Why this disgusted voter will choose Trump.

Posted: Mar 31, 2016

Every one of the leading candidates is seriously flawed, but not in the same ways, or to the same degree.   There being no good, much less "ideal", candidate, here's my thinking and I won't be insulted if you disagree or reach a different conclusion.

1.  I don't automatically eliminate someone who has been part of the "Washington establishment" as long as they haven't FAILED in that role.  This would eliminate Clinton, Sanders and Cruz.  Every one of them has, in one way or another, been a crashing failure during their period of government service, or proven themselves unworthy by reason of their (a) character or (b) effectiveness while in office.

2.  National security is the bedrock upon which everything else (such as the economy) depends.  In turn, illegal immigration and the indiscriminate acceptance of refugees from certain parts of the world impinges immediately upon national security.  I cannot accept anyone who is weak or perhaps even "permissive" in this regard.  Clinton and Sanders are immediately eliminated.  Cruz has talked big but voted otherwise, so he is also eliminated.

3.  I will not vote for anyone based on whether they happen to possess a penis or a vagina.  If I did so, I could offer no rebuttal if you suggested that my intelligence was on the order of a Homer Simpson or Bullwinkle the Moose.  Gender has no role whatsoever in this decision.  Clinton gets the back of my hand for believing that women are such idiots that they will vote for her because she's a woman.  I don't care what plumbing she carries around - or does she plan to sign executive orders with pee-pee leaks?

4.  The trade and other international agreements that the US has entered into over the past two decades have been a disaster.  These must, and can, be rolled back to terms that put our nation on a more even footing and that promote our national interests.  There is only ONE candidate who even seems to believe that these agreements can and should be reevaluated, and either canceled or renegotiated, or who I believe might have the ability to do so, and that is Trump.

5.  The military must be restored to a position of supremacy.  There's a lot of cloth-headed thinking about the cold, hard realities of the world in this regard.  Spend five minutes in a history book if you doubt me.  Clinton and Sanders are out in this respect, Cruz gets a pass.  Trump wins the kewpie doll.

6.  Diplomacy matters.  Trump loses here, as does Clinton - whose period of service as Secretary of State proves unequivocally that she is utterly ineffectual in this regard.  She made good speeches...and traveled a lot.  This is NOT diplomacy.  Cruz and Sanders get a pass as I have no way to judge their diplomatic abilities.

Added up, it's Trump 4 to 5 out of 6 and the rest can only cough up 2 or 3 points each.  It's a bad year, with bad choices, but some of them are distinctly worse than others.

Oh - and by the way, I should say this:

First, I know that Trump says outrageous things, and that's one reason he loses out in the "diplomacy" category, but I also don't give his gaffes that much weight either.  He's still learning how to play the political game, so I don't quite expect the glib slick snot that we get from the other three "professional politicians."  They all had to learn the Poli-Speak language.

Second, I know that Trump is unabashedly pro-American and that this supposedly "frightens" certain parties around the world - and I'm actually just fine with that.  We've had 8 years of a President who at every opportunity has kicked America to the curb and apologized for the nation that has freed more people around the world than any other and has sacrificed enormous sums of blood and treasure to do so.

It's time and past time that we had a President who is unafraid to declare unequivocally that the United States is the greatest nation in the history of the world, who means it - and who doesn't want to "change the country" into something else.  We've slid far enough toward becoming a third-world nation, and it's time to claw our way back, or lose it forever.

I will vote for Trump because he does not take - big bucks from special interests

[ In Reply To ..]
To me the fall of American middle class is directly related to politicians who take mega bucks (bribes) for their votes which are in favor of large contributors/rich/corporations/big business.

Whoever thought NAFTA was a good idea and voted for it was criminally insane. Regarding free trade with America in a trade deficit, some politicians should be in prison.

Agree - R2

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree with the above 2 posters. It is the lesser of 2 evils, so to speak. He can't talk coherent, but he hasn't been "groomed" to do it, just like Palin wasn't. I have no respect for any of the candidates, but it is my right to vote, and so be it, I will. I also detest NAFTA, and that was the reason my hubs lost his job after 20+ years, and us too. That would be the first thing I got rid of as POTUS. The second would be lobbyists, and the third would be that NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE, can hold office for longer than 8 years, then have to get off the seat or get voted back in. Earn your pay. Okay, your turn.

Wait and see - old and burned out

[ In Reply To ..]
Should Trump win the nomination he will take the big bucks just like everyone else. It simply costs too much to run a campaign for him to finance it by himself. He won't take the chance on losing that much money because he will lose.

So you see into the future AND read minds? - He is going to take money from special interests

[ In Reply To ..]
And owe big business votes on their behalf? He is a multi-billionaire. He has spent very little money so far, just running his campaign on the media. Why would he change his style? And the politicians who spent millions of dollars on anti-Trump ads have dropped out of the race or are in second place. This is 2016 and you can make your points on social media - just like Trump did when he ran that cute little ad of Hillary barking like a dog at terrorists and Putin. He put it on social media and mainstream media picked it up - FOR FREE.

Dream on old and burned out. Take a nap and maybe reality will set in.
Wish I could take a nap - old and burned out

I think you probably have more ideas than - your guy does

[ In Reply To ..]
Local station this morning (very, very pro-GOP) was pleading for anyone still supporting Trump to please call in, stating they might could understand in the first because of certain things he promised but now?

Trump supporters, like he said, would probably let him get away with shooting someone and still be with him. I just do not back a person who seems to have no ideas on anything.

How funny. One minute he's trashed for his ideas - the next minute he has none.

[ In Reply To ..]
Just as there are some who would support Trump if he shot someone, there are those who wouldn't support him if he rushed into a burning nursing home and rescued sixteen octogenarians.

It's not hard to spot them, on either side - and it's apparent to me that you haven't spent a moment on Trump's website or you couldn't make the ludicrous claims that you do.

Trump has no positions on these matters, he. Changes with the weather. What are his positions on saving social security and providing affordable health care and an education to the taxpayers? If you don't care, you should. I see Trump as an unstable person who has no idea what he is doing. He obviously thinks women are ornamental and not functioning humans and some of his other comments indicate he is racist. The CEO of Ford has spoken out against his trade policies, not having experience in government is not a good thing. Trump is going to dig himself into a hole, Cruz will be the nominee and Hillary and Bernie will fight it out at the Democratic convention.

Well, if you follow Trump (which you obviously do not) - you'll discover something interesting.

[ In Reply To ..]
1. Social Security is not an "entitlement" (meaning something given for nothing). People have paid into the system in good faith and we need to honor the commitments made to them.

2. SS can be made more efficient, and the fraud and abuse must be eliminated.

3. SS must be guaranteed solvent, but it might be necessary to reevaluate the actuarial basis on which it was originally based - which is no longer true (e.g., life expectancy has risen dramatically since the 1940s and thrown all of the original SS calculations out the window, but the actuarial structure has NEVER BEEN REEVALUATED).

Try being objective. It's a wonderful aid to thinking - and to avoiding the embarrassment of yourself that you just committed.

There is not 1 station, radio or news, that talks up for Trump. Most see his horrible shortcomings but some are just blinded.
I hear only two w/ their own shows - sm

who analyze his positions/history and reject his "believe me" campaign. One host fairly swoons over Drumpf (yes, that's his family name). He's even said he'd accept a position in Trump's cabinet. At first it was funny; now it's just silly.

Stations? I cut the TV cord about five years ago. I'd had it w/ paying $75 for stations I never looked at just to have the six or so I did. Radio here carries mostly local news.

Trump now across the board has 73% disapproval - ratings from female voters

[ In Reply To ..]
apparently the largest disapproval rating ever of any potential nominee. I think he has already dug his hole, not only GOP but democratic sides both slamming him yesterday on his abortion view(s).

Doesn't say much for our gender, IMO. I don't - let polls tell me what to think.

[ In Reply To ..]
As they say, "Whatever blows your skirt up."

So if Trump has 73% disapproval poll - does that mean I should not vote for him?

[ In Reply To ..]
Who takes the polls and who reports them? I suspect polls can be manipulated don't you? Depends on who conducts the poll and who sponsors the poll and what the questions are.

I put very little credibility into polls as far as predicting the outcome of a political election.
Maybe you don't put credibility in pools but Trump sure does! - Truthhurts
[ In Reply To ..]
He "brags" about his pool numbers are almost every day. Some days, it's definitely wishful thinking on his part. :)

No matter what, he still a bigot, sociopath egomaniac who sues anyone who says something about him that he doesn't like, cheater who has been involved in federal RICO lawsuits with George Soros as his partner, and much much more which makes him unsuitable for the presidency. Plus even though his present wife is okay, do we really want a super model who posed nude to be our first lady? I certainly don't. It doesn't show much respect for the Oval Office.

BTW, he is not exactly self-funding his campaign. He is using the donations from others first and giving himself 'loans' that he will be able to deduct in his taxes in 2017. Yet people talk about hating the 1%. Whatta laugh.
Oops! That's supposed to be POLLS, not POOLS even though I'd like to have one. :) - Truthhurts

I have seen many and not one of them is saying anything - except his approval rating
[ In Reply To ..]
is the lowest of any candidate ever. You can vote for the person you want, of course. I do not live my life by polls but they are sure telling sometimes.

I agree with you on all points but one - and here is why

[ In Reply To ..]
I actually think he will do well in the diplomacy department. His goal was to get himself talked about as much as possible without spending a lot of money to do it. He has certainly accomplished that!

If you have seen him in one-on-one interviews or town hall meetings, he comes across much better than in debate situations, where it has become a bash Trump free-for-all.

You don't make good business deals with people all over the world without the art of diplomacy. I have seen and read interviews with people who have actually worked with him, and almost all of them say he is great to work for and with.

No one has heard some of the stories about things he has done that had nothing to do with him making money. Like the time he was broke down out in the middle of nowhere, and a nice couple stopped and helped him out.... he then paid off their mortgage to thank them. Or the ice rink in New York that the government couldn't manage to finish repairing after several years. Donald Trump took over the project and had it done in a few months. Or the story I saw just last night. A beauty pageant contestant that he met at one of his pageants years ago. When he found out years later that she had developed an incurable illness, he sent her a handwritten note calling her the strongest woman he knows. She was at his rally the other night and stood up because she wanted to thank him for that letter, and how much it meant to her.

So, yes... he's still learning about being a politician. But it's actually quite refreshing to hear someone speak straight from the heart and not from some canned speeches and approved phrases that never actually tell you anything. But I think he is a person who once he says he is going to do something, he finds a way to get it done. You don't make gazillions of dollars without that mindset. And because he is a businessman, he thinks about how to get the best bang for his buck without wasting money. Isn't that the kind of person we want to cut all the wasteful spending of our tax money?

I agree - He is not a career politician

[ In Reply To ..]
and doesn't have the slick, pat answers down. I still support him.

Too bad Kasich didn't get much of a chance - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
He seems to hold the values you hold dear and he has experience to boot.

Trump's big mouth just drowned out all the other candidates in the beginning, msde the media go hog wild over him because he is so outrageous, and that was the downfall of most of them.

Even today, Kasich hasn't run a negative campaign while others have been stupid enough to fall for the insults of the Trump campaign on them.

Sure, they shouldn't have been subjected to insults, but that's Trump and what I call dirty campaigning...while the others should have kept their head and not fallen for his traps.

Kasich is a career politician as corrupt - as every other politician

[ In Reply To ..]
He takes money from special interests to fund his campaign. He owes special interests votes on their behalf. Kasich is no different than any other lying politician.

Your Trump hatred blinds you from the truth. The political system is corrupt. The middle class is hurting because of government corruption. The government consists of politicians like Kasich, Cruz, Rubio, Clinton, etc.

Did you know his father was a mailman? - and if

[ In Reply To ..]
Cruz was "government corruption" as you write, all the GOPers would be behind him.

He openly called out McConnell for the liar he is. (Remember Joe Wilson? "You lie!")

Reasons To ChooseOct 08, 2016
Looking over the posts on the political board, I am stunned by the vitriolic posts. For the top office in the land, we are hiring someone for 4 years. We are the interviewer and the employer.
