Obama told to quit smoking and curb his drinking

Posted: Mar 1, 2010

Now we know why those garbage bags coming out of the white house are opaque. Hides the empties better. So maybe healthcare should begin at home with a healthier lifestyle, eh, Bammie-baby? We ALL agree that that's the ONE sure way to lower healthcare costs. That's the whole idea behind the fat czar, the transfat czar, the sugar czar, the school-lunch czar, the wear-your-galoshes czar, the exercise czar, et al - isn't it? http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/mar/01/barack-obama-told-to-quit-smoking;

Perfect example of spin, thanks! - NJ

[ In Reply To ..]

Great example of leaving out a word here or there to spin something. Actually, "[t]he slightly elevated cholesterol levels, tendinitis in his left knee and occasional smoking were the only negatives noted."

Here's the part the OP put the spin-dizzy on:

"The doctor said Obama should...[c}ontinue smoking cessation efforts, a daily exercise program, a healthy diet, moderation in alcohol intake, periodic dental care, and remain up to date with recommended immunizations."

CONTINUE. As in already doing it. Heh. Sorry to tell the rabid right, but the drunk was your guy Bush.

Don't MOST doctors recommend moderation in alcohol intake? - deb

I agree, total spin put on this. Are you also going to say he doesn't exercise, eats too much junk food, has rotten teeth, and hasn't gotten his shots lately? Geez.

Protecting Our Children from the Dangers of Smoking
Posted by Jesse Lee on June 22, 2009 at 03:16 PM EST

The President expressed his appreciation for Senator Ted Kennedy above all today. Lamenting that the senator could not be there for the signing of Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, he called it "change that's been decades in the making." By all accounts, it is the strongest measure protecting children from the dangers of smoking to date – read the fact sheet for all of the details.
He recounted the all-too-familiar statistics: that more than 400,000 Americans now die of tobacco-related illnesses each year; that more than 8 million Americans suffer from at least one serious illness caused by smoking; and that almost 90% of all smokers began at or before their 18th birthday.
He spoke on his personal experience:
I know – I was one of these teenagers, and so I know how difficult it can be to break this habit when it's been with you for a long time. And I also know that kids today don't just start smoking for no reason. They're aggressively targeted as customers by the tobacco industry. They're exposed to a constant and insidious barrage of advertising where they live, where they learn, and where they play. Most insidiously, they are offered products with flavorings that mask the taste of tobacco and make it even more tempting.
We've known about this for decades, but despite the best efforts and good progress made by so many leaders and advocates with us today, the tobacco industry and its special interest lobbying have generally won the day up on the Hill. When Henry Waxman first brought tobacco CEOs before Congress in 1994, they famously denied that tobacco was deadly, nicotine was addictive, or that their companies marketed to children. And they spent millions upon millions in lobbying and advertising to fight back every attempt to expose these denials as lies.
Fifteen years later, their campaign has finally failed. Today, thanks to the work of Democrats and Republicans, health care and consumer advocates, the decades-long effort to protect our children from the harmful effects of tobacco has emerged victorious. Today, change has come to Washington.
This legislation will not ban all tobacco products, and it will allow adults to make their own choices. But it will also ban tobacco advertising within a thousand feet of schools and playgrounds. It will curb the ability of tobacco companies to market products to our children by using appealing flavors. It will force these companies to more clearly and publicly acknowledge the harmful and deadly effects of the products they sell. And it will allow the scientists at the FDA to take other common-sense steps to reduce the harmful effects of smoking.
This legislation is a victory for bipartisanship, and it was passed overwhelmingly in both Houses of Congress. It's a victory for health care reform, as it will reduce some of the billions we spend on tobacco-related health care costs in this country. It's a law that will reduce the number of American children who pick up a cigarette and become adult smokers. And most importantly, it is a law that will save American lives and make Americans healthier.
Making clear that this legislation does not represent the end of the road on fighting back the health risks of smoking, the President nonetheless described it as another very significant sign of change in Washington:
Despite the influence of the credit card industry, we passed a law to protect consumers from unfair rate hikes and abusive fees. Despite the influence of banks and lenders, we passed a law to protect homeowners from mortgage fraud. Despite the influence of the defense industry, we passed a law to protect taxpayers from waste and abuse in defense contracting. And today, despite decades of lobbying and advertising by the tobacco industry, we've passed a law to help protect the next generation of Americans from growing up with a deadly habit that so many of our generation have lived with.

As always, get more information on tobacco and your health from HHS and the FDA, including new widgets out today.

If the worst you can say about Obama is that he smokes, I'm a happy camper. If he didn't know it was bad, you'd be all over that. Perhaps everyone who smokes should be fired? Weak, weak, very weak.

Nonissue of the weak...erm week.

Oh, trust me - it's not the WORST we can say about Obama - and no one said it was

The worst we can say about Obama is that no one in the history of the nation had fewer qualifications to be President, or a more communist agenda.
Commies, oh...ok - NJ

He's a communist. Ok. Gotcha.

Just wondering, is that worse than being a socialist?

Routine recommendations from MD blown up into - big fat lie. What do you

[ In Reply To ..]
hope to accomplish here? That you can name-call on a 6th grade level? That you can march lock step and scatter buzz word slurs with the best of 'em?

Do you have any idea how ridiculous it is to try to politicize a medical check-up report? This is beyond absurd.

Oh you mean like what you did when SP was running - see message

and her medical report was scrutinized. Everyone wanted to know the exact details blow-by-blow of her health to include the birthing process of her handicapped son, and the public was screaming for blood when she didn't want the whole country to know whether she screamed while in labor or pushed to soon or too late. You mean like that?

I don't know what Obama's health report said and I don't care. He's living, he's breathing, he looks pretty healthy to me. So what if he smokes or drinks. I don't care. He is our President and will be until the next election. He is of sound mind and body. But to say how ridiculous it is to try to politicize a medical check-up report, when that is what you were doing with Sarah Palin is too pathetic.

Chill. I am curious. What big fat lie came out of - this incident? sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The health of prospective candidates is a legitimate concern to voters....up to a point. We would like to know if they can make it through at least 4 years before they drop dead. Yes? But there is a difference between a routine check up and voter information on the medical history of candidates running for the highest offices in govt.

I was attached at the hip to all media sources during the campaign but never heard a single report about this alleged attack on poor little Sarah. Now here's the kick. I agree with you. I could care less about her childbirth history and think that, if this indeed did happen, it was uncalled for.

But we digress from the point of the other post. Transforming a routine medical recommendation given to all patients into Obama is a drunk who hides his empty bottles in opaque trash bags is insane. In case you didn't hear me the first time, let me repeat. It is insane.

Anyway, the next time we agree on something, you think you could dial it back a notch or two?
Stepped out into the cold air - I'm now chilled ;o) - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry got so "hyped" in my last message. Thank you for responding in the way you did. Sounds like something my mom would say to me. Ha ha.

Anyway...health histories for candidates is of course important. Yes, we want to know if a person is going to be able to make it through their time. Delving into every minute detail about the birth of someone's child and screaming when they don't provide us with the intimate details in the labor and delivery room is another thing. I was attached to the TV too. I kept thinking why is it so important for these people to know what happened in the delivery room? I don't consider her "poor little Sarah". Ha ha. What they did to her during the campaign was bad, but like she said..."I'm a big girl, I can handle it". Now I wish she would just get her mug off the TV and go back home.

I most definitely agree with your statement of calling Obama a drunk, etc. That is totally uncalled for. I don't like his policies but there is no reason to call him a drunk, etc, etc.

So we do agree and I am sorry I blew your post out of proportion. I have taken my chill pill here and do apologize.
Thanks, but no need really. I think its just a - sign of the times....

Folks are tense, at least the ones we see posting on this board. I'm tense and maybe a bit defensive, being one of the unemployed who Senator Bunning decided to blow off for the sake of making a point. I understand his position and think paygo is a good idea, at least in theory. I also think he chose the wrong place and the wrong time to take a stand.

2000 DOT workers were laid off today as a direct result of his recalcitrance. My benefits run out in 4 weeks and I cannot get the feeling that any extension will be available when I need it to be there. I fully expect to be caught up in the waves he is making. Thankfully, I paid off my condo in the 2000, but at stake here is whether or not I will be able to feed myself, get the medications I need, keep the electricity running or gas up the guzzler so I can continue to look for a job.

I would speculate that you are tense because you believe that national leadership is not representing your best interests, much the same way dems felt over 8 years under the Bush administration. It was a terrible feeling and I would not wish this on anyone.

I believe the divisions we endured under Bush have deepened under Obama. While it is interesting that the source of our tension is the same (political leadership), and maybe we can even agree that the system is not working for either side, I have to wonder just how much responsibility for coming together to fix what ails us lays outside the beltway.

Whatever the case, I am happy I did not offend you and appreciate the apology.
I read about Bunning's comments - disgusting if you ask me - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
Tense is definitely a good word for how people feel. I am sorry you are unemployed. More than half my family is unemployed (out of 14 people 8 are unemployed (not including my cousin who was unemployed and just committed suicide). I fear for all of you and what will happen if they don't get this situation straightened out (fear for myself too as I am in a one income family so doing whatever I can to hang on). I read about Bunnings comments. What a disgusting display. All to make a point? Maybe he should be unemployed with nothing saved and have his benefits cut off and see how he feels. I'll have to read up more on his ideas of how the paygo thing you mentioned. Truth is I haven't had time to research it, just heard his comments.

I was very upset at the last administration and equally upset at this one for exactly the reason you mentioned. Nobody in congress whether it was then or now is representing the best interests of the country. They are doing things that affect us, but they show they don't care about what happens to us. Eight years was enough (well in all fairness the first two years were good, it's the last six that were not the best), but now to have that continue and in all honesty worse than what we went through in the last six years is a very terrible thing to go through.

That is a very good observation about how the divisions under Bush administration have deepened since the new administration. I think that is what the country is really feeling. I just fear that there is no way to fix what has been damaged. I do think everyone in congress should be fired and start fresh, and with people who understand economics and people who can contribute ideas that will get this country back on track. We need people who care about the people of the country who are outside of DC. The ones in there now do not understand nor do they care. Right now it's just another extension of the Bush administrations years. No difference.

I will always hope for the best, plan for the worst and just keep my fingers crossed. I'm anxious for the election this year and will be keeping an eye on the candidates and what their qualifications are and what ideas they have and what they can bring to Washington that will repair this country.
Personally, I would love to see every one of these - politicians, repub and dem

Maybe we would actually see some help-and Bunning could see his stupid ball game.
