Karen Hughes: Bush rescued the economy

George W. Bush rescued the economy from collapse, according to Karen Hughes. Bush's former campaign director attacked President Barack Obama on NBC Sunday, defending the record of her former boss on the economy.

Speaking about Obama's successes, journalist Mark Halperin praised the current president's handling of the economy. "He's done, I think, an extraordinary job running the government under difficult circumstances. He managed the economic crisis, kept the world from going into depression," said Halperin.

But Hughes quickly took objection to Halperin's assessment. "I have to disagree with you, Mark, about rescuing the economy," she said. "I think that happened before President Bush left office when they took the action that they did on TARP and the banks have now repaid much of that money but that's what stabilized the economy and prevented the collapse of the financial system."

Hughes proudly carried the torch for the forgetful right-wing Sunday. "2009 was the year of the greatest anxiety I've ever seen among the American people," she claimed.

"People were worried, they felt they were at the whim of these big forces beyond their control," she pointed out.

So, here we have Wâs former campaign manager trying to credit Bush with TARP, which has probably received more bashes from her partyâs loyalists and its fringe (with the possible exception of health care reform) than any other piece of legislation enacted since Obama took office. Wow! Amnesia is not her only problem. Whereâs the logic? Of course, she is overlooking the fact that Wâs leadership skills on that failed to get the bill passed. Before she uses that line again, she might want to read this article:

Bush (on TARP): âWhy did I sign on to this proposal when I donât understand what it does?â
http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/2009/09/15/bush-tarp/

That citation of the largest single day of demonstrations in world history before the Iraq invasion would tend to suggest levels of anxiety off the Richter scale, which fell on deaf ears, Hughesâ among others. Guess you canât remember stuff you never heard. Maybe Guiliani can help her out with what she really meant to say and provide her with a dozen or so versions of damage control.

Portrait Of The Bush EconomyOct 02, 2010
We knew it wasn't pretty; these are the gruesome details: To view clip http://www.americablog.com/2010/10/p...h-economy.html Notice Bush's list at about 1:05 of the clip — the cuts will help "businesses that create jobs," those at the "low end of the economic ladder," and "small businesses." The first isn't true unless you replace jobs with profits. The second is just a lie. And the third isn't true unless you replace small businesses with billionaires. ("Repl ...

US Economy Shrinks 0.1 Pct.,Jan 30, 2013
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy unexpectedly shrank from October through December for the first time since 2009, hurt by the biggest cut in defense spending in 40 years, fewer exports and sluggish growth in company stockpiles. The drop occurred despite stronger consumer spending and business investment. The Commerce Department said Wednesday that the economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter. That was a sharp slowdown from the 3.1 percent growth rate in t ...
