I highly recommend Duolingo website

Posted: Mar 15, 2014

Stressed out and surfing the web?  I found out about a website called Duolingo, where you can take a language course - I'm learning French, started Spanish also.  It is wonderful to take your mind off your problems, and maybe is a "dementia preventative" like crossword puzzles are supposed to be.

So at the end of the day (month, year), instead of just surfing the web, reading political websites, etc, you actually have something to show for it:  You know some French, can read some French, figure out those French phrases and words authors like to throw into their novels, learn about French culture, learn about European languages in general.  Of course, being an MT, you do some of that :)  I really want to read some French symbolist poets in their own language - since French symbolism basically took over American ? - don't know how I would characterize American poetry over the last 50 years.  Lost maybe.  Lost in French symbolism.

I digress.

So upsetting, an anniversary of a sucide coming up - The other day I was thinking how my last day of being an MT was in March 2012, then of course, oh yeah!, I remembered this suicide, of a person I didn't even KNOW - I just knew OF them.  It's still a kick in the chest.

Therefore I allow myself to get into my pajamas before 7 pm, read a couple of "fun" novels, and basically melt the F away from reality, Syria, Ukraine, Monday's never-ending dental appointment, etc.  I realize the list of affirmations I have are like rosary beads...the repetition.  They really do help.  Plus Je suis calme.  The chat noir est calme.  Je mange une orange.  That's like the title of a painting isn't it?  I eat an orange.  I am calm.  Je mange une orange.  Je suis calme.

I love Duolingo - I'm learning Spanish

It's so addictive. Sometimes I just have to keep going with the lessons. Currently have a 73-day streak going. It's so much fun, definitely takes my mind off all this stress. Yo quiero un nuevo trabajo! So much of the language cannot be directly translated, so it's mind bending trying to figure out how Friday and Saturday nights ends up like "the nights of the Fridays and Saturdays" or las noches de los viernes y sabados. I certainly have a new appreciation for the ESL dictators trying to speak English.

Thanks, I've never heard of this. I just signed up for German - MT12

for no particular reason. I'll try French next.

Ella come una manzana. That's about as far as I've gotten with Spanish. I had Spanish back in junior high. I think maybe because I've been doing French, Spanish is easier, because they are similar languages? Maybe the hard part of Spanish is still ahead.

I really would like to get a money-making opportunity out of this someday, I have to say. I see job ads seeking people who know Spanish and English - not sure how fluent you have to be, but if it's customer service, maybe you wouldn't have to be THAT fluent...well, good luck to everyone learning a language!

Thanks WMJ - sm

I am in one of those moods today. Did some sorting, that wore me out (and it was only one desk drawer. LOL

One of those moods when you don't know what you want to do. Got tons of stuff to do (write letters, work on my story ideas, taxes, etc) but don't feel like working on anything. Haven't had a day off in weeks so was going to just go veg out and watch a movie, but I pulled up your message and now I'm learning something new and fun.

Thanks for the site.

I love throwing stuff out - wheres_my_job

Right now, I'm throwing out bottles from a shelf in the laundry room - this shelf is OVERFLOWING with old Windex bottles, etc. I just threw out one bottle, starting looking around - there are a ton of old bottles sprayers etc up there!

I threw stuff out (into recycling) until, like you said, it "wore me out."

I highly recommend vegging out and doing nothing. I've literally got 6 big projects going - absurd - isn't ONE novel enough? Isn't getting ready for craft shows or learning to paint portraits ENOUGH? I am really ridiculous.

Well, anyway, slow but steady wins the race. Hope you enjoy Duolingo. I'm realizing now Spanish, French AND Italian are all related - read a translation of Italian poet Ada Negri (late 1800s to 1940s) on the train this morning - it was before dawn, so there was a full moon up in the sky, AND in the poetry! That was a nice effect.

The Italian version was right next to the English translation, so I could recognize some of the words as being very similar to the French.

Oh well, I'm probably babbling on to myself here. I really do need to take a nap - and yes, it's not 5 pm yet and I'm in my pajamas!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Obamacare Website No Longer Says "If You Like Your Doctor YouAug 28, 2016
"If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was President Barack Obama's signature catchphrase he used to sell the Affordable Care Act to the American people. Now Obamacare's flagship website, healthcare.gov, no longer even addresses the issue. Ironically, the section in question was the first public (if indirect) admission by the Obama administration that the president's promise was less than a "guarantee." The original website contained a section entitled "Can I ...
