My consolation--if the poor and middle class survive

Hopefully our democracy will still have enough substance left to defeat the T-pot republicans at the next election.

I was just thinking that if the middle class survives this administration, hopefully our democracy will still have enough substance left to defeat Obama and the democrats next election.

I guess you are under the presumption that we can spend our way out of debt. Any fool who believes that goes bankrupt.

I do believe Obama and his fellow democrats - sm

are the ones choking the middle class. We will be lucky to last these next two years and if we do, I hope to he!! Obama gets voted out.

A friend is worrying about the government shutdown - On SS--lives one check to another.

He is needs cardiac testing and care this month and has to travel quite aways for it. No family to help. He is one of many in similar circumstances. Hope he survives. Yup. More tax breaks for the corporations and the rich!

rest easy - sm

I did a little research and found:

The only people who will really notice the government shutdown are government workers themselves.

There will be no disruption in Social Security, welfare, civil service retirement, etc., or any other kind of open-ended mandatory program payments. The mail will not stop, air traffic controllers will keep the jets flying, the Border Patrol will try to keep the border secure, military will stay fighting the enemy, etc.
People who send out SS checks and deliver mail - plow the roads, etc.

Will keep showing up when not paid?
Existing SS benefits checks are distributed electronically - sm

and would continue uninterrupted. Only NEW SS applications would be delayed. The US Postal Service has not received taxpayer subsidies since 1982 and is completely self-sufficient, relying only on the sale of postage for its revenue. Thus, mail delivery would not be affected. The guys who plow the roads are not federally or state funded. They are employees of counties and/or municipalities.
You are wrong. - sm

From SS: If you receive your checks by mail:

If your check is not delivered on its due date, wait three workdays before reporting the missing check to us. The most common reason checks are late is because a change of address was not reported.

If your check is ever lost or stolen, contact us immediately. Your check can be replaced, but it takes time.

To be safe, you should cash or deposit your check as soon as possible after you receive it. You should not sign your check until you are at the place where you will cash it. If you sign the check ahead of time and lose it, the person who finds it could cash it.

A government check must be cashed within 12 months after the date of the check or it will be void. After a year, Hyou are still entitled to the payment, we will replace the voided check.

Have you ever heard of the DOT? Dept of Trans? Heard of an interstate or a US Highway?

I do not know if the Post office is exempt, but I would not bank on your opinion.
Looks like they keep a plan in place to have - some people still working

during a government shutdown. And, she is pretty much right about the rest.
Lets define distributed, shall we? - Opinion-free post. Check out the facts. sm

I did not say SS checks were deposited direct. They are printed, assembled and posted via computer, i.e. electronically. You are taking about procedures to follow in the case of SS checks lost or stolen and deposit instructions. I am talking about how they are released, and I am not expressing opinion either. Unlike you, I research before posting.

Perhaps a black and white AP report will satisfy you. See the first link below. Scroll down to the 7th paragraph and please note where it says, "For all the political drama and rhetoric, the actual stakes of a shutdown are not so dire for ordinary Americans. The military would stay active, INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS would remain open and GOVERNMENT CHECKS WOULD BE ISSUED, although new applicants for benefits under programs such as Social Security might have their sign-ups delayed."

Of course I have heard of DOT and interstate highways. My husband transports autos across them in trucks registered to DOT and I dispatch his calls in my spare time. I also make sure he remains in compliance with all state and federal regulations, prepare his business taxes, etc. He delivers autos to the port for export, so I am also quite familiar with port authority regulations, which are a function of the county. Now, my question to you is what the heck does that have to with snow plows?

The second link below is to the Wisconsin Administrative Register. On page 25, column 2, you will note that snow plow workers from communities of less than 3000 employed by LOCAL units of government are exempt from CDL requirements and can operate with regular licensing. In fact, unless snow plows cross state lines, they are not subject to FEDERAL DOT guidelines, and after all, this thread IS talking about a federal shut down, is it not?

WI snow plow operators from larger communities are required to have CDLs and are subject to STATE DOT guidelines. WI DOT coordinates with county highways departments to manage snow conditions. See third link to Wisconsin DOT Snow Plowing and Ice Control Guide brochure. You should find this fourth link reassuring: Despite Protests, Snow Plow Operators At Work. Should there be a shortage of snow plow operators, back up has been provided for. See fifth link: Wisconsin CR 96-110. I trust we have sufficiently covered all the bases on those snow plow concerns.

Now, about those doubts you have expressed regarding the US Postal Service. Why not check out their website? Thats what I did before posting last time around. See sixth link: ELIMINATION of Taxpayer Subsidies has Saved Billions. Or link 7, entitled The Postal Service is Self-Sufficient. Looks like you can take that to the bank after all.

corruption in "corporate America." Many politicians were and are in bed with big banks...that includes your precious democrats as well as the republicans.

I have a problem with corporations giving out huge bonuses all while screwing the rest of us. I also have a problem with unions giving millions of dollars to democrats while helping to bankrupt the states.

I'm giving no one a free pass...nor should you.

Yesterday, Feb. 1, at 4:00 pm, Reuters published an article on the back door taxes on the middle class imposed by Obama. White House minions protested, so at 8:07 pm last night, pusillanimous Reuters withdrew the article, saying:  ”The story Backdoor taxes to hit middle class has been withdrawn. A replacement story will run later in the week.” See here. This is exactly the sort of anti-democratic anti-liberty measures that took place in totalitarian systems, Nazi ...
