Update on the Ground Zero Mosque

Posted: Jul 8, 2011

The original and controversial Imam Faisel Rauf and developer Sharif El Gamar parted ways awhile back. A new imam was brought on board but he didn't last long after making some rather embarrassing and provocative statements regarding homosexuality and Islam.

[Abdallah] Adhami, 44, said being gay was a 'painful trial' which comes as a result of past trauma. He said: 'An enormously overwhelming percentage of people struggle with homosexual feeling because of some form of violent emotional or sexual abuse at some point in their life. A small, tiny percentage of people are born with a natural inclination that they cannot explain. You find this in the animal kingdom at some level as well.'
Adhami also apparently said that people who leave Islam should go to jail!
Quite a homophobe!

It is also being reported that the developer Sharif El Gamal has been unable to raise very much money for the $100 million project . (IMO that could be due to the scrutiny donors know they will endure and they probably won't pass the smell test!)

So the good news is it looks highly possible that this mosque will never be built.

The mosque is there. People go there and pray every day, as they were doing long before the controversy. What may not be built is the community center, including the basketball court, the fitness center, culinary school, art exhibition hall, and child care services, that would serve ALL New Yorkers in the community. Good news, right?

Park51 mosque quietly makes progress - Update on your update.

The smell test? Really?

Nine months since it dominated headlines and incited rallies at Ground Zero, the Park51 Islamic Cultural Center in Lower Manhattan is quietly moving closer towards becoming a reality. NPR spoke with developer Sharif El-Gamal, CEO of Soho Properties, who said the center has been building an advisory board and staff, has compiled a presentation for potential funders and applied for 501(c)3 tax-exempt status last November. Though ground is still far from being broken on a new building, the current structure is housing Arabic classes, Islamic prayer services, film showings and meetings between Shiites and Sunnis.

But learning from what Gamal called the "lots of mistakes" he made when announcing names of individual funders and imams, Gamal said he's keeping the new people involved in the project closer to the vest and does not want to get ahead of himself. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the imam initially associated with the center, is no longer involved with the project, which calls for a museum, a Sept. 11 memorial, a place for interfaith meetings, a library, an auditorium, a pool, wellness, fitness and sports centers, a culinary school, child care facilities and a restaurant above a ground-floor mosque. Gamal has already invested more than $2 million into the project, but a new building -- the first step in the transformation -- is still at least five years away, he said. Projected cost of the community center is around $100 million.

Sorry to burst the bubble.

FBIs Mosque OutreachApr 02, 2012
I'm usually not a big fan of the ACLU, but if this report is correct, it's bordering on creepy.    The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted a “mosque outreach” program to compile information on American Muslim organizations and “their constitutionally-protected beliefs and activities, without any suspicion of wrongdoing,” according to documents released by the American Civil Liberties Union. According to the ACLU, documents show that the FB ...

Hillary’s State Dept. Blocked Investigation Into Orlando Killer’s MosqueJun 13, 2016
Hillary Clinton’s State Dept. shut down an investigation into the mosque Orlando killer Omar Mir Siddique Mateen attended because it “unfairly singled out Muslims.” The Fort Pierce Islamic Center, where Mateen worshipped several times a week, was under investigation by both the FBI and DHS as early as 2011 for ties to a worldwide Islamic movement known as Tablighi Jamaal which was linked to several terrorist organizations. But the investigation was shut down under pressure from the ...

Ground Beef TrickJan 26, 2012
If anyone has purchased ground beef lately, you know the price is skyrocketing and 1 lb of ground beef doesn't go very far to feed a family of 4.   I buy it fairly lean (so they claim on the package but still a lot of grease).   If I'm making a meatloaf, I would normally toss a bit of rolled oats in to fill and make the ground beef go a little further.   However, tonight was taco night and as I was preparing the beef, an idea hit me.  Can't really disguise oat ...

Well Done, Mr. President! Wreath-Laying Ceremony At Ground ZeroMay 05, 2011
I've never wanted to visit Ground Zero, even when I was nearby, but I'm glad the President went there. At first I wondered why he was going and what he hoped to achieve. Now I'm glad he went. It was a moving ceremony that paid respect appropriately. Well done, Mr. President! You make me proud. ...

Islam Plants Flag Of Victory At Ground ZeroAug 04, 2010
The world should know that the ‘Cordoba Initiative,’ the New York City based organization desiring to construct a massive Islamic house of prayer at ‘Ground Zero,’ has posted on its website, a peculiar and disingenuous statement indicating the desire to bring back the atmosphere of, “interfaith tolerance and respect that we have longed for since Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together in harmony and prosperity eight hundred years ago.” I point ...

AP Interview: Iraq Premier Nixes US Ground TroopsSep 18, 2014
Oh, look. The new leader of Iraq does not want and will not allow ground troops from other countries in Iraq. How can we continue to blame Obama for this the same way he is blamed for Bush's Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to remove all ground troops from Iraq by 12/31/2011? According to the SOFA signed by Bush in 2008, a system had to be established for Iraqi approval of every single US mission. Every single time that US troops leave their bases, it has to be cleared by the Iraqis. Accor ...

Judge Seeks Middle Ground In Fast And Furious LawsuitJul 08, 2014
5/5/14: A federal judge said Thursday she’s inclined to split the difference between Congress and the White House in a lawsuit stemming from President Barack Obama’s decision to shield some Justice Department records from a House probe into the flawed gunrunning investigation known as Operation Fast and Furious. Last year, the Obama administration asked Jackson to throw out the lawsuit, arguing that the dispute was not an appropriate one to be resolved by the courts. She ruled to t ...

Update And Asking For More Help. Sep 24, 2010
I posted this  a couple months ago. Basically, it's about being depressed, having socially anxiety (or maybe avoidant personality disorder). http://forum.mtstars.com/245664.html Well, instead of getting help then, I decided to get another MT job to try one more time. And I am getting worse. I realize I need to get help now, or my life is not going to go anywhere. I'm starting to have more suicidal thoughts and anxiety attacks. I don't have money to go to a doctor. I know I ...

E-cig UpdateJul 26, 2010
Since this thread started last week, I ordered, received, and have been using e-cigs for 4 days.  They're awesome.  I've smoked since a teenager - before cigarettes were taboo.  Since working at home, I was smoking 2+ packs a day.  I'm now smoking maybe 8 cigarettes a day, with absolutely no withdrawal.  When I smoke a real cig now, it's more of a choice rather than a necessity.  When I run out of my cigs, I won't be buying a new supply ...

Update On HJ Res. 15Jan 07, 2013
Did some more research on this and apparently Rep. Jose Serrano (D-NY) is simply a fanatic about repealing the 22nd amendment.  He actually has tried this before (HJ Res. 5) back in 2009, so I'm guessing it'll get about as far this time as it did last time. I would, however, like to have a discussion about the pros and cons of this bill - apparently there are some that would like to see this amendment repealed.  I'm actually for more term limits - senate, house, supreme ...

I started my new job June 9th and stayed on to help finish out the pay period. Well, my legs and ankles are mostly normal now. I think I lost 10-15 pounds and took finally four Torsemide two morning and two in afternoon to do it. Another Update On New ProfessionApr 11, 2012
Well, it has been a month, short of 5 days, that I walked away from the medical field and medical transcription after over 23 years.  I have to say that it has been the best thing that I have done for myself and my family in forever.  The work schedule is a little screwy (dispatcher for law enforcement) but with no small kids and my husband already in law enforcement for 27 years, it has been adaptable for us.  The first week was spent becoming certified on state and national comm ...
