U.S. suing over Texas voter law intended

Posted: Aug 22, 2013

I was just feeling glad I didn't have to be ashamed of living in Texas when the reality that I do have residences in Georgia and Florida intruded. Sigh.

In any case, we're stopping the Texas GOP BEFORE the next election, in addition to working on all the others, so that's good.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Thursday escalated its efforts to restore a stronger federal role in protecting minority voters in Texas after the Supreme Court’s June ruling striking down part of the Voting Rights Act, announcing that the Justice Department would become a plaintiff in two lawsuits against the state.

The Justice Department said it would file paperwork to become a co-plaintiff in an existing lawsuit brought by civil rights groups and Texas lawmakers against a Texas redistricting plan. Separately, the department said, it is filing a new lawsuit over a state law requiring voters to show photo identification.

In both cases, the administration is asking federal judges to rule that Texas has discriminated against voters who are members of a minority group, and to re-impose on Texas a requirement that it seek “preclearance” from the federal government before making any changes to election rules.

“Today’s action marks another step forward in the Justice Department’s continuing effort to protect the voting rights of all eligible Americans,” Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said in a s atement, adding, “This represents the department’s latest action to protect voting rights, but it will not be our last.”

That's for sure. Republican-controlled states across the country are using dirty illegal methods to disenfranchise American citizens. I am so tired and disgusted that the Federal government has to step in again, and again and again to protect the right to vote.

And these states want MORE state power? Of course they do...

Absolutely NO ONE disagrees with that one. We ALL - know the real reason: Election stealing.

[ In Reply To ..]
Virtually all of it's on the right, and that's because increasingly it's the only way they can see to win any elections.

Heaven forbid they should actually plan to represent a majority of their electorates.

the GOP thinks it can get away with it any longer, and not be badly hurt again, is delusional. But they're hoping. And since they won't welcome nonwhite conservatives into the party--desperate.

We'll just have to see how it works on this off-year election. Will these bad-faced continued attempts to disenfranchise citizens bring them out to fight for their right to vote the way it did last time? We're organizing early, BTW. I'll be driving people to the polls again.

Whatever happens, people who know they have to steal elections to gain office are doing something very, very wrong and very, very stupid. At least, after a quarter century of hypocrisy, they no longer claim to be "the" moral party or or "the" patriotic party. Their grand vision is an unadorned passion for opposing the democratic way now. Progress.

Guess you didn't hear about Allan West and Juan Williams (sm) - Low information?

teaming up to try to keep certain teens from ruining their lives. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe Allan West is a conservative. You're just talking trash.
The reality is - getting real...how 'bout you?

The reality is that agencies that are in charge of the voting process (Supervisors of Elections, Canvasing Boards, etc.) are charged by law to register voters. This includes verifying proof of residence and keeping up by various methods with relocation of voters. They are also charged with verifying signatures on every ballot cast.

We insult these workers by deeming they are not doing their jobs or that their work is substandard every time Republicans come up with these redundant and time-wasting measures, as another poster said, in desperation.

They should be respecting voters, not insulting them or the people charged with upholding voting laws.

NLRB Suing AZ And SD Over Secret BallotsApr 26, 2011
On the heels of President Obama’s union-controlled National Labor Relations Board complaint telling the Boeing Company where it should locate its second 787 assembly plant, the NLRB has now decided to sue two out of the four states where voters audaciously passed constitutional amendments last fall requiring secret-ballot elections on unionization.  Previously, the NLRB had threatened to sue all four states. I live in a rural state and I have always had to show my ID (even though those working at the polling place know me personally) to vote.  Everyone that I know has some sort of ID, either a driver's license, a birth certificate, a social security card, etc.  My state does not require a photo ID, although I am aware that some states do require that.  I was surprised to find that some of the most populated states do not require any kind of personal identification to vote.  ...
