One of the first orders of business will be for Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson to decide whether to block the law from taking effect in this year's election. Yipppppeeeee!!!!!
Those who follow this issue will recall when PA’s state House Republican floor leader Mike Turzai boasted to constituents in a closed party meeting in June that it would allow GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney to win Pennsylvania in the fall, thus disclosing the underlying motives for introducing the measure. Furthermore, there's no track record of fraud in the state that it would prevent, so the existence of voter fraud cannot be argued in the court hearing.
The law has the potential to disenfranchise 1 million voters who lack the required documentation to obtain the photo ID, such as 93-year-old Vivian Applewhite, one of the plaintiffs who does not drive and cannot obtain her birth certificate, required to apply for the state photo ID. Registration of birth was not compulsory in many states in the early 1900s, especially for those born at home. More than 8 million voters are unaware of the proposed changes.
No matter the outcome, it would serve the interests of the state, those who the GOP seeks to prevent from voting, and the larger question of the law’s constitutionality, for the judge to place and injunction on the measure until after the election. It would be just the right karma Turzai deserves for his zealous, overly confident declaration behind closed doors.
