'HUBRIS: SELLING THE IRAQ WAR'

Join Rachel Maddow for the step-by-step true story of how the American people were sold on the Iraq war. Premieres February 18th at 9pm E.T./ 6pm P.T. on MSNBC.

What about us patriotic protestors who tried to tell this story in 2002!!?? - Fairminded

Of course we were slammed as UNpatriotric and SADDAM-LOVERS by the ignorant, but even those who sort of knew better did not rally to support us in numbers that MIGHT have made a difference.

I am going to watch and think "I told you so." - sm

I came to think of it as the "drumbeat of war." There was no stopping it, and a good portion of the U.S. seemed to be in a trance.

Then I watched in horror when Bush was re-elected by saying "stay the course" and Kerry was Swiftboated.

Actually, I believe the Nobel prize that President Obama won was actually a sigh of relief from the world community.

Oxymoron - Maddow and Truth

That's a laugh.

How so? - (NM)

I was never "sold," and I wasn't against it knee-jerk, - either. I waited for the explanation

[ In Reply To ..]
of why we needed to go there but never got a credible one--just instructions from the President not to worry about it but just go shopping.

I listened to the stream of top retired generals, ex-presidents, ex-ambassadors, ex- heads of intelligence agencies, scientists, etc., etc., etc. come forward to explain, on TV and radio and in print media, from every possible perspective why there was no reason to invade Iraq and many reasons not to.

My question is, with the information needed so readily available, how on earth could people deceive THEMSELVES into supporting this invasion?

President Bush even went on TV and 3 times in as many days that I heard called it a "crusade." Literally stopped me cold the first time I heard it as I walked across the living room. But then he stopped THAT; apparently the feedback wasn't good.

As we know, the feedback wasn't nearly negative enough, though. This was a failure of citizenship even more than leadership.

But we can't afford to wait for an explanation from a goverment who lies about the reasons for - Fairminded

Unfortunately the media worked hand in glove with the Bush regime to lie us into that fake war, but it IS on us - if we don't active protest (after doing our own due dilligence aka research)...

the American public has been sadly and systematically trained not to rock the boat. It could be our undoing.

The day of the announcement, Bush didn't actually - say WHY. I listened carefully and ended up

wondering if there was something he felt he couldn't explain right them (yeah, I know, but it really can happen). His ending by telling us not to bother ourselves about it, that he'd take care of it and we should just go shopping was not encouraging. But my mind was open and I reserved opinion because a necessary war could start during any party's administration.

Look at that excellent one his dad presided over. Over 100 nations officially, and most of the others unofficially, supported and took part in the First Gulf War--to keep the peace.
Sorry but you've been misinformed :) - Fairminded

The first Bush War was not an "excellent" war - it too was trumped up - do a little research :) you'll see.

Just because "more" nations supported this effort that in and of itself does not mark a military effort as 'worthy' or 'just'.

and the LAST thing Bush War 1 was for was to "keep the peace."
Of course it benefited us, and 150 other nations, - but--as wars go--

Well, "excellent" was probably the wrong word to describe any war. :)

It was an excellent way, relatively speaking, to meet this potentially planet-destabilizing event. Until we all cut free from Mideast oil, threats of serious disruptions are threats of planetary disaster. Here in this country, a global economic crash that'd make 2008 look like a blip on a graph might not result in much actual starvation, but the same cannot be said for many other areas.

Trying To Quit Smoking..Sep 09, 2011
I've been an active smoker for 15 years. I grew up in a smoker's household, so I don't know what it's like to live without cigarettes around. I've tried to quit a few times, but never could get past the three-day hump. I've realized though, that I smoke to self-medicate ADD and depression, so I think that will make a difference this time. Any one have any advice/suggestions? I don't want to go to the Dr. and get medications for the ADD/depression--to me, ...

Does anyone have any good techniques for quitting smoking?  I've tried the patch and the gum and they didn't work and the pills are too expensive.  I smoke the most while I'm working and need a break - too easy to get away from everything and step outside for a smoke.  I need some alternative ideas from anyone that has also gone through this.  I'm really ready to quit, but I'm lost as to how to do it.  I'm ready to listen and try any and al ...

that I people I know who can least afford it are the ones who smoke, yet tell me they can't afford Chantix or other means to help them quit?   It appears at least where I live that the people in the lower socioeconomic levels are the ones who are more likely to smoke.  Is it that way where you live?  Do you think it has anything to do with income level or educational level?  Just curious for different opinions.  ...

Quitting Smoking HelpDec 01, 2015
Let me start out by saying I am looking forward to saying I am a nonsmoker (and saving a lot of money), but I am having a hard time getting there.  I have been cutting down, but I seem to have reached a plateau.  I really do not want to take Chantix.  I have used a patch in the past, but I developed a rash from it.  Looking for tips from anyone who has been there.  Most of my friends are smokers so am not really expecting any support from them.  Sometimes this ...
