Democratsâ talking points: We canât pass legislation anymore, despite majority

Democrats have conceded they can no longer pass healthcare on their own, ensuring that their key legislative reform either dies or accepts further compromises to gain approval from Republican members.

What's more, they've decided to outline their case to the public through a set of talking points issued to Democrats after Tuesday's election upset in Massachusetts.

Their meme? "It is mathematically impossible for Democrats to pass legislation on our own."

The approach was endorsed despite the fact that Democrats hold a sizable majority in both the House and Senate. The Senate majority is considerably larger than the majority Republicans held over Democrats for much of President George W. Bush's second term (2005-2007), when Republicans had 55 Senate seats.

The following talking points, issued to Senate Democratic press secretaries, were acquired by Talking Points Memo's Brian Beutler.

As if they never did anything wrong, never obstructed anything. I would say that they had quite a bit to do with obstruction when not allowing pubs to join in on important issues.

It's like children at play. Dems: "You can't play with us." Pubs:"Okay, fine. We'll fix ya."

...and Pelosi stating they are going to get it done one way or another.

At least O had some sense when he stated health care is on the backburner until Senator Brown gets to Washington. Finally showed some guts.

Halo free zone - This is serious business

The talking points title addresses the distinction between obstruction and governance from a position of strength. The points define the country's most pressing needs and take aim at breaking the Congressional gridlock that Americans from all parties find so frustrating by examining its elements and identifying its source. They challenge GOP senators to commit to removing roadblocks and solving problems, and to become honest brokers in pushing legislation forward, an obligation they are expected to live up to by those who gave them their jobs.

They call upon the GOP to acknowledge past mistakes, accept responsibility and take action to correct the problems from the previous administration. In other words, this is their chance to distance themselves from the baggage and redefine the Party of No in more favorable terms. They point out that the GOP has every bit as much to lose from failing to create jobs, stabilize the economy and produce real health care reform as do the democrats.

Should things stagnate for 3 more years, voters will be a lot MORE angry than they are now, will be looking at who tried and who did not and will act accordingly. Misjudging voters' ability to identify hypocrisy relative to who was versus is doing the deficit spending can prove deadly when election time comes around as we have already seen.

There are plenty of lessons to be learned from the past on both sides of this equation and republicans are warned that in this economic environment, the electorate will not take kindly to those who would continue to favor Wall Street, wealth and greed over Main Street, Middle America and need. Starting an administration with a huge deficit in contrast to one with a healthy surplus is a distinct disadvantage and one that will not be pushed and bullied out of the American collective dialog or conscience. Specific examples put forward in the talking points describe in no uncertain terms the hypocrisy and citizens will be retrospective beyond finger-pointing and blame gaming when looking at who benefited more as a result. That legacy of no real plan will be impossible to overcome as well if they do not change their real-time direction.

Take a grown-up pill, quit the witchin' and moaning, roll the proverbial sleeves up and get to work. Not too much to expect from either side.

Oh, there you go. Look, Obama's policies have so far - destroyed what was left of the economy,

[ In Reply To ..]
You cant blame that on the "previous" administration. Anyone with common sense knows what Obama is doing so far is adding to our debt without creating jobs. He is also so weak and ignorant on National Security. His inexperience shows more and more every day. He is a president of slogans, not REAL hope or change. You cant blame THAT on anyone else. The Mass. election shows what the majority of Americans are feeling. They want this endless spending to stop and are scared to death of the insane health care reform being shoved down their throats. You cant hear them screaming.. ENOUGH ALREADY???

You stated: "They challenge GOP senators to commit to removing roadblocks and solving problems, and to become honest brokers in pushing legislation forward, an obligation they are expected to live up to by those who gave them their jobs."

Have you read the health care reform bills? Have you seen all the amendments the pubs put up for adoption into this reform? There were plenty of them. They were all shot down by the party of 'me.' Some were good amendments but they were shot down because it would have put the brakes on insurance companies.

As for your statement of: "the GOP has every bit as much to lose from failing to create jobs, stabilize the economy and produce real health care reform as do the democrats."

What jobs have the dems created? I haven't seen any true, lasting jobs created. I've seen plenty of temporary jobs fixing some roads, making public and government buildings more 'green.' So far, all temporary jobs unless you want to include the bailouts for the auto companies and Wall Street.

Tell me how the GOP could create jobs or stabilize the economy when they are not the majority?

The problem is not just pubs, it's dems too. It's the old-fashioned power going to their heads and thinking they can do anything they want without bothering to understand what we, the citizens, want. Dems did not hear us at all. I sent plenty of letters and emails and not one reply. That's your government in action today. Too-big-to-fail banks can be interchanged to too-big-to-fail parties. Not.

It wasn't necessary to make the snide remark about taking a grown up pill, either. Snide remakr back to ya: You sound like a politician. Now roll up your sleeves and get to work and quit YOUR witchin' and moaning.

of Democrat talking points. I did not entitle nor did I write the article. Rather, I tried my best to read and review it from the perspective of the article and synopsize it as kindly as possible and keep my editorializing to a minimum, which I do not feel necessarily inclined to do all the time.

Have you every tried researching the 160 amendments republicans presented that were either accepted or passed? I have, but I gave up after about 30 minutes of sifting through articles about obstruction, obstruction, obstruction and more obstruction. Yes, they filed more than 788 amendments, which in an of itself was an obstrution tactic and a set up for the whining we now hear about how the process was not inclusive. Bah-loney. How about the ploy of reading the bill in its entirity on the Senate floor. Productive or obstructive? Honest or disingenuous? If you want to be more specific about the amendments the party of us "shot down," I would be more than happy to discuss the pros and cons point by point.

Parts of your response pretty much exemplify what the democratic talking points were trying to address, that being the need to move beyond the current GOP strategies and maneuvers to more productive dialog oriented around problem solving. Jobs creation would be a good place to start, not by attacking Obama (or more appropriately, Congress) on lack of progress there. That is a whole other discussion outside the context of this article, but to answer your question, the GOP can create jobs by working WITH the majority, not against them. Nothing will be produced in the vacuum of 59-41 without cooperation. Thus the need to recalibrate on both sides of the aisle.

I never said the problem is only the GOP. If the article implied that, it is because of its perspective of DEMOCRATIC talking points. I would be more interested in reading about republican talking points than exercising this issue any further.

BWT, when you take things out of context, you distort meaning. My snide parting shot was directed at both parties. That is what I meant when I said it was not too much to expect from EITHER side. You are the one who personalized it and turned a misconstrued version of it back on me. At first I thought the halo thing was a bit lofty, but I tried to brush it aside with a little humor.

Fact is that the process has bent over backwards to accommodate republicans but finally reached a point where it would be sheer foll to continue along that path. GOPers earned their exclusion with their

Though we live on different sides of the political universe, your posts are ones I feel I can address with civility and respect because that is what you extend much more often than not. You are entitled to a little partisan fervor in the aftermath of a significant election victory and in the midst of what has turned out to be a pretty good week for conservatives.
