MSNBC needs to be demolished. Now they are (sm)

saying the ambassador in Libya was responsible for his own death.  How can anyone actually WATCH this trash?  People truly are ignorant.

;

They are just a propaganda station - annieb - sm

They don't report the news, they are there for the purpose of spreading lies and hate. If this administration (or any democrat President) does something wrong, their job is to twist it around to make it look like it's somebody else's fault. I wish people would just stop watching it because it fries their brain cells. People who tune in are pretty much on the lower end of the education pole and need this type of brainwashing so they don't have to think for themselves.

I don't watch it because of that. If that is what they said, whoever said that needs to be fired.

Very frustrating, as some voters (even some here) (sm) - LM

actually watch it and think it's real news they are getting. I would think most MTs are pretty smart and wouldn't fall into that. Guess not. Live and learn, I suppose.

BAD news for both Fox and MSNBC viewers. Results of survey inside - with the questions to try yourself. :) SM
[ In Reply To ..]
(Confession: I didn't do nearly as well as I imagined I would. Not posting my score.)

Survey: NPR's listeners best-informed, Fox viewers worst-informed

Fairleigh Dickinson University's Public Mind poll of 1185 found the following. (The questions they asked are at the bottom so we can test ourselves.)

People who watch no news at all can answer more questions about international current events than people who watch cable news, a survey by Fairleigh Dickinson Universitys PublicMind finds.

NPR and Sunday morning political talk shows are the most informative news outlets, while exposure to partisan sources, such as Fox News and MSNBC, has a negative impact on people's current events knowledge.

People who watch MSNBC and CNN exclusively can answer more questions about domestic events than people who watch no news at all. People who only watch Fox did much worse. NPR listeners answered more questions correctly than people in any other category.

The survey of 1185 random people conducted by landline and cell phone in early February follows a similar poll FDU conducted last November, which surveyed only New Jersey residents and returned similar results.

Each respondent was asked four of eight questions, which are at the bottom of this post. On average, people were able to answer correctly 1.8 of 4 questions about international news, and 1.6 of 5 questions about domestic affairs, the report says. Here's the breakdown by viewing habits.

The report explains:

The largest effect is that of Fox News: all else being equal, someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer just 1.04 domestic questions correctly, a figure which is significantly worse than if they had reported watching no media at all. On the other hand, if they listened only to NPR, they would be expected to answer 1.51 questions correctly; viewers of Sunday morning talk shows fare similarly well. And people watching only The Daily Show with Jon Stewart could answer about 1.42 questions correctly.
Interestingly, the results of the poll controlled for partisanship. MSNBC, Fox and talk radio consumers answered more questions correctly when their political views aligned with those of the outlets they preferred. Moderates and liberals who watched only Fox did worse than conservatives who watched it. This mirrored the results at MSNBC, where a conservative viewer could be expected to answer an average of .71 international questions correctly, for example, and a liberal viewer could be expected to answer 1.89 questions correctly. None of the other news media had effects that depended on ideology, says the report.

On average, people were able to answer correctly 1.8 of 4 questions about international news, and 1.6 of 5 questions about domestic affairs, but depending on the match between ideology and viewing habits, the score could be lower or higher.

News organizations's tone and allocation of resources also apparently affected respondents' abilities to answer questions. NPR has as many domestic bureaus as foreign ones; its listeners did best on questions about international events. Daily Show viewers were next. On domestic questions, people who watched Sunday news shows did nearly as well as NPR listeners.

Questions: (all but the first two were open-ended)
To the best of your knowledge, have the opposition groups protesting in Egypt been successful in removing Hosni Mubarak?
How about the opposition groups in Syria? Have they been successful in removing Bashar al-Assad?
Some countries in Europe are deeply in debt, and have had to be bailed out by other countries. To the best of your knowledge, which country has had to spend the most money to bail out European countries?
There have been increasing talks about economic sanctions against Iran. What are these sanctions supposed to do?
Which party has the most seats in the House of Representatives right now?
In December, House Republicans agreed to a short-term extension of a payroll tax cut, but only if President Obama agreed to do what?
It took a long time to get the final results of the Iowa caucuses for Republican candidates. In the end, who was declared the winner?
How about the New Hampshire Primary? Which Republican won that race?
According to official figures, about what percentage of Americans are currently unemployed?

I remember when one watched the news, that's what they got. We didn't get the spin of one side or another. And Fox News does exactly the same thing which is why I don't watch Fox or MSNBC.

Not exactly the same. Both focus fairly honest attenion - on things the other does not. BUT, Fox

extensively twists and misrepresents whatever of that information is needed to fit the story it wants believed and makes up whatever else is needed.

MSNBC does that too, but to a much, much lesser degree. No expert ever argued that MSNBC's news medium tax status should be revoked. Everyone knows Fox's should be.

Like the phone survey results I posted above, TV/cable news viewers don't fare well. If we're not getting our news by reading quality material, we're not getting it. Except NPR listeners--they're also among the better educated and better informed, though toward the bottom of those groups.

Why should I want to read the NY Times or New Yorker - backwards typist
[ In Reply To ..]
or any other magazine or newspaper that is focused only in the NY area? I doubt people in WY want to read those items either. LOL

As for being knowledgeable about current events, I took a poll and a quiz the other day and had a 10:10 questions right. So, I don't consider myself in the dark on current events, and neither do most people on this board.

Hubby and I watched Jon Stewart last night for the first, and last, time. All he did was yell. I watched Colbert once, too. Thought he was a bit better but not someone I'd watch every day.

Two years ago, we used to watch O'Reilly and Hannity every night, but no more. Now I watch Meghan Kelley at times, Shep Smith, Neil Cavuto (because of the news and business end of the story), The Five (love Dana Perino and Bob Beckel), and we both like Bret Bauer, but most of the time, our programming is set on CSpan (during the day), The History Channel, Biography, NatGeo, and the like.

Sorry, didn't mean to get into personal preferences, but I also think that research is a wee bit lopsided. Did I miss how many people were surveyed? When was this survey taken? Never mind...I'll have to go back and look again.

Why is Fox so low when they were #1 in viewership 2(?) weeks ago.
#1 in viewership does not = accurate. - RC

I watch it (well, as much as I "watch" anything; I'm usually fooling around on the computer while it's on) and you can't help but be aware of the bias; they're almost comically open about it.

Of course we take what MSNBC says with large grains of salt, but it serves as a jumping-off point for our own research, and they're often on point. They exaggerate, like I said, to an almost comical degree, but they don't typically make stuff up out of whole cloth, unlike some other stations I could name *cough*fox*cough*

I feel the same way about *cough*MSNBC*cough* - backwards typist

[ In Reply To ..]
I've tried watching MSNBC and researching from their subjects but Fox has always had the "jump" on MSNBC where news stories are concerned. Fox is usually first with breaking stories and first with new news stories. They don't make these stories up.

In fact, I can go to MSNBC a little later and find the same story; that is, providing it's not Madcow, Matthews, Sharpton, or Schultz.
