Natural Gas drilling hazards not confined to below ground

Posted: Jun 22, 2010

This article is long, but the jist is....since they opened the Marcellas Shale operations in PA, there have been numerous accidents by companies of EOG of TX, Chesapeake Appalachia, Fortuna aka Talisman, Chief Oil and Gas, Cabot Oil and Gas, and others.

They have polluted private property and wells, ponds, streams, and the ground with benzene, hydrochloric acid, oil, diesel fuel, and wastewater.

They are destroying some of the most beautiful areas in the state.  It's really all caused by carelessness, but the fines DEP is saddling them with are miniscle compared to the damages being caused.  To get to the areas, they build roads....buy using a dozer to plow down trees. That's it. Trucks must drive over the stumps. At least 3 trucks a week wind up on their sides because of it.

Daily Show Last Night - Guest

Josh Fox was on the Daily Show last night and he apparently has a show on HBO called Gasland. In it, he has traveled around the country and found people where this shale high-pressure drilling for natural gas has wreaked havoc on the water supplies. They showed a clip where this fella was able to light the water on fire as it came out of his tap. Some apparently want to dismiss it as many of the people this is happening to are in rural hours, but as Mr. Fox pointed out, this is the water that is also being used to supply many large cities. It was pretty frightening really. LOL I'll think twice about having the oven on while I'm doing dishes.

Wish I could have seen that. Do they ever do re-runs? - Backwards Typist

Some of the streams that had 'wild' fish (not stocked by the game commission) turned a dark burnt orange.

There have been at least 9 accidents that are known. Who knows how many others that were covered up.

I don't live in those areas, but we used to visit there a lot. We thought about moving there for a long time, but doubt it now.

Heck, on our property, which is all shale, if it rains hard and heavy, we have oil coming out of the ground from our shale. Shame it's not enough to do something with it. :-(

I can't tell you exactly the times because I'm in central zone so we're a little 'off', but it's on several times during the course of the day. I know they've also got full episodes on-line, too.
Dang. Changed the channel and caught the last sentence. - Backwards Typist

Army Mom Confined To Base After Skipping Deployment To Care For BabyNov 16, 2009
This is a tough one. Do you think they should go ahead and send her to Afghanistan? Single-mother Alexis Hutchinson refused to deploy to Afghanistan on Nov. 5, she said, because she didn't have anyone to take care of her infant son. Now she's confined to the Georgia base where she is stationed, facing criminal prosecution by the Army.Hutchinson's civilian lawyer told the Huffington Post that Hutchinson, 21, initially planned for her 10-month-old son to stay with his grandmother in ...

On Drilling MoratoriumJul 14, 2010
So many jump to conclusions. We always have multiple views on issues. This is one of those. This Times editorial does a good job of reasoning why this moratorium is necessary. ================================ Editorial A New, and Necessary, Moratorium Published: July 13, 2010 Despite legal challenges from industry, complaints from local politicians and bad rulings from unsympathetic judges, the Obama administration has rightly chosen to reaffirm its decision in May to suspend deep-water dr ...

Texas Governor Pans Drilling Safety Regulations, Suggests 'God' To Blame For May 04, 2010
By Stephen C. WebsterMonday, May 3rd, 2010 -- 8:34 pm If the very Christian, very Republican governor of Texas is right on this one, he may soon find it politically expedient to rethink his allegiances, what with 2010 being an election year and all. That's right: according to Republican Rick Perry, no amount of safety requirements can prevent an "act of God," which may or may not have occurred in the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in 11 dead oil rig workers and a gusher of oil jetting over 2 m ...

Perimenopause Questions - Looking For NaturalNov 01, 2014
Been visiting many different sites regarding perimenopause.  That is what I have.  While I don't have all the systems I do have 95% of them (luckily no hot flashes or night sweats though).  What really is getting to me is urinary incontinence.  It doesn't matter how much I try and hold it until I can make it to the bathroom, it doesn't work.  Been looking up what vitamins I should be taking to help control some of the symptoms (not going to go on rx meds) ...

Forget About ISIS. A Natural Disaster Is Upon Us...smAug 02, 2016
The thousands of mothers, many of whom will give birth to babies that will either die or require 24/7 complete care for the rest of their lives because they have little or no brains, will be vilified and blamed for needing help. All the while, the Congress has gone home on vacation without a thought to federal aide to the most vulnerable communities. Wake up people. This is not a joke! The entire southern half of the country is at risk. ...

Ground Beef TrickJan 26, 2012
If anyone has purchased ground beef lately, you know the price is skyrocketing and 1 lb of ground beef doesn't go very far to feed a family of 4.   I buy it fairly lean (so they claim on the package but still a lot of grease).   If I'm making a meatloaf, I would normally toss a bit of rolled oats in to fill and make the ground beef go a little further.   However, tonight was taco night and as I was preparing the beef, an idea hit me.  Can't really disguise oat ...

Any Suggestions For Natural Supplements For Menopause Symptoms?Nov 11, 2015
I'm 48 and started having weird periods about six months ago.  Kind of figured I was gearing up for menopause.  Ive had a couple of hot flashes, but and just irregular bleeding, but that's about it.  Well, I skipped my last couple of periods and thought great I'm done with periods.  Got my period a couple of days ago, and whew boy did I feel like crap.  I have been emotionally wrecked for two days - crying at the drop of a hat and I've just felt ...

Islam Plants Flag Of Victory At Ground ZeroAug 04, 2010
The world should know that the ‘Cordoba Initiative,’ the New York City based organization desiring to construct a massive Islamic house of prayer at ‘Ground Zero,’ has posted on its website, a peculiar and disingenuous statement indicating the desire to bring back the atmosphere of, “interfaith tolerance and respect that we have longed for since Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together in harmony and prosperity eight hundred years ago.” I point ...

AP Interview: Iraq Premier Nixes US Ground TroopsSep 18, 2014
Oh, look. The new leader of Iraq does not want and will not allow ground troops from other countries in Iraq. How can we continue to blame Obama for this the same way he is blamed for Bush's Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to remove all ground troops from Iraq by 12/31/2011? According to the SOFA signed by Bush in 2008, a system had to be established for Iraqi approval of every single US mission. Every single time that US troops leave their bases, it has to be cleared by the Iraqis. Accor ...

Judge Seeks Middle Ground In Fast And Furious LawsuitJul 08, 2014
5/5/14: A federal judge said Thursday she’s inclined to split the difference between Congress and the White House in a lawsuit stemming from President Barack Obama’s decision to shield some Justice Department records from a House probe into the flawed gunrunning investigation known as Operation Fast and Furious. Last year, the Obama administration asked Jackson to throw out the lawsuit, arguing that the dispute was not an appropriate one to be resolved by the courts. She ruled to t ...

Whatever Happened To "No Troops On The Ground"Oct 31, 2015
Obama is sending a "small" contingent of 30-50 Special Forces troops to Iraq and Syria.Did he ever pull the other 3500 to 5000 troops out?  You don't hear about them anymore. In June of last year, he sent 1500, which brought the number up to 2900 to Iraq. Then in June of this year, he supposedly sent another 450.  Isn't it funny that he kept saying there would be no troops on the ground year after year, month after month through his presidency, yet keeps putting troops on th ...
