Reid still trying to change the fillibuster rules

Posted: Nov 27, 2012

Why aren't they working on the "fiscal cliff" issues? Doesn't he think that's important? Evidently, he's one who wants to go over the "fiscal cliff." If so, let's remember that come January 1 and remember who didn't care.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid confirmed Monday he will push to change Senate rules and curtail some Republican filibusters next year, setting up a major test of collegiality and power politics in the usually chummy chamber that bills itself as “the world’s most exclusive club.”

Republicans said that if Mr. Reid goes ahead, he’ll not only ruin the unique nature of the Senate, but he’ll poison chances for bipartisan cooperation just as members of the next Congress are taking their seats in January.

The back-and-forth spilled over onto the Senate floor Monday, with Mr. Reid facing off against Sen. Mitch McConnell, the chamber’s top Republican, in a rare and acrid head-to-head debate.

“This is no exaggeration. What these Democrats have in mind is a fundamental change to the way the Senate operates, for the purposes of consolidating their own power,” the Kentucky Republican said. “In the name of efficiency, they would prevent the very possibility of compromise and threaten to make the disputes of the past few years look like mere pillow fights.”

The fight is not only about the filibuster, but the way the Senate writes all of its rules — of which the filibuster is just one example.

Mr. Reid plans to use his newly expanded majority to make the changes on the first day of the new Congress next year, which is the only time rules can be adopted on a simple majority vote. Any other time, a rules change requires a two-third vote, and most major changes are done through the two-thirds method.

Mr. Reid, though, said Republican blockades of bill after bill have left him no choice but to use the majority route — dubbed the “nuclear option” in some quarters — and said voters in this month’s elections showed they want faster action in the chamber.

Filibuster is ridiculous. - RC

Is there a better example of a complete waste of time than a filibuster? What about real discussion or problem solving? Is that too much to ask from our elected officials?

Of course it is. Anything that makes sense is too much to ask from them. - backwards typist

How much time has the Senate, especially Reid, wasted on this filibuster rule change? I really think Reid is afraid to have real debates because some of the things he states are a stretch.

For example, this morning, Reid stated something that Mitch McConnell "tried to do" back in the '90s. Too bad Mitch was in the session because he proved that Reid lied. Reid stuttered quite a bit after that because he didn't know what to say. Got a real kick out of that.

A grandstanding filibuster - RC

Is much more a waste of time than reform.
Agree, RC. The filibuster was never meant to empower a minority - party to keep Congress from functioning.nm

The filibuster was never meant to be used and abused the - way it has been. The rules have to change. As for

the fiscal deadline, they'll address it, either in pieces or at all once, probably starting some time between Christmas and New Year's.

It's not like they aren't working at it right now. If you look in the papers you'll see quotes from the White House warning of problems we'll face if it goes into effect--prods to the other side to be prepared to make a deal.

Don't forget that those in Congress want their holidays - backwards typist

and I'm afraid that they'll pass something in the middle of the night on 12/24, just like last year.

If you read articles, do you ever read comments that people post? So many people are so disgusted with the way Congress is acting that they don't care one iota if we go over the cliff.

Some posters even state that at least it would stop the spending. LOL

As for the filibuster rule changes, I don't like they way they want to change them. It definitely is not democratic. The change could transform the Senate, which historically has run on compromise, into a body more like the the House of Representatives, where the majority rules with an iron fist, according to the New York Times.

The move would give greater control to the party in the majority, diminishing the minority party's power to slow or stop legislation.

“It will shut down the Senate,” Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the incoming Republican Whip, told Politico, calling the option “such an abuse of power.”

Reid is also considering additional changes, including one that would force senators to actually go through with extended, non-stop talking sessions to enact a filibuster, rather than simply using a threat.

Honestly? I NEVER read the comments. But Congress can always - pass a delay and take it up in 2013. nm

The republicans tried to do this back in 2004 or 2005 and the democrats didn't like it - Biden even went so far as to call it a "power grab." Funny how times change.

Nooo.... The GOP's abuse of the filibuster is the reason - reform is needed. nm

Have a look-see at the video starring Obama, Hillary, Chuckie, Harry, Diane, and Chris, along with Biden against changing the filibuster rules back in 2005. How incensed they were then.

The GOP wasn't abusing it yet, "breaking" the government, not like these past - four years. Anyway, all parties maneuver

for political advantage. What the GOP has been doing will go down in the history books as an egregious abuse of power. From the distance of time, we'll be able to see just how dreadfully this determination of a few men to hold onto their power cost our nation. It has been very bad. This whole recession, which has broken so many families who will never recover, was avoidable.

I've said before, this isn't some stupid team sport. What you're carrying up the field, which direction you're going, what's going to happen if you get there--it all really matters. The GOP leadership betrayed the whole country, and you should not be making excuses for their actions.
How do you think "history" will view Reid and his cohorts? - backwards typist
[ In Reply To ..]
Fair is fair and he should go down in history as "an egregious abuse of power" for never bringing any bills up for votes if made by a Republican in the House and tabled by Reid. Now THAT is an abuse of power.

You're right...it isn't "some stupid team sport" but both sides are guilty of making it so and that's something you can't deny.

Then the democrats were wrong. - RC

I hope something changes this time, but again, it will be interesting to see how they bide by the rules (whatever they may come up with) once they are in the minority again.
