Does anyone collect things?

Posted: Jul 19, 2013

I started to collect angels and now it is out of hand.  Can't bare to part with them as some are gifts but I feel like a hoarder at this point - but just angels.

Anybody else collect anything?

Some of them are really beautiful, but the best part is that I use them to hold things like tea, coffee, pasta, etc, in my pantry. It's nice that they serve a purpose, too.

Shoes, shoes and more shoes - ADMT

To the tune of about 200 pairs. I not only collect them, it's like a total addiction. I should open up my own shoe rental site except only size 7 available, LOL!

OMG! Me too with the shoes - out of control

[ In Reply To ..]
Last count was 542 pairs, but I have added quite a few pairs already this season. I have 65 paris of Birkenstock sandals! I know! Who does that? Most of them are designer shoes and expensive, Prada, Jimmy Choo. It gets worse, if I find a pair that I really like, I may buy 2 or 3 more pair of that same shoe to have when the first pair wears out! You're right, it is an addiction. I have shoes I've never worn. I've got it bad!

You remind me of my girlfriend - see msg

Your shoe situation reminds me of my girlfriend. We like to window shop, and this girl CANNOT walk by a shoe store without practically having an, um, inappropriate response in the middle of the mall (if you get my drift). If she sees a particularly awesome pair, she makes noises, says "ooo, sweet, love it, oh my gosh, I can't take it anymore..."

I gently guide her away, at her request. These are like $200 shoes and she can't afford them.

LOL.

A shoe story - Old Pro

I have a member of my extended family who is a real fashionista. She is a criminal defense attorney in real life, but why she didn't do something in fashion is beyond me. Anyway, she is addicted to shoes--and not the inexpensive kind, either. She loves Jimmy Choo, etc. We all finally started calling her "Imelda" after Imelda Marcos, who had thousands of pairs of shoes. (Me, I'll just stick with my old orthopedic trompers, never mind Jimmy Choo.)

There must be a way to do it. I love my shoes, but I can't wear pointed toes or heels and walk any more. How about rhinestone-decorated aligator orthopedic shoes. I'd kill for that.

Expensive handbags and old Pyrex bowls. - sm

I have 15-20 expensive handbags, I just can't help myself. I also have over 150 Pyrex mixing bowls, pie plates, etc, most bought in antique or thrift stores.

I have just started collecting birds! - Old Pro

Not real ones, but the ones made by Audubon and are plush. They have a chip inside them and you squeeze and it makes the bird sound. In fact, today I am going to get the kingfisher and the raven. Any other birders here?

I love those Audubon plush singing birds! - birder here

Friends gave us a Baltimore Oriole, Cedar Waxwing, Chipping Sparrow, and a Common Nighthawk.

You may be familiar with The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, which is a wonderful resource for birders, and has a huge library of bird sounds. Here's the link, just in case:

Thank you, thank you! No, I was not aware of that link. It will be a lot of fun. I am just a beginning birder. They are such amazing creatures. I love the Audubon birds. I had been looking for a belted kingfisher in our local stores, but could never find it, but did find it on Amazon and ordered it, along with the quail. I suppose I should move to Florida because I really love kingfishers. Are there any magazines devoted to birding to which I could subscribe? Have a great day and thanks again.

Here's a link to the Bird Watcher's Digest website. There is a great range of articles, from backyard birding to conservation, species profiles, reader questions, etc. I hope you enjoy it!!

By the way, you can always come up north - we have kingfishers here, too!

I collect dolls. I guess you could call me a hoarder, too. - Backwards Typist

I started with a couple dolls from high school whenever we went on shopping field trips to NYC or D.C. Chinatowns. Bought a couple Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and even one from Thailand. Then I started with a couple Ashton Drakes back in the '80s and even an original Cabby Patch kid. I then wound up going through my second childhood, missing the dolls with the open mouths and teeth, and the eyes that closed made of glass and bride dolls. Bought quite a few of those.

Then I noticed Patricia Rose dolls. Fell in love with those....and then came Native American dolls. Whew! Problem is I get no pleasure in the collectible dolls because I never removed them from their boxes and never put them on display. I have over 100 dolls now and ready to "unhoard" but finding it hard. They're my babies. LOL

I love dolls too! - Bindi

I started with Japanese dolls 30+ years ago. I would go to Los Angeles' Little Tokyo every few weeks and pick up some of the inexpensive dolls. From there, I read everything I could get my hands on about dolls and was thrilled to find out there were actually doll shows I could go to!

My favorites are the old cloth mask-face dolls from the 40s, dolls from the 1950s , and Robert Tonner dolls (like Scarlett O'Hara and all of her wonderful outfits).

I haven't added anything to my collection in a few years, just enjoying what I have.

The smaller Anne Geddes dolls. I only have about 25 of those.

When I was younger, it was stuffed animals, mainly teddy bears.

Could I have OCD?

Backwards Typist - Old Pro

I hardly think you have OCD--just a love for the dolls. If you have OCD, I probably do, too--yesterday I was able to find a quail AND a kingfisher, so I bought them both! I have all kinds of birds. Each winter I put all of the birds around my living room to remind me that it will be spring. No, I don't think you/I have OCD. We're just collectors! :)

Whew! Had me worried there for an instant. Thanks. LOL (no msg) - Backwards Typist

One Of These Things Is Not Like The OtherOct 04, 2016
The dedicated Trumpettes are rationalizing Trump's tax evasion by saying Clinton used the same loophole to avoid paying tax. In fact, I have used the same loophole when I was an independent contractor. Now here is why it is not the same. Trumps tax loss claimed is over 1 THOUSAND 3 HUNDRED TIMES (1300 times) Clinton's tax loss. In other words, Clinton claimed 0.07% of Trumps loss. Trump paid NO taxes and probably did not for 18 years. In contrast the Clinton's pai ...

How Are Things ImprovingApr 19, 2012
A poster below said, "Typical talkback. Do You Think Things Are Worse...Aug 04, 2012

Seeing Things On TV That I Am Thinking What?Jan 08, 2013
I saw 3 different things this morning that I am puzzled. First, people having baby ultrasounds in their homes inviting all the family for an ultrasound party to let them be the first (along with the couple) to view the baby. People doing the ultrasounds do tell the gender of the baby and that again is not 100% sure each time, even for people who routinely do ultrasound in medical settings. The people doing not medical, say no diagnosis of any kind made but as we all know not every pregnancy is a ...

In Chappaqua NY, the snow lay deep around the Clinton mansion, but that didn't stop Bill from taking a stroll around the grounds. Suddenly, he stopped dead in his tracks.  The Secret Service agent who was with him asked, "What is it, Mr. President?" Clinton's face was growing beet-red as he pointed a shaking finger at the ground.  There, written in the snow in an unmistakable shade of yellow, were the words "Bill Clinton is a dirty pedophile." Clinton demanded that the per ...

As it happens, in recent weeks I was the target of a trolling campaign and saw exactly how it works. It started when an obscure website published a post titled “CNN host Fareed Zakaria calls for jihad rape of white women.” The story claimed that in my “private blog” I had urged the use of American women as “sex slaves” to depopulate the white race. The post further claimed that on my Twitter account, I had written the following line: “Every death of a white person brings tears of j ...

Things That Bring Americans TogetherMay 08, 2011

1.  The deficit has grown mostly because of the recession.
