statistics. You sure can't prove it by the employment statistics. You sure can't prove it by the educational outcomes. And you sure can't prove it by the tragic social trends in these enclaves with regard to violent crime, livable neighborhoods, or families.

The record is abysmal. We're talking now about poverty that has become generational, entrenched and endemic. The cynical trap of deliberate, planned dependency. Nothing the liberals have ever done has ever been intended or designed to bring that dependency to an end forever.

It's all an act with liberals. Sort of like that creepy black-New-Orleans-gumbo-wuz-up-bro-evangelical-preacher accent that Hillary puts on whenever she visits a black church. It's an act with just one theme: If they ever discover that they don't need us, we're in really big trouble.

It seems you know almost nothing about the Clintons or you surely wouldn't lead with your chin.

The other HUGE difference - shush!

Trump refuses to release his tax returns! Hillary has released something like 30 years. If he did not have anything to hide, he would not be doing that.

Trump's taxes and his health report--both hocus pocus bogus.

...so easily, but it doesn't happen. Odd, that.

Excuse me. Leftists Warren Buffett and George Soros have had - losses equal or greater.

[ In Reply To ..]
What the libs are trying to take advantage of is the average American's ignorance about how business works. When you take big risks and dream big dreams, you can lose big. That's how the beast rolls.

When Clinton can match ONE job she's created for every 1000 jobs that Trump has created (30 to 40,000), I might listen to her crap. Until then, she's dead to me as a corrupt old-style politician who promises big things and never delivers. She promised NY state 220,000 jobs when she ran for President.

Results? NY state lost 128,000 jobs.

Plus Trump talk about his loses in the book The Art of - the Comeback.

People who are running for president should have some character. - Never Trump! Nm

[ In Reply To ..]

The left told us character doesn't matter back in the 1990s - during the Bill Clinton presidency.

[ In Reply To ..]
I remember that well during the Monica Lewinsky fiasco.

That the Clintons even show their faces in public at all tells you everything - about how much "character" matters.

[ In Reply To ..]
When the Democrats failed to vote to convict Clinton in his impeachment trial, I knew we had seen a cataclysmic shift in American society with respect to morality and ethics in office.

Contrast that period with the Nixon era, when it was the Republicans who forced him to resign for his misconduct in office.

Now, party is everything. Just tell me the name of "my" candidate. That's all I need to know, and character be damned.
Shame is now a 4-letter word. I see that Jimmy Swaggart is another - one back doing business as usual.

There seem to be no consequences for bad behavior anymore. In fact, it almost seems to be celebrated. That Bill, he's quite a stud! That Hillary, she knows how to get the green stuff.

We see it in spades with the long list of malefactors that litter the current administration from the White House staff on down through the ranks. Some have committed crimes, without any question (e.g., defrauding the government by personal use of government credit cards, not filing tax returns, malfeasance in office, and abuse of power), the worst that ever seems to happen to them is that they just get flipped into different jobs or even booted upstairs.

And setting ethics aside, you can be "merely" stunningly incompetent, and there are no consequences.

During Hillary Clinton's tenure at State, the agency LOST $9 billion. I don't mean they wasted it (another story). I mean they LOST it.

Without consequences, why should anyone - especially those in snug civil service jobs - adhere to any standards of behavior, much less any administrative rules and regulations?

Sometimes I don't recognize my country anymore. I really don't. Nothing that I grew up believing in seems to hold true much anymore, and the common decency that once lubricated the machinery of society has dried up. No wonder it's become so misaligned - a creaking, squeaking, groaning machine that might very well be on its last legs.

And you think Hillary has character??!! - Whoopsie...

for short time, I observed that he had built all homes on their ranches (family business, 2nd largest in USA, to give idea of the size of those write offs). These very nice homes were fille with his chilren and their significant others. 20 acre yard. 9000 square foot home. When I signed the return, I saw he had put down some figure that I recall was 19,000.00 and I am sure we paid that much in pet food. Also vacations during conventions or business meetings. He was worth about 20 million.

The tax laws are designed to destroy this nation. Do not blame trump, blame the tax laws. It's been a Free For All for 20 years in USA, and now it is time to pay the piper...just as planned. By debt or by sword. Bush Sr's No New Taxes and the republic GOPs' blood signatures to NEVER EVER raise taxes on 1% has been underway for 15 years. De-industrialization without a back up plan, immigration, aid to countries richer than a 20 trillion dollar burden. Look beyond the story and perhaps look a the big picture (State Capture).
