*With the election in 1948 of Harry Truman, the DNC states "Democrats began the fight to bring down the final barriers of race." To his credit, he did begin to push the Democrats towards a pro-civil rights stance that culminated in the 1960s civil rights laws, but they simply redid what the Republicans did 10 years earlier but were undone by the Democrat support of segregation.
That last line should be 100 years - earlier, not 10.

With regard to the Civil Rights Act, the statistics you cited would have resulted in it not passing, but we all know it was.
The Dems that opposed it were southern Democrats and racists. But 2 Democrats and 2 Republicans were eventually able to come up with a substitute bill after a filibuster, which was passed.
