Rep Andre Carson

Posted: Aug 31, 2011

I understand the tea party group is pretty unpopular these days, but is this really a fair assessment?  IMO, the majority of the tea party members do not want to return to a day of slavery or lynching and it's completely unfair to group all the tea party members in with a few that might be racist.  I don't always agree with the tea party, especially the freshman members in congress, but I'd be willing to bet none of them want to hang anyone from a tree.

Thoughts?  Opinions?

Since I am not of a minority race, I cannot speak to that. However, I am concerned about this "back to the 1800's" attitude that seems to be running in the background of society. By this I mean the dissolvement of the collective government policies that are for the good of the people. I am talking about FEMA, Social Security, Medicare, environmental safety regulations, and fair labor laws. I would guess minorities feel threatened by this trend.

I am also somewhat concerned about the television programming. I have noticed "retro" shows called "The Playboy Club", "Pan-Am," etc., (jumping on the success bandwagon of "Mad Men.") Those times were not so good, and I hope that we don't see a glorification of a time where women were subservant sex objects. If it shows the struggle of trying to break through the "glass ceiling" as well, that would probably be a good thing to wake up the younger women who did not have to go through such blatant discrimination.

I am sure the minority races do not want to go "retro" either.

I think Congressman Carson's - Trigger Happy

comment was both disgusting and did nothing but show his own racism. I will be the first to admit that I'm sure there are those who would associate themselves with the Tea Party who are racist, but that doesn't describe everyone in that group. However, I also think that black people voting for Obama merely because he is black is just as racist as not voting for Obama merely because he is black. The race baiting that is going on is insane. It is like instead of moving forward...we have taken several steps back.

As a white person I can honestly say that Obama's skin color means nothing to me one way or another. Just because I disagree with him on political matters doesn't make me racist...nor does it mean I want anybody to be hung from a tree....well...I'd probably make an exception for child molesters. ;)

I truly thought that the first black president would bring the majority of us together but all I see is more divisiveness and more hatred than I've ever witnessed before. Like I said, there are some white folks who dislike black people, but I have to say that with Obama in office, I have heard more and more black people making racist statements.

I am a minority and a woman.... - hmmm

I'm not a member of a tea party organization, but I'm a conservative.

I get tired of people blaming disagreements with the President's policies, or Congress' policies on racism.

When I disagree with them, it's on issues: the budget, monetary policy, foreign policy, that sort of thing. It has nothing to do with color.

I always thought that the tea party's primary motivation was that they wanted Washington to cut spending and be more fiscally responsible.

My daughter asked the other day how our tribe can provide the kinds of services it does to our people (health care, scholarships, job training programs, housing assistance). I told her that once we pay our bills each month, we still have several hundred million in cash in the bank and assets of over $1 billion.

We're not the biggest tribe in the country, but we manage to spend less than we earn.

I think what the tea party is trying to do is to get Washington to do the same.

Nope, do not agree. Where were these - "tea partiers" say 4-5 SM

years ago? I am convinced this is all about Obama and, in some cases, racism. Nope, it's the same repub mantra "pull yourself up by your bootstraps. If you can't, too bad, too sad. We do not want to help anyone, don't care what the situation". Now, boy o boy, let's even get rid of SS, how great will that be? So what if that is the only income you might have when you are old? You should have saved. It's pathetic. IMHO BTW.

I think the T-Party was set into motion back in the Bush years when the Koch brothers, Karl Rove, Chamber of Commerce, Big Oil, etc., started to put a plan in place to take over the Republican party by playing to groups like the Fundamentalist Christians. They have systematically targeted segments of the population and created issues for isolation, devisiveness, and discreditation (homosexuals, abortion/family planning, public education, labor, and climate change.)

Having a mixed-race president was icing on the cake for them. I do not believe there has ever been a joint session of Congress where the president has been treated with such disrespect (the Joe Wilson incident) and actually been harassed by his birth certificate. The signs that the T-Party carried during the campaign were filthy and disgusting, many of the demonstrators being bussed around by Karl Rove's organization.

That said, I believe there are several societal changes that have exacerbated the incivility of the people, i.e., the cable "news" 24/7 "thirst" for the big scandal story, internet blogs in which people can post hatred anonymously, and just the "dumbing down" of the population that is desensitized to mind-numbing TV celebrities, and expects to see that show in our politics and vote "the popular" as winners, and those with ideas and substance may be kicked off the island if they don't fit the "average Joe the Plumber/Barbie doll look".

The thing is, the tribe is taking care of its people - the T-party is taking care of the rich

[ In Reply To ..]
The US government is now having to pay the consequences of the unfunded wars and a falling down infrastructure while trying to deal with unemployment while the corporations sit on huge stashes of offshore cash. I suspect whatever profits your tribe's businesses make goes back to your tribe and is shared by its members? Since environmental damage crosses borders, how do you feel about oil drilling in the gulf and Alaska, fracking, coal mining, nuclear power plants?
Until we can light our homes and power our vehicles - hmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
...by sunlight and wind energy we're kind of limited in our energy resources aren't we?

Yes, our tribe does take care of our own, but we also help our people get education and training that can equip them for jobs in today's economy.

I guess what I don't understand is why you trust the government so much? All they want is your vote. They don't care if you, personally, have a job, have health care, have a roof over your head, any more than the "evil corporations" do.

If you're going to put your stock in the word of any politician of any party or race, you're nothing but a pawn in a game you'll never win.
I guess you got yours - sm

If they had a net worth of at least $30 million and you took every cent of their money, assuming my math is correct, that would add up to $1.089 trillion.

Of course, you couldn't take all of it because some of these people are in Mexico and Canada.

Our deficit is currently $14 trillion.

Sounds like we need more rich people.

Not worried about the SUBSTANTIAL portion of the debt - W's tax cuts generted over time? OK, so
[ In Reply To ..]
why not focus on the lion's share the war machine has produced? Look, let's stop pretending there is only one single magic bullet solution to deficit spending, shall we? It is unthinkable that the poorest and most vulnerable among us could or should shoulder the burdens the intransigent wealthiest and most powerful are unwilling to assume. Obviously, that approach is less than drop in the bucket as well. Get a grip, will ya? Times are tough all over and their stepping up to the plate is long, long overdue.
You're still missing the point. - hmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
If the rich gave all of their wealth, it wouldn't equal the $14 trillion deficit we now have.

End of discussion.
So what? That does not mean then should not pay fair share. - There is more than ONE point
[ In Reply To ..]
and the one you persistently seem to be ignoring is that there is no one-solution majic bullet that will solve the deficit problem. The debt was not created by a single expenditure and will not be effectively controlled by a single source of revenue. Identifying missing revenues and restoring them is the name of the game. Every little bit helps, as does recovering huge chunks of missing monies. Now, how about addressing allowing Ws tax cuts to expire, major cutbacks on the out-of-control drain military spending has on the economy, and REAL jobs creation that will restore taxes currently not being collected from millions and millions and millions of American workers, just for starters. Hint: Extending more and more and more tax breaks for those wealthy alleged "jobs creators" and Big Business, then waiting around for them to hire DOES NOT WORK, and is not a REAL jobs plan.

While we are at it, let's examine those supercorps who pay NO TAXES whatsoever, providing incentives for bringing jobs back onshore and lay off the working poor, since it is a lead-pipe cinch picking their pockets will get us nowhere fast. If you cannot do that, then the discussion never began in the first place and therefore cannot be ended by issuing that juvenile decree of yours.
You mean like GE - that paid virtually no taxes last year? - hmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/general-electric-paid-federal-taxes-2010/story?id=13224558

As ABC even states, "Jeffrey Immelt (CEO of GE) is President Obama's point man on jobs."

The Obama administration gave corporate giant General Electric—the parent company of NBC–$24.9 million in grants from the $787-billion economic “stimulus” law President Barack Obama signed in February 2009, according to records posted by the administration at Recovery.gov.

Despite getting $24.9 million from U.S. taxpayers, GE decreased its U.S.-based employees by 18,000 in 2009, according to the company’s 2009 annual report.

Setting a nice example, isn't he?

Juvenile...actually I am feeling rather spry today.
Chump change compared to the billion in federal contracts - GE got between 2002 and 2004, huh? .
[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe he was following Bush's lead, who probably wasn't rewarding MSNBC for its coverage.

"Federal contracts for General Electric, based in Fairfield, Conn., rose to $3.8 billion during the two years ending Sept. 30, 2004, the last period for which figures are available.

GE, the world's second-biggest company by market value, got $2.8 billion in federal contracts during the same period ending in 2000. GE spent $16 million on lobbying in 2000."

It's odd how GE federal contract figures became unavailable after 2004 don't you think? Being the second largest company in the world, GE has active interests in virtually all sectors of the economy, not to mention the 75% of its federal funds that are dedicated to providing jet engines and militry aircraft. That they got stimulus money should surprise no one. That the TP would try to spin this as rewarding MSNBC's parent company also should surprise no one.

are now receiving health insurance under a program that's always being called "socialist."

The death of "compassionate conservatism" occurred decades ago, and when Republicans see something that might help the poor, middle class, underinsured or uninsured, they become outraged and call it "socialism."

I think a healthy mix of capitalism and socialism is the recipe for a solid nation. The Republicans want to remove all safety nets and change this nation into a very, very poor who service the very, very rich in this country. Doesn't sound like much "compassion," in my opinion.
What bugs me are the people who deny - Socialist
