Posted: Mar 13, 2012

Here is a link to how gas prices fluctuated during the last presidental election in 2008.  I am not drawing any conclusions and leave you to draw your own.

dont let the periodic pleas for civility and rational discussion fool you. Actual topics go undiscussed frequently. Notice not one mention of the soldier who killed 16 civilians but plenty on Sarah Palin. You have to know your audience.

I have noticed that. - nm

I have an opinion on the soldier who shot those 16 people.

This guy apparently had been sent on multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, though I believe this was his first tour to Afghanistan.

I personally cannot even begin to understand what it must be like to be on MULTIPLE deployments, where you literally don't know from one step you take, or another, whether it will be the very LAST step of your life.

This man apparently suffers from some type of brain injury.

With all these multiple deployments and the almost guaranteed PTSD that comes along with it, our own government works these soldiers like mules until they're damaged emotionally and mentally.

Now, they're talking about it being a death sentence case.

Is this how we are always going to treat our soldiers: Work them to death and then kill them?

Knowing way too much about PTSD (personally and with Vietnam vet friends), the sole fault lies with our government in what they did to this soldier and other soldiers. At least, that's my opinion.

Thanks for bringing up the subject. I appreciate it.

Thanks for posting that. I also liked the link - mthead

to Fox news from back in 2008 where they were making the case that the president does not control oil prices. Apparently, Bush did not control oil prices but Obama can. Go figure.

It makes me crazy when the news pundits say...sm - nm

that Obama's re-election will hinge on gas prices.

Price of gasoline re Keystone Pipeline. - Let me see......

[ In Reply To ..]
Briefly, as already posted, the President does not set gasoline prices. The Keystone Pipeline does not make us "less dependent on foreign oil." The purpose is to bring shale oil from Canada (a foreign country) down to refineries in the Gulf of Mexico (not it is not for us), to be refined and exported, mostly to China. Our largest export at the moment is gasoline. This may provide temporary jobs, but as far as the price of gasoline.... FYI - The oil companies are not in the business of protecting our national interests by keeping all that gasoline in the domestic market.
That is my understanding as well. I think - mthead

the jobs related to the Keystone pipeline will be primarily in building the pipeline, so they would be temporary jobs, with the exception of folks employed to maintain it.
Why doesn't Canada build their own refinery? sm - oldtimer
[ In Reply To ..]
I know nothing about the cost of building a refinery but that pipeline must carry a pretty hefty price. Can anyone tell be who benefits from the Keystone pipeline? It doesn't sound like the American people would.
Does Canada have a Clean Air Act? - mthead

I ask b/c my friend was telling me about a book her Texan friend wrote about the oil industry in Texas. According to the author, our refineries are really old b/c the oil companies haven't built any new ones since the passage of the Clean Air Act, citing that it's too expensive to build them any cleaner. Why can't the oil companies take some of their billions of profits and build cleaner refineries? That can put people to work, too.

I used to be dead-set against more drilling in the U.S., but IMHO, we will come to that eventually and we should make the oil companies set aside funds for cleaning up the inevitable spill before they drill rather than forcing the taxpayers to pay for the cleanup after a spill. I think BP probably did an adequate job with the Gulf spill, but they are probably the exception and not the rule. (The Exxon Valdez spill comes to mind). It is well documented that the aftereffects of spills last for decades, but I think we will eventually bow to public, political, and economic pressures and allow more drilling on our soil, for better or worse.

My own grandmother came over from Poland at the age of 15 (in about 1915) with her 3 YOUNGER brothers. I wonder if she was a "legal" immigrant such as it was in those days. Romney Would Index SS Benefit To Prices Rather ThanSep 22, 2012
Here's short explanation (if you stick to the summary at the top) of the effects of the various ways we can handle SS benefit increases. It really seems like our choice is to either 1. Accept lower and lower payments over the years, indexed to prices (Republican plan), or 2. Increase our SS tax paid with each paycheck now (7.5%+ us and 7.5%+ employer) and get benefits that keep pace with general income levels over the years, indexed to wages (the way we've been doing it). http://www ...

Syria: Oil Prices Vs Wall StreetAug 29, 2013
That September drop you were expecting for gasoline prices? Don't hold your breath. Currently, gasoline averages $3.55 a gallon nationally, down from $3.63 a month ago. Most analysts had expected a drop to about $3.40 by early fall on seasonal demand slumping following the summer driving season. Not now. Some forecasters predict a short-term spike of up to 10 cents a gallon. Crude oil prices and gas futures are soaring on growing fears that if the U.S. military strikes at Syria for its h ...

Get Ready For Restaurants To Increase Prices. Apr 09, 2017
about to come into effect, and it could sink pizza franchises nationwide.
