Quitting Smoking

Posted: Feb 1, 2010

Looking for advice on quitting smoking. The new FSC taste terrible and are making me sick! I can't afford Chantix because I don't have insurance.  Has anyone tried nicotine patches or gum with success?  Any other suggestions would be most appreciated.  TIA!

I smoked for 15 years and - quit cold turkey.

It wasn't easy, but I did it. I was a little difficult to be around at first because I would be very irritable and snappy, but it got better everyday.

Now that they have banned smoking in all restaurants and bars, it is even easier because going out before and being in an environment where people were smoking made me want to do it very badly.

It's been a year now (WOW) and I rarely think about it anymore.

You don't necessarily need a drug to quit a drug - but...

From the health store:

For Mental symptoms:
Siberian Ginseng
Skullcap
Valerian

For Physical Symptoms:
Licorice
Lemon Balm
Honey

You can expect to have digestive problems as the lining in your stomach has been affected by nicotine. You can expect to have a sore throat as the blood vessels in your throat heal. You can expect to have some insomnia, night sweats and chills.

Physical withdrawal from nicotine will take about 45 days. You can expect to crave a cigarette indefinitely, at times of stress or illness, or when you smell someone smoking.

You can quit any drug if you are willing to bear the pain. If you are unwilling, there really is not any pharma drug that will substitute for a cigarette or prevent craving or pain.

Your body can heal itself. Exercise makes you feel better and quitting smoking improves your vision, sense of smell and taste. But wanting to be healthy was never a motivator for me. It was all about the money and I have not spent $70,000 on cigarettes since me and my husband quit.

Good Luck!

Go to the doctor and tell him you want a lung function test. When you get the results of this you will think twice before you light up again. I was told my lungs were 89 years old and I was only 37. I used a patch for a week and then just quit on my own. Good Luck!!

Quitting Smoking HelpDec 01, 2015
Let me start out by saying I am looking forward to saying I am a nonsmoker (and saving a lot of money), but I am having a hard time getting there.  I have been cutting down, but I seem to have reached a plateau.  I really do not want to take Chantix.  I have used a patch in the past, but I developed a rash from it.  Looking for tips from anyone who has been there.  Most of my friends are smokers so am not really expecting any support from them.  Sometimes this ...

Trying To Quit Smoking..Sep 09, 2011
I've been an active smoker for 15 years. I grew up in a smoker's household, so I don't know what it's like to live without cigarettes around. I've tried to quit a few times, but never could get past the three-day hump. I've realized though, that I smoke to self-medicate ADD and depression, so I think that will make a difference this time. Any one have any advice/suggestions? I don't want to go to the Dr. and get medications for the ADD/depression--to me, ...

Need To Quit Smoking - Help!!!Aug 30, 2010
Does anyone have any good techniques for quitting smoking?  I've tried the patch and the gum and they didn't work and the pills are too expensive.  I smoke the most while I'm working and need a break - too easy to get away from everything and step outside for a smoke.  I need some alternative ideas from anyone that has also gone through this.  I'm really ready to quit, but I'm lost as to how to do it.  I'm ready to listen and try any and al ...

that I people I know who can least afford it are the ones who smoke, yet tell me they can't afford Chantix or other means to help them quit?   It appears at least where I live that the people in the lower socioeconomic levels are the ones who are more likely to smoke.  Is it that way where you live?  Do you think it has anything to do with income level or educational level?  Just curious for different opinions.  ...
