Voter suppression and intimidation...impressive

Posted: Aug 20, 2012

Two Democratic officials in Ohio, a key battleground state and huge electoral prize in the Nov. 6 presidential election, may be fired for trying to extend early voting hours to weekends in defiance of a state ban, officials said on Monday.

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, a Republican, issued a directive last week making the hours for early in-person voting by absentee ballot consistent throughout the state, where voting rules are a hot-button issue.

Voters will be able to cast absentee ballots from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays for the first three weeks of early voting beginning Oct. 2 and until 7 p.m. on weekdays for the final two weeks before the election.

But two Democrats on the Montgomery County elections board, an area which includes Democratic-leaning Dayton, declined to implement the directive and voted to allow weekend voting after it was issued, Husted said in a statement on Monday.

Husted suspended the officials on Friday and sought their dismissal at a hearing on Monday. Jon Allison, an attorney and former chief of staff to former Republican Governor Bob Taft, is expected to recommend whether to fire the officials this week.

"While they are free to disagree with my decision, they are not free to disobey the law," Husted said in the statement.

Democrats said that Husted's directive did not specifically prohibit additional weekend hours, according to Jerid Kurtz, spokesman for the Ohio Democratic Party.

"It's abundantly clear that Republicans are prepared to do whatever they need to do in order to game this election in their favor, including suppressing voters across Ohio," Ohio Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern said.

Ohio election boards always have two Democratic and two Republican members, and the secretary of state serves as the tie-breaking vote.

Democrats said Husted has been trying to restrict voting in Democratic-leaning counties. Prior to his directive last week, some Democratic-leaning counties were not permitted extra hours while some Republican-leaning counties were. Extended voting is thought to favor Democrats in Ohio.

Husted said he was committed to making voting "uniform, easy, fair and secure."

Also in Ohio, lawyers for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign have asked a federal judge to restore early voting rights for the final days before the election to all registered voters in the state. A ruling is pending.

4 pages of personal opinion sites. This is a bad sign, right or left, or outer space, so I did a quick hop to

factcheck.org (Annenburg Public Policy Center), politifact.com, and snopes.com, and it's apparently too recent for them to report on. Doesn't mean it isn't happening, just no info yet one way or the other.

I'd like to offer the following as a few sources I browse now and then that represent mainstream middle-road or only slightly right thinking. Keeping an eye on the many middle-road publications like these is a way of keeping grounded and reasonably safe from the claims of both left- and right-wingers trying to make fools of us. They have reputations for honesty and accuracy to protect, which helps control what's reported and how it's reported. If it's not reported in these and others like them, does it really exist? If not, time to suspend belief while digging for the truth.

I chose these particular ones because a conservative friend considers them reliable even if they don't present the consistently conservative point of view she prefers.

www.theatlantic.com (This is the old The Atlantic magazine)

www.pewstates.org (Info from the Pew Center)

www.economist.com (The Economist magazine)

There are many others, of course. Happy digging. :)

the Romney ads that say Obama takes work out of welfare. The first ad was debunked and proven to be blatantly false by just about everyone out there, but hey, what does Romney do? He runs 2 more ads that say the same thing. That's how propaganda works. Say it loud and say it often, and there will be fools out there who will take it as truth.

Obama and Sebelius sneaked it through as a sort of a memo. They are both lying SOS. If you google, it is even on Huffington Post. Isn't that like a Liberal Bible of sorts? They virtually gutted Bill Clinton's welfare reform. BC actually got it passed through Congress. The only way these people can get anything passed is to sneak. They are a shameful lot.
Excuse me. There are dead people - still listed on the rolls

This is a clerical problem, not a voter fraud problem. If county voter registration staff is so inefficient and lax about their record keeping, how is anyone supposed to believe they would suddenly become precise and exacting when purging the names? The time to correct administrative errors is between elections, not on election day. The place to do it is in the back offices of the VR workplace, not at the polls when Juan Martinez from XYZ district shows up to vote and is turned away because deceased Juan Martinez from XYZ district has been purged.

The process of purging needs to be done in accordance with strict guidelines designed to protect the living voter from arbitrary exclusion, not the dead one wingers obsessively fear will suddenly rise up and join imaginary legions of the zombie electorate. When errors are made, there need to be mechanisms in place to ENSURE voters' rights, who get caught up in the bureaucratic-legislative crossfire, are PRIORITIZED.

Instead of trying to justify disenfranchising eligible voters, the focus should be on building cross-databases between county VR rolls and state Bureau(s) of Vital Statistics that issue death certificates, allowing for technology to update the rolls on a daily or weekly basis. Until that's done, intelligent adults need to realize that the documented 0.7 ineligible voters per state per year who inadvertently try to vote are NOT going to significantly affect the outcome of any elections.

This excuse is dead in the water.
Then why is Holder trying to stop the purging? - Tell me, please.

the highly suspect timing of of the efforts. Why is it that voter fraud hysteria never seems to surface when the GOP has their man in the WH and controls Congress? What do you suppose accounts for this latest cycle of phoney outrage since 2008 and the intensified second-round volleys since 2010?
I should add, the 0.7 voter per state per year thing - could be a factor, huh? nm

I can't find anything on a reliable site about the Justice Department trying to keep dead people on the polls yet, though.

So far Florida's effort seems to be about making sure non-citizens who were issued drivers licenses aren't using them to register and vote. And the JD's effort is to keep Florida from disenfranchising those non-citizens who later became citizens and registered voters. Totally appropriate governance on the face of it, but apparently Florida has been more than a little sloppy about implementing it, kicking legitimate voters off the rolls too soon before an election for them to fix it, so the JD put a halt to it.
Where are your links to stats on how many dead people - show up at the polls every year?
