President Obama to speak about Haiti earthquake today...Only took

What a shame.

What exactly are you insinuating by that statement? - emanon

I was monitoring internet news around the time the first reports of the quake started to appear. When those reports were less than 1 hour old, another report showed up about Obama's first response to the news. That would mean he probably burned the midnight oil last night putting together an emergency aid package and arranging for an official response and news conference to address concerns on behalf of the nation.

He was quicker on the draw than you were to post on the subject, a full 18 hours later. Tsk, Tsk. Shame on you!

I am no Obama fan, but seeing this news, - mtt22

all I can think of are the people of Haiti. They already have awful lives, with most living on 2 dollars a day in huts and a corrupt Govt... now this. To see a man walking down the street carrying a baby pulled from the rubble, alive or dead?...probably a scene like this on every block.. my heart goes out to them all.

I agree. This has to do with those people who - are suffering, not politics.

[ In Reply To ..]
Lets leave the bashing out of it, the plight of these people is much more important, IMHO.
You are absolutely right . . . . - emanon

Watching the news come in from there is so heartbreaking. Their hospitals have been destroyed, and most of the buildings have concrete roofs, and many of them have flattened like pancakes, making survival and recovery almost impossible. To top it off, the prisons have been destroyed as well, and now there are potentially dangerous criminals (heard report of as many as 4000) running the streets. Even with all the problems we have going on in this country, it should really make you thankful that we have so much when so many have nothing.
I agree 1000% - TXMT

That is why I posted a reply to the "3 days to respond to the underwear bomber" snipe. If my response was too snarky, I apologize, but it angered me to see someone trying to make political hay out of this horrible catastrophe. My remarks about Obama were made in an attempt to get the original poster to stop and think a moment about the fact that he, too, is a human being, capable of expessing sympathy and contributing concrete aid on behalf of all of us who are moved by this sad turn of events. The people of Haiti seem to be destined to be repeatedly subjected to the wrath of mother nature and our support of their plight should be swift and generous.
I for one totally knew what you meant. - Colleen

He is obviously concerned about this and is doing what he can, and I suspect will be doing more. What are we doing? What can we do? Don't have much money but has anyone heard anything about where we send blankets or clothes or something?

Where you live? I'm in Houston and we have emergency relief organizations in place for regional hurricane relief, which became fairly well organized and sophisticated after Allison, and even more so after Ike. Some of those agencies cross-over into international relief agencies when the occasion arises. With the help of local radio stations (for those of us lucky enough to have electricity in the aftermath) we organized lots of efforts to raise money, benefits, items collection events, and such to provide avenues for aid. I am very proud of the way our mayor and the rest of our community opened our doors to Katrina victims when their number was up and how responded to each others needs when our time came. We learned from experience that we did not have to stand by and feel helpless.

Depending on where you live, we may be able to come up with something similar. My first thought was that maybe the Red Cross or other outreach services in your area would be a first responder contact.
I am in Oregon, just outside Portland. - Colleen

That is a great idea. I will do some checking around. On this same thought, I just posted an email I got from the WH and BO that tells us where people can donate if they want:

Good Afternoon,

The reports and images from Haiti of collapsed hospitals, crumbled homes, and men and women carrying their injured neighbors through the streets are truly heart-wrenching. As we learn more about the extent of the devastation, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti and Haitian Americans around our country who do not yet know the fate of their families and loved ones back home.

I have directed my Administration to respond with a swift, coordinated and aggressive effort to save lives. The people of Haiti will have the full support of the United States Government in the urgent effort to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble and to deliver the humanitarian relief -- the food, water and medicine -- that Haitians will need in the coming days.

This is also a time when we are reminded of the common humanity that we all share, and Americans have always responded to these situations with generosity of spirit. If you would like to support the urgent humanitarian effort in Haiti, I encourage you to visit our website where you can learn more about how to contribute:

http://www.WhiteHouse.gov/HaitiEarthquake

Americans trying to locate family members in Haiti are encouraged to contact the State Department at (888) 407-4747.

We will continue to stand with the people of Haiti and keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

Obama..... - makes on wonder

[ In Reply To ..]
I get what you are saying. Obama does go into full mode ASAP when this tragedy hit Haiti, as this country should, in order to give immediate help to those poor folks. It is a horrific thing I cannot even imagine!

But it does make one wonder why OUR president didn't see a plane full of people nearly being blown to bits in the U.S. airspace important enough to require speaking urgently about this terrorist and what he was going to do with him..... which, of course, he didn't. He should have been just as urgent in his response to reassuring the U.S. people that he is doing everything to get to the bottom of the bomber and where he got his orders as he is in sending help to Haiti.

I get it.

took the man 3 days to make a public statement? Maybe he was investigating the incident, trying to get to the bottom of it before he went before the public? You don't honestly think that he just decided, "Hey, I think I'll just hang out at the beach a couple more days before . . ." Seriously, I have no doubt that he was on the ball as soon as he was informed, especially since it was concerning national and international security. Please, people, get real! Stop being so critical of the man, and let him do his job!

You're saying it would take him 3 days to know what - this guy did? In that case,

[ In Reply To ..]
we got some really lousy agencies out there. That man knew what happened from hour 1, and I can guarantee he was told within a day that this guy was on a watchlist. No, it shouldn't have taken him 3 days to speak up.

NO, I WILL NOT GIVE HIM A BREAK! That is his job. If he can do it so efficiently with Haiti, he should be doing it 10 times more efficiently with this country. His first responsibility is to this country. Now, I'm sure you will try to tell me how his FIRST priority isn't to this country either.
So, what do you think of shrub's response to the shoe bomber? - Do tell.
[ In Reply To ..]
Huh? I can't hear you.

What job? He hasn't done anything! - my opinion as a democrat!

[ In Reply To ..]
Let him do his job? That man is letting a terrorist be tried in civil court as if he has the rights of a U.S. citizen. Are you kidding me? He is a sellout. Ask yourself why he wouldn't want this guy under military rule so they can find out what they need to know about where this guy is getting his backup and whatever else info they can get..... you know, national security and all.
Shoe bomber was charged in a federal court. - You OK with that? sm

really the way it was supposed to when it was the big business. Sorry, maybe it is difficult to recognize after Bush but Obama is a man who considers everything and talks to all sides before he makes decisions, IMO. I will be continuing to support him.
