Some stats to put the cost of food stamps into perspective. sm

Posted: May 21, 2015

The US spends $700 billion a year on oil subsidies which works out to $5,737 per taxpayer. By contrast, food stamps cost the average taxpayer $36/year.

;

Let's get rid of both. They drive up the cost of oil and food, so does - section 8 housing in the rental

market, college costs by the govt getting involved, and health care.

Just pray you don't ever need food stamps. - Poverty can happen to anyone.

Be grateful for what you have, but don't go vilifying people who aren't as fortunate.

There are posts below that address this issue, and making nonemotional - statements about an industry

with billions in fraud is not vilifying. No one is ever going to remove the safety net.
Did you know illegals get EBT cards in some states? - NM

The Feds spent $100 billion just last year on food stamps, - including school lunch program

and WIC. No one is against helping people temporarily, but once that becomes over 50% of the voting public, there's just no way to sustain it.
Maybe the answer is to start bringing jobs back to - America & paying a living wage for them.

Maybe jobs would come back to America if we got rid of - so many regulations that

make it impossible to do business and be competitive.
The churches should definitely feed - the illegals

If the GOP had its way, every social safety net - in the country would be shut down.

Pretty selfish if you ask me. "I've got mine, (never mind that I got it by stomping on others), and everyone else can just fend for themselves."
I don't equate compassion with how much money - is spent on a gov program. nm

Was just talking to MIL about this - don't understand the

phenomenon of "I've got mine, you must be doing something wrong to need help, you're not worth it, let's just not offer any help."

It's selfishness, pure and simple. There are - so many selfish people in the U.S.

Some just don't seem to understand where - their benefits come from

Friend on Social Security disability for severe depression, 4 children, and votes Republican...they have openly made fun of people like her and threatened to decrease benefits...still she votes Republican.

Another friend, 2 children, on social security disability due to back injury and MS...she works periodically, then is reinjured, votes Republican...same thing.

Acquaintance, unemployed, elderly, husband on social security, her entire church (close-knit group) knows of her plight and, frankly, several of their members, who receive assistance and work at WM type jobs, they all vote Republican.

They must just not feel they deserve to be treated as people.

Sounds like you know some intelligent & sensible people. - Dixie from KY

Good for you!
Problem is, they will call me when they - run out of money--I'm an MT
[ In Reply To ..]
Less and less of that available - LOL (I wish) I have taken them both food and loaned money whenever I could.

I am going to find out the sociological term for people who are struggling, but think it is okay to ignore those who are struggling more. They also seem to have blinders on as to how tenuous their own situation is, and all the time thinking that if they promote the rich getting richer, perhaps they will throw them a bone or two that will make everything all right. Wake up and smell the coffee---it's not happening, and it is getting worse.
I think it's the people who have learned to work the system - that are made fun of,
[ In Reply To ..]
not to real people in need. I know some of both. I know people who feel they are entitled to money and never think it's enough (a relative) and I also have a neighbor who is so embarrassed by EBT he shops at night so no one will see him.

It's the first kind that people make fun of, not the second.
Those that may be "working the system" are far, - far outnumbered by those in true need.
[ In Reply To ..]
No matter what the situation or the "system", there are always going to be people that try to beat it for their own gain. (Just look at MTSOs, and other large corporations.)

I think more effort should be put into catching those who abuse the system and kicking them out of it, and less effort should be put into shaming the majority of people who really need help.
It's no so much selfisness as people are tired of working and so much of - their tax money goes for
[ In Reply To ..]
redistribution in all forms.

I could give examples about how govt regulations stop job growth, and more jobs would be created, thus people could find better jobs, but I know it's pointless here.
Lack of government regulations have contributed - to what has happened with our
[ In Reply To ..]
MT jobs. So now I don't have a job, and I need some of the help people in this thread are griping about. If I had a job that supported me, like I used to have, I'd be more than happy to pay taxes that help people who were less fortunate. That's a far preferable use for our tax money - to take care of our own - than to spend it on useless, endless wars.
We've become Greece, face it. Any talk of austerity will - be met with protest. Moment
[ In Reply To ..]
of truth. This is like a slow-motion Greek tragedy, speeding up since 2008.
No, it's because the govt siphons off 75% of the money - first that is supposed to go
[ In Reply To ..]
to the program.

The left works on stirring up grievances designed to work off envy, greed and hate. Envy is where they want t tax the rich more even if it does not increase revenue...destroy the rich. Greed is where the government always wants more money and they use the dependents as the reason to siphon off 75% for themselves.
Where are you getting those percentage figures from? - ccc
[ In Reply To ..]
Thin air, perhaps?

The billions in EBT fraud needs to be addressed. I like the idea of - limiting it to healthy foods, like WIC

[ In Reply To ..]
program. Comparing the cost of one form of welfare to another is not a good way to solve problems. It only makes one feel more deserving than the other.

Because that's not big govt/govt monitoring at all, no. Thank you, Repubs AKA Tea Party - Julia Sugarbaker (sm)

Your attempts to enforce religious freedom as law and attempting to limit private food choices and drug testing have been gifts to us - they have shown the American people your true colors and spotlighted your hypocrisy very clearly - and good timing, too, before the 2016 elections - thank you!:)

The key is eliminating a loophole that enables states to help some low-income residents with no ...

My own grandmother came over from Poland at the age of 15 (in about 1915) with her 3 YOUNGER brothers. I wonder if she was a "legal" immigrant such as it was in those days.
