Stand Your Ground/Increased Homicides

I personally don't want a bunch of self-appointed protectors running around, tyvm.

I personally am only interested in protecting me and mine but I'll bet anything, if you felt threatened and feared for your life and had no form of protection, you would be looking for a "self-appointed protector." Just bet you would.

Except statistically, - Vigilante

They are far more likely to accidentally shoot someone (often themselves) than ever be a hero who saves some old lady from a mugging.

Except, more people are killed with - hammers & clubs each year than rifles

[ In Reply To ..]
This, according to FBI annual crime statistics.

Maybe hammers and clubs should be registered and/or banned?
Well then obviously, we should ignore gun problems. - Vigilante
[ In Reply To ..]
Everyone has easy access to hammers and clubs. Can you imagine if guns were so prevalent? (BTW, why specifically rifles? What about other guns?)
A quick peek at the entire FBI study will answer - that question.

Garden variety right-wing data cherry-picking, taken out of context of course.
Interesting that there are more deaths - from hands/feet/fists
[ In Reply To ..]
than from rifles (Feinstein's target).
I see there were only 12 homicides by explosives. - We should legalize them.

by purveyors, 40% of whom are not required to conduct a basic background check. BTW, DF's new bill will not be confined to an arms ban. It also addresses assault weapons definition, large capacity ammo devices, and registration requirements and criteria, the idea being to establish uniform standards that can facilitate the development of a useful arms database for criminal law enforcement purposes.
cherry-picking? They're not even in the orchard! - nm

FBI study shows firearms are overwhelmingly the weapon of choice - in homicides.
[ In Reply To ..]

Using 2011 figures, guns (the number one killer weapon) are used in more than 2/3rds of all homicides.  In other words, they are chosen by a 2:1 margin over all other weapon types combined.

Where on earth did you get this information? All the other methods of homicide COMBINED do not even equal the number of homicides by firearm. See the FBI link attached.

OP specifically said "rifles," - and she would be correct.
[ In Reply To ..]
However, combine ALL firearms and YOU would be correct, according to the FBI study cited.
you're right - I went off half-cocked - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
However, given that homicide by "Firearms, Type not Stated" tallies 1,587 for 2011 alone, rifles may well surpass blunt objects as the weapon of choice. Hands and feet certainly do. Perhaps we can split the difference in the interest of the bigger picture.
Good point. - nm

The wording of DF's bill would allow the govt to stretch the meaning to include ALL firearms, not just assault weapons.

Her bill attempts to register every single gun in this country. In fact, in one part of her summary, it states:
"Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by:
Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment;
Exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes; and
Exempting antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons.

But the next stage of her summary states:
"Requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act, to include:
Background check of owner and any transferee;
Type and serial number of the firearm;
Positive identification, including photograph and fingerprint;
Certification from local law enforcement of identity and that possession would not violate State or local law; and
Dedicated funding for ATF to implement registration.

So, in one breath, she grandfather's some guns and in the very next sentence, she will force the grandfathered gun owners to be registered with the NFA, have background checks, photographs, finger prints, etc.

Any attempt to have any type of "gun registration" will only lead law abiding gun owners to being a criminal. What percentage of criminals will run out and register their guns? I just can't picture that ever happening.

Gun registration has often led to gun confiscation (Hitler for one), and that is simply fact. Often confiscation has led to tyranny by those governments on their populations.

Crime Rates in States with Stand Your Ground or the Castle Doctrine - backwards typist

[ In Reply To ..]
is always being studied. It was found that the law's effect on crime rates is disputed between supporters and critics of the law.

States adopting these laws reduced murder rates by 9 percent and overall violent crime by 11 percent, and that occurs even after accounting for a range of other factors such as national crime trends, law enforcement variables (arrest, execution, and imprisonment rates), income and poverty measures (poverty and unemployment rates, per capita real income, as well as income maintenance, retirement, and unemployment payments), demographic changes (broken down by race, gender and age), and the national average changes in crime rates from year-to-year and average differences across states (the fixed year and state effects).
