Just heard Charles Payne (who I highly respect) saying that (sm)

Posted: Jan 20, 2014

(paraphrasing) he had high hopes that BO would be able to advance the country, take it to the next level as far as race relations, as MLK would have wanted and himself did.  Instead, he uses the day to go back to one of his speeches about how "some folks don't like him because he's black."  He said there is a lot he could have done but always prefers to set us on a backward course to stir up his base.  Once again, you've nailed it, Charles.

I enjoy listening to him. While I may not agree with him on everything he says, he's a level headed man. I watched something he had on Cavuto a long time ago and it showed where he grew up and how he was raised. While I didn't agree when he said he mainly voted for O because he was black, I thought everyone has the right to their opinions. I think the perspectives he gives regarding issues are usually very good and I always enjoy listening to him. I think a lot of people have become disappointed in a man who promised everything to everyone and now he reverts back to the mentality of that speech Mr. Payne talked about.

Excellent post. Thanks for posting.

I'm completely bamboozled here. - sm

When asked why his poll numbers had dropped, the president said it was because some people didn't like him because he was black. This apparently comes from a New Yorker interview by David Remnick.

My question is wasn't he black when he was elected and his poll numbers were sky high? Why wouldn't he think it had something to do with the ACA. That's the latest news, not the fact that he's black. This is laughable.

It's always "you don't like me because I'm black". - Sick of victim mentality

"Obama lost among white voters in 2012 by a margin greater than any victor in American history. The popular opposition to the Administration comes largely from older whites who feel threatened, underemployed, overlooked, and disdained in a globalized economy and in an increasingly diverse country. Obama’s drop in the polls in 2013 was especially grave among white voters."

The above was being discussed when he made his remarks.

and read the entire article in New Yorker magazine. It was a very interesting piece. It explains a lot when you know the questions and subjects/issues brought up by the interviewer. See link below. It is true about context. Again, this is much ado concocted about nothing. I do recommend reading the article.

Too many on this board are willing to accept anything that is said that happens to support the point of view they already believe without investigating any further.

To be fair, here's the rest of his comment - sm

'“There’s no doubt that there’s some folks who just really dislike me because they don’t like the idea of a black president,” Obama said in the interview.

But he also acknowledged that his race might also help his favorability with a different set of Americans.

“Now, the flip side of it is there are some black folks and maybe some white folks who really like me and give me the benefit of the doubt precisely because I’m a black president.”'

It's still all about race and politics - Emma

[ In Reply To ..]
Why even bring up race at all? why always separate people into whites, blacks, Hispanics, Asians - can't we just be Americans? I have also felt the same way about politicians - if the news media did not always put that little (D) or (R) behind the people's names, I know that I would be better about listening to what they say instead of immediately tuning out when it's the "other" letter behind the name. If I really wanted to know if they were a D or an R, I can research and find out.
I guess that would work if everyone was on the same - page

Countless times here and in the right-wing media, voters are said to have voted for Obama just because he's black.

So, he repeats that sentiment and expresses what appears to be agreement, and he's criticized? Why can his critics say it, but when he does, he accused of playing the race card? (I'm not saying this is what you said or inferred, just what I'm seeing in general about his comments.)

If we are going to try to be blind to race (not bring it up at all), everyone has to follow the same rules.

I personally think it should be an issue that is confronted and discussed, although I love (and agree with you) the concept of race/nationality never coming into play in how we treat or preconceive people, not just as Americans, but humans. Unfortunately that is not reality and probably will never be. Hence, it has to be brought up and it has to be discussed.

When the first black president is in office, people - are going to talk about race.
[ In Reply To ..]
It's a US first, and it's a big one. And it's all about race, so yeah--it's going to be discussed...

When we have our first female president, the same thing will probably happen.
But it's him that brings it up - He needs to grow a set.

The novelty of saying "the first black president" is gone - Now we need to move on
[ In Reply To ..]
This country is never going to move forward if people don't stop focusing on his race.

We need a leader, not someone who is black or hispanic, or chinese or indian. We need a man and people need to focus on the job, not what color is skin is.

Unfortunately it's hard to do when people keep bringing it up as though they are in awe because he's black.

Most of us who voted for him don't care if he's green. We want a capable person. Not an incapable person who keeps focusing on his race and his followers who do the same thing.

The novelty has worn off. Time to move on.
While I agree that skin color should not be part - of one's decision,
[ In Reply To ..]
the fact is that people are going to talk about it (both Republicans and Democrats), because he is the first black president. You may feel the "novelty" has worn off, but you don't speak for the entire country. People are perfectly capable of discussing race while making decisions based on all the factors that are laid before them. That's the beauty of the human mind.
Regardless - the novelty has worn off - Time to look ahead
[ In Reply To ..]
If you want to join in Obama in keeping dragging our country back to racial segregation and all that, by all means go ahead.

The country is tired of hearing about this. The people who want to move forward are trying to survive. They don't care what color someone is.
It never was a "novelty" to elect our first non-white president....sm - VTMT

is a novelty.

Novelty: Something new or unusual.

The novelty is worn off.

If you are into novelty things and only want something cos its' different and fun to say, then that's your choice. Just not into fads.

I am looking forward to saying finally, a president who is qualified. Whether or not it is a man, woman, black, white, hispanic or whatever heritage they are I don't care. I would just like to finally get in someone who is qualified.

As for women presidents, I can't think of anyone who is qualified for the job, maybe Condoleeza Rice. She's very intelligent. I can think of lots of people of color I would like to see in, but again I prefer to focus my attention on people's experience. Not the color of their skin or what sex or nationality they are.

But you go for it.

I feel exactly as you do. Show me a - NPC

How is he playing the card when he is only repeating what others say - about him?
[ In Reply To ..]
Is it okay for Reps to say certain people like him or voted for him only because he's black, but not okay for him to repeat it and seemingly agree?

I don't see how that's playing the card.

And as aside, it always intrigues me when a poster says things like, "I think we know why," but I don't know why and when I ask, I don't get a response.
He knows better than that - that's a poor excuse - Mrs. Tingles - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
OMG - now I've heard it all - if so-n-so says this why can't he. Here, let me spell it out.

1. As someone who is supposed to be a president he should not be playing the race card.

2. As someone who is supposed to be a president he should not be dividing the country.

3. As someone who is supposed to be a president he should not be repeating such absurd and ridiculous remarks.

4. As an adult he should know better. And so should everyone else.

The excuse of "well Betty said this, why can't I repeat it?" (add in a whiny child's voice) brings back mom and dad's good advice. If Betty jumped off a bridge would you do it too?

BTW, white people got him elected. Now all of a sudden we're all racists?

The popular opposition to the Administration comes largely from older whites who feel threatened, underemployed, overlooked, and disdained in a globalized economy and in an increasingly diverse country. It's NOT popular. The majority of people do NOT want it! There needs to be health reform, but not a force-fed, one-sided push down one's throat. It needs to be repealed and reworked!
You are incorrect - Mrs. Tingles - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
What do you mean "I keep making blanket statements". What are all these statements you are talking about that I keep making.

Fact is there are not enough black people only to have gotten him elected. If only black people voted for him he would have lost.

White people voted to get him elected. You do realize that white people did vote for him, don't you?

...say something about us not being white, brown, black or yellow Americans, not Democratic or Republican Americans, but all Americans (obviously not a direct quote, but you get the gist), and at that moment I had such high hope. I did not vote for him (almost did), but really wanted him to succeed and had the thought that wouldn't it be historic to witness such a major step forward in race relations in my lifetime. To think that a black man who wasn't even allowed to vote not too long ago can now be president. What a major accomplishment in our society. I still think that, but I am embarrassed at how this has turned out and how he blames others (Bush and Republicans) or things (being black) for his downfalls. That is a pity.

Things aren't going his way, it's because white folks don't like his blackness. Things are going his way, it's because black folks got him there. "I'd help you poor black folk but the rich white folk won't let me because we all black and they hate our blackness."

The first time he got elected it was because he was a comfortable shade of black, not TOO black, not TOO white. The second time he got elected was because he was the blackest choice they had at the time.

He uses the race card because it gets him out of any trouble he is in, and it isn't just he who uses it. The liberals in general, white and black, love to throw it around. Don't like what he's doing, you are racist. Didn't vote for him, you are racist. Regret you voted for him, racist. Don't like the shoes he wore last Tuesday, RACIST!!!

He uses the race card because it works. It is as simple as that.

But don't take it from me. I'm a racist.
