Do you think things are worse...

....since the Supreme Court gave corporations the same voice as individuals in supporting political candidates? I sense that that's made things worse during this campaign.

I think these PACs and Super PACs are creating so much havoc, on both sides, and they're making politics even more confusing and muddled. It's awful when a PAC comes out with advertising that favors one candidate or the other, and people assume that the campaign itself put out the ad, but they actually may have had nothing to do with it.

It's just so wrong, to me, that corporations are stomping all over individual voters' voices with all the money they can throw behind their free speech. It seems to me that this is making a big mess of things, overall. I think if the individual CEOs or executives of a corporation want to have a say, they should be able to have it just like every other individual citizen....with the same contribution limits, per person.

It's also just so wrong that "money" equals "a voice" in the way our country is run. Was THAT what the founding father's envisioned, do you suppose? Did the first settlers from Europe come to this land so they could set up a country where the wealthiest controlled things and had the most say? "Liberty and justice for all" doesn't seem to ring true any more.

lived in a time when people actually looked at the issues and made informed decisions. While I don't love the PAC's it still comes down to the responsibility of the voter to know the issues. Unfortunately, in this day in age, most people actually don't have a clue other than what they see in those neverending commercials. And, to get to the truth of just about anything in politics now, you have to do some serious research, which most people don't do. This has been true since Kennedy (in my opinion). If you scream loud enough and often enough, the public gets tone deaf, and that's where we are now.

The one thing to remember though is that the individual's vote is still not for sale.

were the final straw that triggered the revolt against British favor toward private corporations after Parliament gave a huge (ad valorem) tax break to the East India Trading Company. This was a bailout of the late-18th century sort, perceived as an effort to crush competing colonial “small business” shippers and tea shop vendors. The favored EITC status led to monopolistic corporate excess (now there's a surprise) that was vigorously opposed by American colonials, who believed fair economic parity (sound familiar?) was an essential component of maintaining economic liberty. They feared the same demise would befall America that had been witnessed in South Asian colonies, whose residents had been enslaved and reduced to ruinous poverty. Aside from these fears, the idea of taxation without representation, counter to the evolving Massachusetts tax levy system, provided further impetus that ultimately led them to dump a couple of million dollars’ worth of tea into the harbor, thus establishing premeditated civil disobedience as an enduring cornerstone of American democracy.

Fast forward a couple of centuries and we find the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I think they call that an oligarchy, but it is no longer a republic because of the SCOTUS. The only thing left for the SCOTUS to do is select the highest bidder.
