Most support temporary "ban" on newcomers from

Posted: Feb 1, 2017

Most voters approve of President Trump’s temporary halt to refugees and visitors from several Middle Eastern and African countries until the government can do a better job of keeping out individuals who are terrorist threats. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 57% of Likely U.S. Voters favor a temporary ban on refugees from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen until the federal government approves its ability to screen out potential terrorists from coming here. Thirty-three percent (33%) are opposed, while 10% are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.) Similarly, 56% favor a temporary block on visas prohibiting residents of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen from entering the United States until the government approves its ability to screen for likely terrorists. Thirty-two percent (32%) oppose this temporary ban, and 11% are undecided. This survey was taken late last week prior to the weekend protests against Trump’s executive orders imposing a four-month ban on all refugees and a temporary visa ban on visitors from these seven countries. These findings have changed little from August when 59% of voters agreed with Trump’s call for a temporary ban on immigration into the United States from "the most dangerous and volatile regions of the world that have a history of exporting terrorism” until the federal government improves its ability to screen out potential terrorists. (Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook. The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on January 25-26, 2017 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology. Only 16% of Americans think this country can ever be made completely safe from terrorist attacks in general, although 52% of voters say the federal government does not focus enough on the threat of domestic Islamic terrorism. The refugee ban is supported by 82% of Republicans and 59% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Democrats are opposed by a 53% to 34% margin. The numbers are nearly identical for the temporary ban on visas from these seven terrorist-plagued nations. Men and women are in general agreement on both measures. Younger voters are slightly less supportive than their elders are. Blacks oppose both bans more than whites and other majority voters do. Among voters who Strongly Approve of the job Trump is doing, over 70% support both bans. Similar numbers of those who Strongly Disapprove of his job performance are opposed. Most voters opposed former President Obama’s plan to bring tens of thousands of Middle Eastern and African refugees here this year. Sixty-two percent (62%) said Obama’s plan posed an increased national security risk to the United States. Obama and Hillary Clinton wouldn’t say it for fear of offending Muslims worldwide, but most voters continue to believe the United States is at war with radical Islamic terrorism. Trump declared war on radical Islamic terrorists in his inaugural speech. During the campaign, voters felt Trump would do a better job than Clinton protecting them from terrorists. Just 32% think the United States is safer now after eight years of the Obama presidency. In late December, 34% of voters said the United States will be safer from domestic terror attacks five years from now. Twenty-seven percent (27%) believe it will be less safe, while 32% expect the level of danger to be about the same. Last January, 72% of voters said the federal government is not aggressive enough in finding those who have overstayed their visas and sending them home. Sixty-eight percent (68%) considered those who overstay their visas in this country to be a serious national security risk. ;

Most do not listen to the other side - Resist Trump

so they are not aware of the very valid arguments as to why this policy does not make us safer as well as the chaotic and incompetent way it was implemented.

Go ahead and give us the valid reasons then - sm

Instead of saying "most" don't listen, state these reasons here so we are all enlightened. In other words, give us a chance to listen instead of assuming that we won't.

Valid reasons have been pointed out - on here and on news sites

They have been called false claims by the right. As pointed out by the right so many times, Google is your friend. By the way, Google doesn't support the ban either
First off... - sm

I don't fall right or left, I am square in the middle. I have never once said "Google is your friend," nor do I believe that to be true. I personally do support the TEMPORARY ban, just to give the "powers that be" room to breathe and come up with a better solution that will allow us to help those in need and protect the US citizens at the same time, not an easy task I would imagine. That said, I do feel that it could have been done maybe in a more step-wise fashion to allow those individuals affected by this time to regroup. I can't even imagine being in their shoes. To clarify what I mean by step-wise - I mean fair warning that such and such is going to happen at midnight or whenever on a certain day. I do not mean over months or even weeks, I mean steps taken over a day or two.
Then I guess my post wasnt' referring - to you

False equivalence. The immigration issue is about law and law - is about defining the lines you

What Obama did was illegal, not Trump. It is an injustice to MY children. The democrats seem to care more about unvetted immigrants than our own kids.
And yet claims in many posts suggest he is - only doing what Obama did
[ In Reply To ..]
So which is it? There was already high vetting going on under Obama by the way.
No there was NOT vetting under Obama. That's the point. - Thank God Trump takes national security
[ In Reply To ..]
seriously.

Many of the immigrants coming here are aligned with terrorists. Don't you want to weed them out?
There has been extreme vetting of refugees for more than five years. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The process takes 18-30 months. Where did you get the idea that there has been no vetting under Obama?

Seriously, just read... - jmt
[ In Reply To ..]
and I mean this is just one snippet out of many when you search Obama ban vs Trump ban. Of course I'm reading actual news like USA Today, CNN, etc. and not Trump News R Us. They all sum it up like so...

"The Obama administration’s actions were limited to one country and in response to a specific threat — the potential for other Iraqi refugees to take advantage of a flaw in the screening process.

By contrast, Trump ordered a far wider ban — albeit also temporary — without identifying a specific threat.

The order caused confusion at the nation’s airports over the weekend as refugees, legal visa holders and visitors affected by the new policy were detained and some even sent back to their home countries. Democrats and some Republicans criticized the Republican president for overreaching his authority and jeopardizing Muslim relations in the fight against terrorism."

But I don't expect the fanatical rights to EVER accept news not in their favor. All you need to search is differences between Obama ban and Trump ban and there you go. There are differences, but again this isn't Trump News Network, so it will be dismissed as is the norm around here.
It the countries Obama picked and warned about, but - did not VET!

He could not give a specific date (like BO did in Afghanistan) - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
What if President Trump said something like we're going to implement such and such on xyz date. THAT gives the terrorists fair warning. What he did was awkward, but acceptable in my view. Take the terrorists by surprise. Only 109 airline passengers were affected. How many innocent would-be passengers were affected by the ignorant and uninformed protestors?

I see your point and appreciate you pointing out the flaw in my thinking. I am not being a smarta$$. I truly do appreciate your post and do feel, on reflection, that my thinking is a bit flawed, at least regarding going in steps to accomplish the ban rather than "Bam, it's done." I do get that the element of surprise is a valuable tool.

Briefly, it is considered a war against Islam regardless of what Trump says and provides the best recruiting tool ISIS could ask for. It punishes individuals who have worked for the US in Iraq and other countries and discourages others for helping us in the future. It omitted some very dangerous countries, oddly - those where Trump has business interests. It was implemented so amateurishly it left women with young children hanging in limbo. Please do read some of the articles. Everyone fears terrorists and wants to be safe; the argument is over how to do it. People in the State Dept. are knowledgeable career professionals who have worked in both Democratic and Republican administrations. Trump should at least listen to them rather than telling them to get with the program or get out.

Republican Stand on Trump's Travel Ban. It contains numerous pros and cons about this executive order and how poorly it was executed, and it is the Pubs who are speaking, people in the government in the know who understand how this country's actions affect us, our allies, and the rest of the world If your senator or representative was against the ban, then you should probably contact them and give them a piece of your mind. If your senator or representative was for the ban, listen carefully to their reasons why. That may help more than posting here, which is NOT the best way to be engaged in the political process.
