A black conservative group says it has obtained video of Opelousas, Louisiana, Mayor Don Cravins Sr. urging people to vote twice in the state's general election on Nov. 4.
Cravins is the father of Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu's chief-of-staff Don Cravins Jr. and a Louisiana Democratic Party operative. Cravins Jr. was present at the event, says the Black Conservatives Fund, which released the video on Monday.
In the cellphone video, reportedly shot Nov. 3 at the Charcoal Lounge, a voice identified as that of Cravins Sr. can be heard telling the crowd, "If you early-voted, go vote again tomorrow."
The crowd laughs, but Cravins Sr. goes on to say, "One more time's not going to hurt. Tomorrow we're going to elect Earl Taylor as the D.A., so he won't prosecute you if you vote twice."
Taylor was indeed elected St. Landry Parish district attorney on Nov. 4, The Daily Caller reports.
The Black Conservatives Fund said Monday that it has turned the video over to the FBI, the Louisiana secretary of state, and the state's attorney general for possible voter fraud investigations.
he group published a video last week of Cravins Jr. at the same event saying Landrieu should be re-elected to help President Barack Obama finish his agenda, The Daily Caller reported.
"He can't finish his agenda because he doesn't have people like Mary Landrieu with him, Cravins Jr. told the crowd. "She's been in office for 18 years, and in the Senate, that's what you need to get things done, and she will go on to vote with Barack Obama 97 percent of the time!"
Landrieu, along with other Democrats, has tried to shake off the image that they vote in lockstep with Obama.
The video is hosted by Louisiana state Sen. Elbert Guillory, who released a video earlier this year saying Landrieu was out of touch with the black community and used black voters only to get re-elected.
Landrieu faces Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy in a runoff on Saturday. Polls show her unlikely to be re-elected.
As they say, desperate people do desperate things. "Vote early, vote often" seems to be the Democrats' pledge.
