Trying to look at both sides (WI protests)

Posted: Feb 19, 2011

Okay...so here is my thing.  I don't like unions.  I think that unions have used and abused union workers all the while saying they are there to protect them.  Union bosses have made outlandish salaries and are as crooked as the greedy CEOs who also make outlandish salaries.

I understand that union workers in WI are ticked.  No one wants to lose money...just ask anyone in the private sector who has taken a pay cut or lost their jobs entirely.  It sucks and it isn't fair.  However, the state has to do something or some people aren't going to get paid at all.

In saying that, I don't understand why Walker won't negotiate on this and not take away collective bargaining.  That measure I find rather harsh.  I think (and maybe I'm wrong) many would begrudgingly accept this deal if they got to keep collective bargaining.

As for firefighters out there protesting, they are exempt from this as well as the police so I don't know why they are protesting.

Teachers...should be at school teaching the kids.  I do have a problem with teachers calling in sick when they are not and schools being closed.  Is it fair for the kids to have to make up this time and go to school into their summer break because of this?  No.

I think there is childishness coming from both sides.  There are some points that I agree and disagree with on both sides.

As to the heated discussion below about inciting violence.....I have yet to see the WI protesters incite violence.  They have a right to depict any politician with a Hitler mustache.....just as the tea party people do.  I don't believe the tea party incited violence either so I think both sides to accuse either side of that is absolutely ridiculous and just goes to show how immature and childish we can be.

So....I'm trying to be (stealing a phrase from Bill O'Reilly) fair and balanced here.

No spin.  Just my personal thoughts on the situation.

This is not about the budget. Purely about - busting unions for SM

political gain in future elections. Plain and simple.

absolutely about the budget - WI MT

What part of WI is trying to balance a debt of 3.6 billion did you not understand? What part of local governments pay 80% of their money to payroll and pensions did you not listen to? The money is gone. There is no more money to steal from the actual private workers to pay to the public sector. The teachers claim tax the rich, but in fact they are the rich. Right now in WI state employees pay NOTHING towards their health insurance and are being asked to pay $175 a month. Right now they pay $1 for every $57 they will get in a pension and they are asked to contribute 5.6%. The state workers will still have the option to be part of a union but it will not be mandatory.

I have posted this before, but our school district DEMANDED a 4% increase for their teachers for this and next year, would not consider a pay freeze or anything less than 4% and so it came to a vote. The voters said no. There is no reason to pay a PE teacher 98K plus benefits who is so overweight she teaches from a chair and can only teach PT due to her "health." There is no reason to pay the superintendant almost 200K for a school district of less than 2000 kids where in fact 51% of the kids are on reduced or free lunches because the parents make less than the poverty level. Absolutely about the budget.

Ummm, all contribution concessions have been offered - and rejected by Walker

despite the fact (by his own claim) this would balance the budget. Absolutely about union busting.

Dont act so blind. The states are broke!!! It IS - about the budget -wake up!.nm

I am sadly uninformed but I caught a piece of it on Diane Sawyer. From what I gather, the people who took a lower pay so they could have better retirement benefits are now going to lose those benefits? In my opinion, the lower pay was to partially pay for the better retirement benefits. So now they aren't going to get them and they are old and have already paid for something they are not going to get? If I understand it right, that is just wrong wrong wrong. As far as the others, I am retired now and I didn't have the ability to save or build anything and I have no support system. I am lucky I earned enough to live on Social Security at this time, but I fear for the future. Maybe I won't live long enough for it to be intolerable but if it is, what are they going to do? Let us all die?? I too hate unions. My father was a trucker in the Teamsters Union and they were nothing but a bunch of thugs IMO. There was a strike once and my dad was just going over the picket line to get his CAR out of the lot and they threw bricks at him and slashed his convertible top and what all. It was a nightmare. Of course, truckers now make less than half of my dad's salary back then. I made more as an MT than they do now.

Why Do You Think There Are Protests In Nov 26, 2014
Surely they do not really care that much about Michael Brown or Darren Wilson personally.  Do you think it is all unjustified protesting?  Michael Brown ISSUE was a spark to a movement.  This movement represents 2 things: 1.  Racial discrimination by police/authority and society in the U.S. 2.  Police aggression and brutality/over-reaction, frequently against people of color (brown and tan).   Obviously, the extreme looting/burning in St. Louis is out of line.&n ...

In my opinion, this is getting out of control and this latest stunt on the house floor is out of line. Co-founder of the Illinois Black Panthers, Rep. Trump Protests In CA Are Getting ViolentApr 29, 2016
Yesterday a Trump supporter was beaten about the face. Last night, a cop car had it's back window busted out and someome stomped on the roof. Arrests were made.Today in Burlingame (sp) at the state convention, protesters got inside the hotel where Trump was going to speak but were pushed back out. They did try it again but there are 100 cops there. The protesters broke through the barricades twice. One supporter was smacked around when he tried to get through the crowd into the building. On a "breaking news point" this morning, it was stated that protestors stormed a school in the ME. Haven't found anything to verify this yet. Some managed to get inside and pull down a German flag before police with tear gas forced the crowd to retreat. – Egypt’s influential and well-organized Muslim Brotherhood canceled nationwide p ...

Obama Needs To Stay At The WH During Middle East ProtestsSep 13, 2012
This article is by Scott Paulson and over the attacks and I completely agree with him. Following protests in the capital of Egypt this week, the deadly attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya that took the life of four Americans yesterday, and the latest aggressive protests at the U.S. Embassy in Yemen’s capital that are occurring today, President Barack Obama needs to stay in Washington, D.C., suspend campaigning, and address the threats against Americans in the Middle East. France Bans Protests Against Blasphemous Cartoons!Sep 22, 2012
PARIS: France banned protests on Friday against cartoons published by a satirical weekly denigrating Islam’s Prophet Mohammad as part of a security clamp-down while prayers took place across the Muslim world. The country’s Muslim population, drawn largely from ex-colonies in North and West Africa, shrugged off the controversy as imams in mosques denounced the pictures but urged their followers to remain calm. The drawings have stoked a furore over an anti-Islam film made in Ca ...

I Actually Agree And Disagree With Both SidesJul 16, 2011
I do believe that we need to bring in more tax revenue.  I agree with the pres on that one.  However, I don't believe raising the taxes on the rich is the answer.  That alone still will not cover the amount of money we are spending.  I also think that the initial step in bringing in more tax revenue is to close loopholes in the tax code.  We are in major need of tax reform here.  What good is taxing the rich more when you have big companies like GE not paying A ...
