US economy shrinks 0.1 pct.,

Posted: Jan 30, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy unexpectedly shrank from October through December for the first time since 2009, hurt by the biggest cut in defense spending in 40 years, fewer exports and sluggish growth in company stockpiles. The drop occurred despite stronger consumer spending and business investment. The Commerce Department said Wednesday that the economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter. That was a sharp slowdown from the 3.1 percent growth rate in the July-September quarter. Economists said the drop in gross domestic product wasn't as bleak as it looked. The weakness was mainly the result of one-time factors. Government spending cuts and slower inventory growth, which can be volatile, subtracted a total of 2.6 percentage points from GDP. But the fact that the economy shrank at all, combined with much lower consumer confidence reported Tuesday, may raise fears about the economy's durability in 2013. That's because deep automatic government spending cuts will cut into domestic and defense programs starting in March unless Congress reaches a deal to avert them. And Americans are coming to grips with an increase in Social Security taxes that has begun to leave them with less take-home pay. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/us-economy-shrinks-01-pct-1st-time-3-%C2%BD-years;

The deliberate downsizing of the military - is quite concerning

It leaves us vulnerable to attack. We need a strong defense.

I'm not worried in the least about attacks from foreign powers. Because there aren't any. Governments are nothing more than fronts for corporate interests and those corporate interests don't tolerate war between the big boys anymore. America, the EU, Russia, China and India are the powers in the world and every other country has become a sandbox for us to play in with our latest toys. As for those five powers, war is always possible, but becomes exponentially less likely every passing day. It's not like the old days where you could pillage and get loot. Everything is digital and paper and those things are destroyed in the act of war.

For instance, we owe China far too much money for them to have any interest in attacking us. Also, we both have nukes, so a ground war would never happen. It would move right to nuclear exchange. Russia requires America as much as any other country to buy their natural gas and lithium deposits and we are tied through the European economic zone. Also, again, we both have nukes so no ground war is possible. EU and America are self-explanatory and we both have nukes. India and us are on good terms and we both have nukes. If you notice something all these have in common, they all have nukes. No two countries with nukes will ever fight long enough for any of us to have to worry. If a war starts, you might have enough time to say goodbye to your loved ones and ruin a perfectly good pair of pants (my plan at least) and then everyone dies.

As for the little guys, only a couple countries have navies. Or boats. Or access to the sea. Or knowledge of buoyancy. Mexico and Canada are the only two countries that could attempt a border crossing. Us and Mexico have already been a war for 50 years through proxy paramilitary organizations (the border guard and drug cartels) and Canadians, while violent and terrifying on the ice, are a peaceful and timid folk. Plus, the high temperatures down here would kill them in a land invasion.

So, in conclusion, the American military is obsolete as a defensive organization, hence the fact that we haven't used them in a defensive position since 1812. And admittedly we started that war too. So let's just say the Revolution. Not saying we don't need a military, but we have the largest military in the world for no apparent reason except to risk the lives of our brave men and women fighting in oil wars where we don't even get oil.

The first rule of an oil war: Don't forget the oil!

You've piqued my curiosity. I like having an opposing opinion to my own. If our ideas and assumptions remain uncontested, we can never grow or develop. We all need counter ideologies to prove the voracity of our claims and the strength of our convictions.

Lived in Florida for a while, and there is a pretty large Canadian snowbird population. The idea that they melt when exposed to heat is an old wives' tale.

But, if that's true, why do I never see Canadian tourists outside their cars?

Also, if Canadian snowbirds move to Florida, wouldn't they be American sandbirds?

inside the car is where they can do the most damage and cause the most frustration to Florida residents!!!

the only exception (re damage and frustration) being their affect on the poor early-bird wait staff, and of course a minimal gratuity for their trouble.

and I welcome all tourists as long as I can criticize at will!! ;-)

"Head in sand" and "your first two sentences" don't really tell me anything about your stance that FH is wrong, and then there's the implication that there is more.

If you can expand on it, we might all learn something.

Is the MSM even covering this - minus any spin?

Budget Deficit Shrinks By $200 BillionOct 13, 2012
It starts with the figures released in 2009, when the deficit reached a record high of $1.4 trillion. Why is the column in red? Because, thanks to fiscal years, Obama inherited a deficit of nearly $1.3 trillion from Bush/Cheney the moment he took the oath of office. This year, however, according to the official data published by the Treasury Department, the deficit is 1.089 trillion.   A big number, but going down--no thanks to those helpful Republicans in Congress. ...
