New Yorkers dumpster diving for food. Where's Obama?

Know what I really don't understand? - backwards typist

I just don't understand why people constantly ignore warnings like this. They see the size of the storm. They know what happened in N.O. and other parts of the country.

Is the attitude "It'll never happen to me" getting dangerous? I think so. Maybe a few arrests over mandated evacuations needs to be done, which is cruel, but something has to happen other than having the military forcibly remove them by hitting them over the head and carrying them out.

That's easy. Just ignore the science and - it'll disappear. nm

Laws are in place and some ARE arrested, but WHAT is freedom if - it can't be exercised? People are forced

[ In Reply To ..]
out in some areas and not in others where they seem to have a fairly decent chance. Their choice.

Law enforcement usually has a pretty good idea what areas of town are particularly vulnerable--until NEW info happens, of course, and I suspect these things are called fairly right more often than not. That said, I've had friends forcibly evacuated--twice--who were never really believed by anyone to be in danger. They just had a very hard-nosed official who swept the area. The people later voted him out, and this was probably one of the reasons. Our friends definitely wanted him gone. Hotels were expensive and a lousy substitute for home.

BTW, no guess here why some people don't stock up either. I love cozying up with a blizzard outside and knowing we have plenty of food, books, wood for the furnace, as well as our cranky old generator if we must.

It's not really freedom if you lose your life. - backwards typist

and that's really what my post was about.

Some officials will always let power go to their head and voting them out is the right thing to do. You can't get away from those types. That's just part of being free.

NY Harbor just reopened to barges, so supplies - can be brought in again. nm

Where's Romney's Walmart bus? Has anyone seen it - since the photo op?

[ In Reply To ..]
I guess the candidate passed Disaster Relief 101. Now he's calling for cash donations to the Red Cross this morning after flunking his first test. Quick study, that Romney. Whatta guy. Meanwhile, Janet Napolitano is due to land at La Guardia this morning en route to Staten Island, so real help is on the way.

Do buses (or whatever is delivering the supplies)fly? - backwards typist

[ In Reply To ..]
If so, wow. New info I didn't know, but last time I looked, they still had to drive on roads.

Because of DOT laws, they can only drive 8-10 hours or 500 miles a day. How many miles was it from loading the supplies to NYC? That's what you have to figure.

You also have to take in consideration if any interstate roads are closed in PA or NY that they planned to take.

It's not just a matter of minutes to get there.

DOT laws prevent ONE driver from exceeding those guidelines. - Straight shot to NYC

[ In Reply To ..]
is perfectly permissible when the bus carries a back-up buddy driver. It's done all the time. In fact, my husband uses contract buddies for his long hauls. The rig is equipped with this neat feature called a sleeper where one can catch 40 winks while the other drives. They just keep the log book current and it's smooth sailing from there.

Guess you or they they didn't take that into consideration, but that's OK. We know this disaster relief stuff is a new challenge for Team Romney. Everyone makes mistakes. At least they got the non-perishables part right, so they won't be delivering food poisoning to the victims along with their good intentions.

Oh, BTW, Backwards Typist. Assuming they know how to use Google maps, Romney's handlers should know that the distance between Dayton and Staten Island is 605 miles. To Hoboken? 609. They loaded that stuff 3 DAYS AGO, so this begs the question. Has anyone either seen or heard anything about that bus since the photo-op? Where is it? How many stump stops is it making between Dayton and the coast?
No kidding. My hubby was an OTR buddy system - backwards typist
[ In Reply To ..]
for his company way back when for a short time and yes, I did forget about the buddy system.

Did they have one or just a single driver? I thought they loaded that stuff only yesterday, so I apologize, but you made a point about stopping and did they stop to pick up other supplies? What is the amount of hours they have to stop now for chow time?

You still have to take into consideration that some roads are closed. Google maps may not be correct (my son has trouble with GM a lot) or up-to-date. I read where there are still some roads closed in PA.
3 days. 600 miles. - Do the math.
[ In Reply To ..]
It's odd they just fell off the radar screen once the photo-op flopped in the media, once they busted the Wal-Mart spree, dontcha think? You'd think they'd have enough savvy to anticipate the need for 2 drivers. Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows? It's not like they're getting any milagage out of their disgraceful ploy in terms of scoring votes, and their aversion to ANY real contact with the media is palpable, so like everything else this campaign has dished out, in the absence of specifics, we are left to speculate.
Okay, I'm cutting Romney campaign a break. They have a - presidency to win--if they can. A dem

New Yorkers Who Don't Vote Should Pay $10 Fine. Mar 19, 2017
legislation this week that would establish “compulsory voting” in the state and punish those who don’t vote with a $10 fine. On the face of it, it looks a lot like Australia’s compulsory voting law. Wait a minute. I thought people can’t afford to get an identification form, like a license, to prove they are eligible to vote. So how the heck can they afford a fine. She hates the poor! Cat With Possible Food Allergies?Apr 24, 2013
Does anyone have a cat with food allergies?  My white/tabby mix seems to always be itching but does not have fleas.  His white ears are frequently pink and warm and he scratches quite a bit.  Last night I noticed him licking his belly and it, too, was quite pink. We have been round and round with this kitty since we inherited him from my MIL.  He was always a puker and I have improved that condition with different food and hairball treats, but I'm wondering if the pukin ...

I don't know how many people follow the recalls but I need to warn you about another dog food that's NOT on recall. . . Beneful dog food...  Sadly, our baby had ALL of these symptoms, not in order, not daily, and not all of them, so her symptoms weren't recognized. School Food ProgramJan 25, 2012
Listening to Rush this a.m.  He was saying Michele Obama should abandon her attempts at improving nutrition in the schools.  He said children refuse to eat the tofu that Michele wants them to eat.  What is the point of warping this discussion beyond recognition?  I visited my nephew's school and I was appalled at the school lunch. Chicken nuggets and pizza, etc.  I have never heard Michelle talk about replacing this junk with tofu.  Why not just go ba ...

Well, the very next day, DH went to get Blue Buffalo and instead came home with a 5 lb. bag of 4health ($6) and Taste of the Wild  ($12) instead (he always listens to sales people). We started her on 4health and she didn't touch it the first day unless we put in 1/2 can of wet and veggies. The second day she ate it with no problem. She also seems to be 'full' after eating and isn't crying or whining. The next day, she didn't even touch her breakfast until after lun ...

“The lessons of history … show conclusively that continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual and moral disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit.” These searing words about Depression-era welfare are from Franklin Roosevelt’s 1935 State of the Union Address. FDR feared this self-reliant people might come to depend permanently upon government ...

About Picking Up Restautant Food And TipMay 10, 2010
We were talking at my office about picking up restautant food, and whether or not a tip is justified. Example, if you call in an order to a restaurant like Claim Jumper (citing an example a co-worker used) and you swing by to pick it up on the way home, would you tip? Technically, you're not in the restaurant and getting service. Typically, a tip is given due to the service provided by the waitstaff. I said maybe one would be justified if you stayed parked and they brought it to you. I usua ...

Food For Thought..I Found This To Be A Jun 25, 2012
very interesting insight... When I was a child growing up in the late 1940s and early 1950s one of my favorite radio programs was the continuing saga of The Lone Ranger. I would huddle next to the radio every night to follow the adventures of the Lone Ranger and his faithful companion, Tonto. Unfortunately, the program aired just about my bed time and, as often as not, my parents would insist that I miss part of the program and keep to the schedule they'd deemed appropriate. One nigh ...
