Just a reminder for dog lovers

Posted: Feb 8, 2014

It's time once again for my favorite event of the year.  The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show airs Monday and Tuesday nights 8-11 p.m.   The first night according to Comcast TV guide wil be aired on CNBC.  The second night is on USA.

I attended the show in 2006 when Rufus, the Colored Bull Terrier won BIS.  What a thrill when they turn the lights down and announce each group winner!   The applause just about brings the house down!

Happy Watching!

Dog lovers? - see msg

A true dog lover would not put a dog through all that crap. I am in no way for any of that stuff, where your animal (or kid, actually), is put through that sort of training so you can show him or her off.

Sorry.

Then my message was even for you, was it? So why reply at all?

For the rest of you who understand what the club and breeders stand for, enjoy!

Just a few more comments - Christine

Each and every year David Frei sends out the message time and time again to do your homework. Don't pick a dog because it's cute, etc. Pick a dog that will fit your family and lifestyle. He deeply loves them, and has several of his own. The breeders are constantly working to breed healthier, happy dogs. They talk of the dogs' favorite toys, how they sleep in bed and are spoiled rotten; even by the handlers. At least they are not starved and dirty on the streets. Yes. I am a dog lover to the core.

And something else. It is a known fact that after many of the dogs have won Westminster and are retired, the owners have to bring them back on the sideline because the dogs just love and miss being there. The Westminster Kennel Club is all about celebrating the dog, and absolutely nothing about causing them harm.

In my younger years, I showed dogs and they loved it. My Irish setter, Jenny, had her tail wagging a mile a minute whenever she went into the ring. She loved "strutting her stuff" and I am the ULTIMATE dog lover, so I never would have done a thing that would have hurt any of them.
Thank You! - Christine

Wish I could have seen your beautiful Jenny going around the ring in all her glory! The Irish Setter, as David Frei says, is one of the most strikingly beautiful dogs in the show.

It's a pleasure to "talk" to an owner of a show dog. These dogs are in mint physical condition. They are socialized with humans and dogs from day one, and win points for agility, which they thrive on! I have seen dogs so anxious to get started on a course they are crying and can barely be held back. The breeder/owner/handler has a deep love and devotion to their dogs, and they are so, so proud to show the world.

Just let me finish by saying to everyone that I didn't mean to start a debate. I just wanted to post the dates and times of the show so fans would not miss it!

I think some of the changes breeders have made over the years are detrimental to their breed. I'm thinking about the German Shepherd and bull dog in particular.
Yes, it is not right - To breed like that
[ In Reply To ..]
I do not believe in over-breeding. We shouldn't mess with nature.

Besides, there are so many animals that need rescue, that to breed is not necessary.
Agree with that - Christine

Some people get too focused on the cosmetics. As you pointed out, not all changes have been good. I guess there will always be those who do things that are unethical. I think the majority of breeders, however, have the dogs' interest in mind. I certainly believe that of the kennel clubs as well.

What are you referring to about GSDs? Their stance -- with the super low hindquarters? If so, I agree with that. We have a GSD who does not have that "show stance," which is something we don't like. We bought her as a puppy locally, and her parents were registered. We chose not to register her with the AKC as we have no desire to breed (she's been spayed) or show her. We were members of our local GSD club, but they were focused on breeding and showing, even though they claimed their mission was more than that. We had to be interviewed to join, and I told them we just wanted to learn more about the breed (even though this is our third GSD - we only have one at a time) and maybe get her involved in socializing events with the other dogs. Our dog happens to have a small white spot on her chest, and the club members commented on how she wasn't show quality because of that (again, we didn't care about that). When it came time to renew as club members, we chose not to as we kind of felt the others were looking down on us as our dog wasn't "good enough" as she didn't have titles, plus their goals were different than ours. She has been the best dog we've ever had, is so happy and loves people and dogs, and we just love her so much! However, I do believe the dogs in the shows are loved very much and taken care of very well.

Show dogs are the most pampered pooches on earth - Geez

[ In Reply To ..]
Get a grip. They aren't beaten and abused into "performing." Their training, which seems to traumatize you just thinking about, consists of teaching them to walk and sometimes trot while on a leash (as ANY AND ALL well-trained dogs should be) and to stand and show "expression" (for which they are usually rewarded with an edible treat). Oh, the other thing they must be is docile, no biting of the judge allowed. That shouldn't require any training.

These show dogs are very much loved and pampered by their owners.

Honestly, go be all Judgey McJudge on a worthwhile topic.

I live in Pennsylvania. Hope you can watch the show. It never disappoints! I have learned so much about Westminster and the breeds, and look forward to it every year. Being there in person at Madison Square Garden was an experience I will never forget! By the way, I know last year it was aired two different times after the original broadcast. Watched it all three times. However, it was on a different network for the re-airings.

I just loved the show tonight! You will laugh at this . . when they showed the Chow I actually said, "There ya go, Nick!" My neighbor had a Chow-Golden mix and she was wonderful. I just love the look of the Chow Chow. The squareness of the body and the coat are just gorgeous. I am so glad you got to see your favorite breed. Tomorrow will be the deciding moment when we see Best In Show!
Almost forgot, Nick - Christine

If you are planning to watch any of the show tomorrow night, it will be aired on USA network at 8 pm Eastern time.

That chow was so beautiful. It looked like a little bear running along. And I loved the comment they made about Martha Stewart. I was not aware that her one of her chows had won the Best of Class a couple of years ago. Like you, I'm interested to see who will be Best in Show. I will be switching from basketball to the dogs! Enjoy!
I just rewatched - Christine

the video on the WM website a few minutes ago from 2010 when Sadie, the magnificent Scottish Terrier won. Had tears in my eyes again, as my family had a male Scottish Terrier, Angus, and a female named Maggie. Dogs do so much for us, and when I see them get the recognition they deserve, it is emotional for me. It is nice talking with you!

I remember that Scottish Terrier--she was magnificent! I have always loved them. They were my mother's favorite dog. I agree with you about dogs. I hope that some day when I grow up and have a successful law practice (a looong time from now, probably), I can afford a chow, a Rottweiler, a Dobie, and a pit. I actually love all dogs! I love cats as well. (And reptiles! Would love to have a Nile monitor, but my landlord said "Not only no, but h*ll no.")

I have 1 cat and he loves to snuggle with me in the morning before I get out of bed.  If you have a lot of cats, do you wake up covered in a blanket of kitties every day?  I think this would be wonderful, but could make it hard to get up!   ...

Question For Pet LoversJul 12, 2010
We just lost our 15 year old cat yesterday.  We had to have him put down.  My daughters and I are devastated.  My husband tells us to go out and get another cat.  I'd love to get one and plan on actually getting two kittens in the future.  I feel guilty going out so soon as Roscoe was part of our family for so long and I don't want it to look like we're replacing him.  For those of you who have lost a pet, how long did you wait to get another one.&nbs ...

Message To My Fellow Dog LoversJul 30, 2011
I am writing this to hopefully prevent someone else from feeling the pain that I feel or your beloved pet from suffering unnecessarily.  My 8-year-old golden retriever became ill this past week.  I googled her symptoms and it led me to a condition called pyometra which I had never heard of.  She didn't quite fit the criteria for that so I assumed she had a stomach virus.  I tried to make her comfortable and take care of her myself but she wasn't getting any better.& ...

For Animal Lovers (especially Cats) Mar 18, 2013
We have stray cats that come around our neighborhood and we've been feeding them.  I know, I know, a mistake, but they were little kittens at the time mostly and so cute.  Now that mating season is upon us, I think there are about 2 or 3 pregnant ones.  I know I shouldn't have started this, but how do I stop?  I don't know if any of the other neighbors feed them or not, and it will make me sick if I see them starving.  What to do?  Sometimes there are ...

For Cat Lovers, Feeling GuiltyJun 04, 2013
I just found out my 2nd cat in 10 years likely has a cryptococcal fungal infection.  The 1st one I did the whole treatment, surgery, biopsy, blood titers, fluconazole (150 bucks a month for a year), cost me over $2000.  She got better, but about 6 months later, it came back and I could not afford to treat her anymore.  I put all that cost on my credit cards. Well fast forward, I now have another cat with the same thing.  Saw the vet (different one) and he wants to do a biops ...

Dog Lovers - Toxic Stuffed ToysMar 27, 2010
This was posted on one of my dog lists by a vet.  An owner brought in his dog who was very sick.  The dog had eaten the stuffing from a child's stuffed toy.  The vet did surgery to remove the obstruction, and found the entire intestines were black and all the tissue dead.  The dog died.  The vet tracked down the toy manufacturer to find out what was in the stuffing, and was told they put in a chemical gel pack that acts as a fire retardant.
