Question: When was the last time a Republican

Posted: Dec 1, 2012

....without the name Bush or Nixon on the ticket?

I heard this question asked this morning on CNN, and I really had to strain my brain to think of an answer.  After pondering it in my head for a while (without benefit of Google/internet), I gave up trying to come up with it.....could only think back to when there WAS either Bush or Nixon on the ticket!!

The answer is 1928....when Herbert Hoover won.  That made me go, "Wow."  There is something kind of wrong with that picture....aren't there ANY other Republicans who can come up with a win??

I hate it when it seems like one family has a lock on things....is it just name recognition?  Or can the Republicans really not come up with a better candidate who actually WANTS the job?!!  I think Jeb Bush seems much more capable than George W., but I don't really think that would be a healthy situation for our country to have a third Bush in the White House.  That would make it seem too much like a monarchy, to me.

I guess I should add... - (S/M)

...that I DO realize that Reagan was a winner in his own right, without NEEDING the Bush name on the ticket. I guess what I posted may have come out wrong. I just thought it was pretty interesting to realize how many decades it's been where there wasn't Nixon or a Bush as either the president or vice president on a winning Republican ticket. Just an intriguing factoid, I guess! :-)

Too many Kennedys, then? - -

You would agree?

Yep, I probably would if... - (S/M)

... they had all been president or vice president. There was only one Kennedy in that position, but I wouldn't have thought it was good had there been several of them in those top two positions, either.

Did you think I was just picking on Republicans or something? I've voted for both parties in my time. This just happened to be a little trivia they mentioned on CNN today, and I thought it was kind of remarkable.

There are so many good men and women who would be wonderful leading this country, and, IMO, it's a shame that the best people don't seem to want the job any more. I can't say that I blame them.

For the sake of the GOP, I hope that they come up with a better candidate next time and also not blow their chances by choosing a poor VP candidate if they DO manage to get a good person at the top of the ticket. A lot of Republicans may love him, but I'd be very surprised if the voters decided to put another Bush (Jeb) in the White House next time. To me, he seems too smart to want it, anyway.

I thought Jeb Bush wasn't interested? - backwards typist

At least he gave me that impression this past election.

I don't think he should run. I don't know what kind of governor he was, and that's besides the fact, but I go along with your opinion of why.

George P Bush - is getting into the act now

Wait til 2020, he'll be there. My prediction. Didn't say I wanted him there, mind you, just that I bet he will be there.

I think you're right, backwards typist. - (S/M)

I got the impression, too, that he wasn't interested. I've heard that some in the GOP would like him to run next time, but I think it would be a mistake for them to pursue him. It's time for some totally fresh blood on the Republican side; and unless things change drastically between now and then, they should stop catering to the ultra right wing of the party. Just my opinion, but I think that ship has sailed. Even Pat Robertson thinks people need to stop denying scientific evidence of the earth's age! I was pleasantly surprised to hear that.

Jeb - bootstraps

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he threw his hat into the Republican primary battle.

He wasn't interested in the last election cycle (this is my opinion) because he didn't want to deal with or answer to the right wing, and he figured Obama wouldn't be a slam-dunk. I'm thinking he figured he'd wait for the Tea Party to run its course, not be tarnished by any campaigning nastiness, and compete against a non-incumbent in 2016.

And, of course putting a little distance time-wise between him and GW doesn't hurt.

But he's really quite different than his brother. He's got a lot going for him politically. He spoke out against the Grover pledge, is married to a Mexican and very immigration reform knowledgeable (not just because of his wife but because of his experience with FL's multiethnic community), signed legislation to protect the FL Everglades and opposed off-shore drilling, and my very favorite--increased the FL lotto-based scholarship program from 75% to 100% for community college students.

But some not so bright moments were the Terry Schiavo case and he signed the "Stand Your Ground" law.

He does have the potential to appeal to a broad spectrum of voters.

Compared to the current Governor of Florida, Rick Scott, I would guess Bush probably has an above-average approval/popularity rating amongst Floridians.

As a Democrat, I would definitely fear a Jeb Bush ticket. I don't underestimate any voter's ability to judge a candidate on his/her own merits.

Gosh, bootstraps.... - (S/M)

....you've given some solid pluses for old Jeb! :-) He sounds like he could be a formidable opponent for the Dems!!

I'm a registered Democrat, too, although, as I said, I've voted for both parties in the past 3 decades, and I'm always willing to vote for a Republican (and have) if I think he or she is better for the country. Jeb does sound like he has a lot going for him, and I heard his name thrown out there again just this morning on one of the news channels as a possible GOP pick in 2016. Of course, the PTB are going to have to convince HIM to run....but still.

All of this makes me wonder how different our country's situation might be today if Jeb had been the Bush in the WH from 2001-2009 instead of Geo. W. :-(

If Jeb DOES run and ends up being the best choice over the other candidate(s), I'd consider him. It still makes me wonder about our country, though...why we can't find better people among a wider populace than to keep looking at the same ones over and over. :-(

I also have a feeling that we could all be taking a third-party (or more?) candidate more seriously next time, too. A lot of voters may start thinking that the time has come for that option, after being burned too many times by both Dems and Repubs.

Every one of them has serious flaws, either of character, personality, world view, experience, or philosophy - and in most cases more than one of these - that I simply cannot stomach. In my experience, it's always a choice between the lesser of two evils, but this election cycle seems to have brought out a spectacularly miserable collection of candidates.  And yes, Sanders and Trump supporters, I mean them too - or perhaps especially them too. The Republican StrategyFeb 19, 2010
It takes awhile to make sense of the entrails of the Republican Party, partly because they are just so toxic, but also because it's actually difficult to comprehend that an American political party can so deliberately sabotage its own government and nation. But after observing their behavior and their policy of, "Just Say No" -- sometimes to their own suggestions, one can only surmise that they long ago left the business of governing and have instead agreed to a covert game plan of destruc ...
