I am a moderate republican. I don't hear many...sm

Posted: Feb 27, 2012

people admitting to that these days.  The party lacks a candidate that is satisfactory to me.  Romney comes closest, but I don't like him either.  He may be the best option for moderates to reclaim the party.  Are there any other moderates out their that now feel disconnected from their party?  For me, I do feel totally disconnected and do not want to be associated with the radical element of the republican party.  I think I may be an independent now.  My sole objective now is not to unseat Obama but rather to wrest my party back from the uncivil, faux patriots, bible thumping zealots that have taken it over.  There is no doubt in my mind that Obama will win reelection. When that happens, hopefully those in our party will take advantage of the next four years to regroup and take control back from the fringe elements.

Well said. I'm right there with you and my husband feels the same. He threatens not to vote but I said we have to get out and vote no matter what(don't know for who). I am not fond of the thought of 4 more years of what we have now but the republican party, at this point, has absolutely nothing to offer.

Great! Thought it was just me - moderate Republican

I'll bet there are a lot of us out here, we're just the silent majority Nixon spoke about. I think a lot of it is because with the reality TV and sensationalism that has taken over the airwaves, the zealots get the most attention. I don't like anyone in the field, I keep hoping someone last minute will pop up....

Maybe what we really need is a VIABLE 3-party system that will shape up the Rep AND the Dems.

You have to realize that the whole political structure of the US has made a huge shift. Historically, Eisenhower, who was a Republican, would now fit better with today's Democrats. The Republicans and the Democrats have shifted so much that the current Democrats are now the moderates and the Republicans have gone off the deep end. I heard that Santorum was saying something about Kennedy's speech making him sick. I gather that was about Kennedy reassuring the people that his Catholic faith would not be forced upon anyone. This was back in the day when Catholics absolutely did not believe in divorce. He is so anti-contraception and anti-education, I am betting divorce is next. JMO.

We will have to vote for whoever gets nominated. If Obama gets re-elected, I'm afraid our country will be unrecognizable in another four years. I'm just glad I work from home with the gas prices now. Thanks, Mr. Prez, for doing everything you can to make this happen.

anything would be better than Obama. I ask what have the repubs offered to make things better and what are their ideas? All I have heard is going back to the way it was in 2008, protecting the rich, more deregulation, protect corporations, more of the same. Why wold this be better for a middle class person. Why vote against your economic interests simply because you hate Obama (and I do hear hate in some of these hit and run posts).

For example, Romney said that he wanted home foreclosures to continue so that "investors" can purchase the properties and put "renters" in.

So he's against the American dream. He basically said so. Said he's not worried about the poor. (I don't think he's ever come across a poor person in order to see that they actually exist.)

Gingrich wants kids to work as janitors in their schools. He said that so I took him at his word. He's against helping the poor. More likely to engage in warfare in order to make the "End Times" a self-fulfilled prophecy.

Paul wants us to get out of other countries where we don't belong and think we should take down our bases. I don't believe he's in favor of continuing in favor of Medicare and Social Security, etc. I like his foreign policy.

And then there's Santorum, the most "dangerous" one, in my opinion. He's against schools on both the federal and state levels. He insists on pushing the "rules" of his religion on everyone in the nation thereby denying THEM freedom to religion. He will most definitely end abortion (in front of a rather one-sided Supreme Court more than likely). More likely to engage in warfare in order to make the "End Times" a self-fulfilled prophecy.

I remember all this talk about a "one-world order" when Bush was in office. I laughed at the thought that something like that could happen right under our noses.

I think you just hit on something people should think about - no party gal

[ In Reply To ..]
I am the first to say people shouldn't vote if there is nobody that we are passionate about. I've never gone with the norm and voted because I had to. Many elections I didn't vote because I didn't care for anyone. However, with that said, you just touched on something I think is very important. If the republicans/independents feel why vote because I don't like the candidate then the unfortunate thing is we will have another 4 years of the same you know what we are going through and that is not good. You're absolutely right. Our country will not be recognizable in four years. More jobs lost, more homes foreclosed on, more wars, more money in their pockets, and the 1% will continue to prosper while we the middle (going on low) income will suffer. I'm feeling this way. Right now at this point it doesn't matter to me who the candidate will be. I will vote just so it will be counted. We cannot go through another 4 years of what we have just been through. The country needs to move forward in a good way. That will never happen under democrats. The stakes are too high. If anyone really cares about the country they need to vote. We need to get the problems resolved.

Let me get this straight. You are saying that...sm - oldtimer

[ In Reply To ..]
if we re-elect Obama the 1% will continue to prosper and the middle and low income 99% will suffer even more? Silly me, I thought it was the other way around.
Yup that's right - have you not been paying attention the last 3 years - no party gal
[ In Reply To ..]
Don't feel silly, many people bought into the lies. If you've been paying attention the last three years then you know whats been going on. They can feed you all the bull they want, but they can't hide from the truth. Middle income people are now becoming low income people. All those promises he made to get elected, well that's just what that was...a gimmick to get elected. And yes, the 1%ers that were under Bush, are still the same 1%ers under Obama and they will continue to be 1%ers because nobody is holding them responsible to pay up. It didn't stop when a democrat took office. It continued on.
So you are saying that Obama should be doing more to get - the 1% to "pay up"? nm
[ In Reply To ..]
.
Yes - no party gal
[ In Reply To ..]
He's not. These same 1%ers under Bush are the same 1%ers under Obama. They were also the same 1%ers under Clinton, etc, etc.

Yes I believe the 1%ers should be paying more but I'm sick of the hypocrisy that everyone screams and shouts about the 1%ers under a republican president and is fine with it under a democrat president.

There is no difference in the parties and I don't understand why that is so hard for everyone to understand.
And you think a republican will change that? - NM
[ In Reply To ..]

That wasn't my point - no party gal - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
My message was not whether an R or D will change that. My point was the outright hypocrisy that people supporting democrats will let those same 1%ers slide and give them a break, but when a republican is in office all we hear ever 5 seconds is "those 1%ers, those 1%ers), as if there are no 1%ers under a democratic president. That's what my post was about.

My message going back to my original message is the republicans have got to win. The stakes are too high. We simply cannot live through a repeat of what has been going on.

To answer your question, no I don't think a republican will change that, but I also know a democrat will not change that. Why should they anyway...they are being supported by those 1%ers.
You got it backwards - for sure

I dont see the logic - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
of your post. You state with absolute certainty that the country will decline if we do not elect a republican. Yet the repubs are putting forth no plan to rectify our problems. Being anti-college, anti-birth control, pro-transvaginal probes, etc., does not address the country's issues. Maintaining the status quo and protecting the wealthy from taxes and the corporations from scrutiny IS NOT a plan to solve our problems. I beg you, think through your assumptions.
here's some logic - noname
[ In Reply To ..]
The repubs are not anti-college, anti-birth control, etc. They just don't think the government should be paying for those things (because when they do they get to make all the rules). And frankly, I don't want MY tax money paying for someone's abortion. If someone is careless or stupid enough to get pregnant when they shouldn't, then they need to figure out their own way out of the mess they created.

The repubs DO have plans to fix things. Like, allowing us to drill for our own oil, which creates jobs, keeps our gas prices lower, and gets us off dependence on people who want to kill us. Some are suggesting a flat tax, which is more fair for all of us, and lowering capital gains so that the people with money will invest in new companies, which again creates jobs. So many people are clueless about the so-called 1%. They already pay the majority of the taxes. Even if they were taxed 100%, yes 100%, it wouldn't even make a dent in the problem.

There are too many social programs, like Obamacare, that they would get rid of. There are better ways to handle the health care issue. Personally, I think everyone should be responsible for buying their own insurance. Why is it a company's job to provide that to you? This leaves you at the mercy of the plan they chose for you. It also makes it hard for someone to leave a crappy job that they stay in "for the health insurance." Let insurance companies compete for your money and you'll see the price come down.

This is why we need to get rid of Obama. He is spending us into oblivion. We cannot afford another four years, and neither can our kids.
Logic - SM - Way off on several points
[ In Reply To ..]
Republicans have offered several solutions, passed several bills through the house (over 30) and Dems refuse to vote on them in the Senate. Want a list? Includes everything from debt reduction, tax reform, health reform, financing reform, balanced budget. Since most on this site refuse to read anything other than talking points of their Dem leaders, no way to know this since there seems to be no tolernace of the truth here...only demonizing of the opposing party. "I beg you, think through your assumptions", especially since they are way off the mark, not grounded in truth. BTW, your guy has not yet put in a budget in over 3 years, spent more than 5-trill in less than 3 years, knocked our global credit rating down (first time in decades), highest food stamp benefits in history, high unemployment, yeah...Obama has a plan...bankrupt the USA. Case you aren't aware, we are already declining and Obama just keeps pushing us downhill.
