MSNBC, pathetic Toure, says forget 2008 (sm)

Obama must be re-elected to show racial progress in America.  LOLOL - Do people actually use this channel as a news medium?  Maybe sheeple, but I can't imagine a rational minded person doing so.

;

I believe this is a post from people who are fed up - sm

The Republicans MOs math...

That is not what he said. - Not even close.

[ In Reply To ..]
It's what Newsbusters is saying he said. Why not post the actual comments instead of this out-of-context junk? All he did was use a Matrix metaphor to talk about racial perceptions and to draw distinctions between black "superhero" stereotypes vs mere mortal blacks. Nothing was said about how Obama MUST be re-elected to prove racial progress one way or the other. In fact, I've heard Toure argue AGAINST the idea that electing Obama means the country is "post racial" on more than one occasion. I think your problem with Toure has more to do with the idea that he dares to discuss race in America, which IMO is a good thing.

Here's the Matrix metaphor. I see nothing even remotely resembling your interpretation. I understand exactly what he means and find the whole passage relatively benign.

In 2008, Obama was Morpheus and America was Neo, a nation of great potential that had lost its mojo and did not understand reality. Obama offered America the red pill — the chance to vote for him — and we swallowed it. In The Matrix, the red pill took effect immediately, and it wasn’t long before Neo revealed himself to be the One — the Jesus-like figure Morpheus had thought he was. In the real world, change happens much more slowly. When Obama took office, it felt as if the sky were falling and we were close to a depression. We avoided that fate. But it has been a rough few years marked by problems (not all of his making) that include a historic recession, Washington gridlock, the passage of controversial health care legislation, the failure to close the Guantánamo prison, the Middle East explosion and the rhetorical blunder of “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that,” by which the great orator handed the GOP a gift it could mangle into a slogan. After all that, it’s impossible to view Obama as a superhuman magical-Negro figure anymore

All incumbents have natural advantages, but for Obama, incumbency is a double-edged sword. Given the super-human expectations placed on him when he took office, it’s not surprising that he has disappointed some of his followers.

So those poll numbers suggest something very interesting about this country in terms of racial progress. They show American voters embracing a non-magical black man. The magical Negro concept arose from a need to rectify supposed black inferiority with the undeniability of black wisdom by suggesting that wisdom is so alien that its origins cannot be explained by normal scientific methods.

While some may think it complimentary to be considered “magical,” it is infantilizing and offensive because it suggests black excellence is so shocking it can only come from a source that is supernatural. To accept a black leader who is extraordinary yet so human that he cannot be magical is an entirely different prospect than electing a black superhero. Anyone would vote for a superhero who lived up to my mom’s standard of having to be twice as good. But for it to embrace a nonmagical black person who cannot promise anything but hope, intelligence, sweat and experience, now that comes closer to equality. Equality is freedom from having to be twice as good to get ahead.

I disagree - SM

Not the OP, but if you read niblett's magical negro blog you will see Newsbusters did not take anything out of context. By the way, Newsbusters links right to niblett's racist blog, unlike leftwing sites.

Here's niblett's blog:

http://ideas.time.com/2012/09/26/the-magical-negro-falls-to-earth/#ixzz27yKJtuQk

Furthermore, America will never get past the race issue as long as progressives keep fanning the flames of racism.

As a matter of fact, I read that before I posted - the OP

[ In Reply To ..]
There is nothing there to justify Newsbuster's depiction of his comments. The only flame fanning I see is the effort to make much more out of Toure's simplistic magic negro observations what they represent at face value. I neither agree or disagree with what he sees as "signifying" progress, but I do respect his opinion and his right to broadcast and publish it without being subjected to the name-calling and partisan bashing that originates from Toure's earlier piece on racial code words and the Romney campaign's "niggerization" of their opponent. I do happen to agree with those comments, to some extent.

I grew in the South during the 1950s before progress was made in the civil rights arena and certainly do not need lessons from Toure or the GOP on what does and does not constitute racial code. It was spoken in my own household as a second language and I have watched it morph over the years until recent times.

The flames of racism do not need fanning. Unfortunately, they have a seemingly inexhaustible source of fuel. One need look no further than the demographics of GOP voter suppression efforts for evidence as such. I have to wonder what they are going to do once they realize that, moving forward, suppressing minority votes (along with other choice demographic groups) is political suicide for ANY party. How they go about mending their fences in the next couple of decades is going to prove mighty interesting.

That's why it was enclosed in quotes. If you find the word offensive, you should find the campaign tactic completely unacceptable.

There's plenty more where that came from, but I think you get the drift. I have to ask. Why is it that the anti-Muslim film maker's freedom of speech is something the GOP jumps to defend, but repeating this content that was reported nationwide just a few weeks back is now worthy of rebuke and straight-up censorship?

The poster did not use the "n" word anywhere in her post. The word you are referring to she put in quotes was a quote from MSNBC and other places. If you Google the word you will find multiple sites talking about this. Calling someone the N word is insulting, derogatory, inflaming, hateful, and about every other word I can think of. She did not call anyone that.

Wonder no more. Martin Luther King was NOT a Republican. - Politifact link inside. He WAS

carefully nonpartisan, affiliating with no political party.

However, in those days Dr. King conceivably cooouuld have been. In spite of rabid racism in nasty minorities in both the GOP and the Democratic party, the GOP leadership was much more centrist and responsible.

Nowadays, of course, the racists who dumped the Democratic party after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 have joined with their kind in the GOP, and combined they are a significant Republican power block.

You know, many blacks and Hispanics ARE conservative and would love to be able to join the conservative party--if only Republicans would stop kicking them in the face. But that type of Republican makes sure they won't--even if it costs the party everything politically. Way too much to ask. They won't give it up.

Have joined with "their kind." I don't know what to say. I am and know many republicans (some lord have mercy are even black), and we are NOT as a whole racist. I am sure you might find one or two in the party who are racist, just as you will in the democrats (I hope only one or two). As a side, though, if MLK had not been so tragically murdered, he would definitely have been our first black President, and I believe he would have been outstanding. He would definitely have been a uniter and not a divider.
Don't like it? Maybe the GOP should give THEM up. They like - hiding in your skirts and will not go easily.NM

Thank you for your vote of confidence! I've always thought I'm pretty good at admitting there's a lot I don't know.

In this case, though, it's MLK's family member (niece, in case you didn't watch the video) who says that he was a Republican, not the GOP. Just keeping it real. I like to do that.

I don't have a horse in this race and really don't care whether he was a Republican or Democrat. He was a great man. His party affiliation doesn't matter one bit to me.
Hatemongers and radicals have been destroying the GOP. - It is broken. If Romney loses because

of them, as it appears he may, it'll be interesting to see what happens to the GOP.

The bigots and radicals DO like the cloak of respectability normal conservatives provide and will not leave. They've become very powerful within the party. They form enough of the hard-right economic conservative, religious conservative, and social conservative factions that they greatly influence all discussions and make it impossible to work with them.

G.H.W. Bush's kinder, gentler, and, frankly, far more intelligent conservatives may have to form a new party themselves to fix this mess.

And I don't care what anybody says, I'm voting for Romney because I think he's the better choice, not because he's white and Obama is 1/2 black. I'm rational and I've done my research. While Obama is a likeable guy, he's done a poor job and we need new leadership. I like Romney. I think he's a likeable guy, but what is more important is he is the only one who has a plan to help our country. Our country cannot survive another four years of fialed leadership. Romney is hope our country has right now. Oh yeah, I'm 1/2 Hispanic.
