I also have been in the MT industry for 13 years and have recently decided to go back to school. I am doing an informative speech on Voice Recognition and the impacts it has had on the medical transcriptionist community. If you have anything else to offer, I greatly appreciate any advice or information you can pass my way!

EMR's - Help!
[ In Reply To ..]Don't know about VR but the new requirements with the health care reform apparently are causing docs to buy EMR's which they are now typing their OWN reports into and do not need transcriptionists anymore. Five people including myself have lost or are in the process of losing our jobs.
VR cuts our pay in half - at LEAST! MTSOs *claim* - its "faster and easier". They LIE! -/SM/
[ In Reply To ..]They put even the worst dictators on it. So we're still doing almost as much typing as before. Sometimes, I just have to throw my hands up in the air, erase what VR wrote, and re-transcribe the entire report. For HALF the pay.
It ISN'T faster. It's also not as easy to hear mistakes, because in certain instances (usually when the wrong medical word has been typed by VR), we tend to hear what we're seeing in front of us, rather than what the doctor actually said.
