It's not because we care about children...

talk about making you sick at your stomach....

That is sickening! - no1joe

Political smear campaign tactics usually are. That little snippet of a retirement speech a few years ago is infuriating... until you listen to the rest of it. Then not so bad.

Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqn1rvv7Fis&feature=related

It's a long one, but it starts getting good right around 21:20 or so.

Enjoy.

Those words are bad, no matter how you slice it... - and that is what unions

[ In Reply To ..]
are about now. Power, and funding the DNC. The man meant what he said...and he said it, and I have heard the entire speech. Also heard the speech about those "bastards" on the right...and I have seen the SEIU speeches of Andy Stern and the SEIU beatdowns...

ANYONE who represents the teaching union....should NEVER say it is not because we care about the children or good schools. PERIOD.

"NOt so bad" in your eyes is still SICKENING in mine.

But thanks for weighing in.

Synopsis...after whole speech. - It is all about power and

[ In Reply To ..]
money and the kids and schools are a means to an end. And for you to try to defend that with "then not so bad."

Bad is bad...period. And what is worse is those selfish people continuing to pour more and more millions into that morally bankrupt union NOT in the interest of children OR in the interest of a good education for children, but in the interest of what it will get for THEM personally. Selfish to the MAX.

They are nothing but the depository for the DNC. They should just admit to being a political action committee, NOT a labor union, and be DONE with it. Oh but wait...they won't work. Because all those sending in those millions will spot the INSTANT there is nothing in it for them.

Like the post said...makes you sick at your stomach.

and if they don't get their way, watch out! - WI MT

My son who is a high school senior got forced into an assembly where the teachers guilt tripped the kids and blamed them (and their parents) for the teachers getting laid off because the school district is broke. They told the kids they didn't care about the teachers at all and they should have voted differently(if the 18 year olds even did vote). We parents did vote and the teachers just didn't like the outcome. All about the kids? Please. Only the union would justify 98K plus benefits to a PT PE teacher who is so overweight she teachers from a chair. All about the kids? Really?

No... it's not so bad - no1joe

[ In Reply To ..]
And it's definitely not as bad as the tactic used by political mudslinging ads or "news" sources where they take something someone said completely out of context to fit their agenda, which is what is done in the commercial in the original post. The commercial would lead one to believe that a "union boss" comes right out and says that teachers don't care about children whatsoever... just care about money. That is not what was said.

Here is what was said surrounding the quote in question, and I put what was in the commercial in (): "And that brings me to my final and most important point, which is why, at least in my opinion, NEA and its affiliates are such effective advocates. Despite what some among us would like to believe, it is not because of our creative ideas. It is not because of the merit of our positions. (It is not because we care about children. And it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power. And we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues) each year because they believe that we are the unions that can most effectively represent them. The unions that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees. This is not to say that the concern of NEA and its affiliates with closing achievement gaps, reducing dropout rates, improving teacher quality, and the like are unimportant or inappropriate. To the contrary, these are the goals that guide the work we do, but they need not and must not be achieved at the expense of due process, employee rights, and collective bargaining. That simply is too high a price to pay. When all is said and done, NEA and its affiliates must never lose sight of the fact that they are unions. And what unions do first and foremost is represent their members. If we do that, and if we do it well, the rest will fall into place. NEA and its affiliates will remain powerful, and that power will in turn enable us to achieve our vision of a great public school for every child."

If you listen to the entire speech, there is nothing in it to make one's stomach sick. You might not agree with the message, but if that gets you nauseated, that's your deal.

I listened to the whole thing yesterday - Backwards Typist
[ In Reply To ..]
It wasn't that bad but the fact that he said those words, DOES get one thinking. If he stated it, what do other unions state?

What about Trumka and the others lying to the union people? I can't give you specifics now because Trumka's speech was a few days ago.

What about Jesse Jackson? He's not union. Michel Moore? What do they have to do with this except wanting to incite the people, union or otherwise?

This whole crap has been blown out of proportion and it's time people start realizing they are being used and abused by those who don't want to lose their power or the money they rake in. They're afraid they might have to live like normal people and that scares them because they don't know how to do that. Yes, normal people are real schmucks to them.
I'm glad you listened - no1joe
[ In Reply To ..]
and I'm not surprised that you did. I'm sure we formed two completely different opinions from it too : )

The issue I have at the moment is taking the little bit of something someone said and twisting it. Personally, I cannot STAND political mudslinging ads that use this tactic constantly... both sides. It's not fair for the person being quoted, it's not fair to the viewers whose opinions might be manipulated, and it's not fair to people who might not have the big bucks to contribute but do support a candidate with a donation. If that's what they're getting for their money, it's sad. All in all, IMO, a lot of greed, lies, and manipulation (manipulation as demonstrated in this ad) has gotten us to the state we are at now, and all it does is leaves us securely polarized. You can roll with that or look into all the facts, form an opinion, and debate from there.
All one has to do is listen to more videos of - the same man and hear
[ In Reply To ..]
the cheering after things like "those right wing bastards" to know where his heart...and the heart of that "union"...lies. I realize that they never meant for those videos to be viewed by other than the NEA, but...

OOPS. Cat is out of the bag.

It IS that bad.
And one might add....perhaps some of those - rank and file members
[ In Reply To ..]
who are not liberal/socialist, and yes there are some...realized that their money is funding these power hungry greedy leftists who view them (not their money however) as right-wing bastards. They really don't intend the rank and file to hear that stuff...because...stop the presses...those right wing bastards' money spends just like the leftists does.

Yeah, I agree. Makes you want to puke.
Well thanks - no1joe
[ In Reply To ..]
for adding absolutely nothing to the point. However, if you are somehow offended by a born and raised Brooklynite calling someone the "other B word," you really need to stop being uber-sensitive. I get called much worse if I try to change lanes on the Belt. He was minding his manners, trust me.

BTW... the video was posted by the NEA. Click the "uploaded by" link. Never was a cat... never was a bag.

Of course it did not add anything to your point... - which is what by the way...
[ In Reply To ..]
that the NEA is all about great public schools and the kids? Really??

My point in the right wing bastards comment was to point out the hypocrisy. Do you honestly think every rank and file member of the NEA is a liberal/Democrat/leftist? Shouldn't they be about representing all of their members? Why not use those union dues to pay back into those great public schools they are supposedly trying to create instead of directly into the coffers of the DNC?

Not really sure how you can defend this and say it is "not so bad." Oh wait...yes I can.
Yes, and the NEA counts on the fact that... - most people will never
[ In Reply To ..]
see it (cat in the bag) and if they happen to find it, there will always be folks like you trying to stuff that cat back in that bag. Too late. Its off You Tube and on the regular airwaves now. You are going to be REAL busy trying to stuff that cat back in.

Better get busy.
Okay... - no1joe
[ In Reply To ..]
So... if I wanna keep something a secret, I post it on You Tube. Got it.
Yeah, you get it all right, and you are deflecting. - not all teachers live in the
[ In Reply To ..]
big cities. Lots of people are just trusting, even in this day and age, because they still believe in the nobility of unions and don't go on You Tube. You know that and the NEA knows that. The DNC has banked on flyover America staying asleep.

Well, they have awakened, and so sorry if that chaps you. And they aren't going back to sleep. And they are tired of people like you treating them like they can't reason for themselves.

So just keep on with the cutesy condescending comments. It doesn't further your case. People are tired of hearing they just don't understand what they are hearing and it's not so bad to hear a teacher's union saying it is not because of the kids or the great public schools which...again....if they really CARED about those things then they would be returning some of those...how did he put it...millions and millions of dollars...to those kids and to those public schools instead of the DNC coffers.

Your actions in NOT addressing those core issues speak volumes louder than the cutesy and meaningless statements.

I know you don't want to think that the flyover states' union members getting their bellies full and OH NO not joining unions and actually taking a look at their neighbor and seeing what all that"collective bargaining" is doing to THEIR lives because believe me....out here in flyover America a bunch of us still DO care about our neighbors. We aren't all about ME, ME, ME.

Hard concept for you to grasp, I know...but I think you can if you try real hard...got it?
I always try to see both sides but sometimes, it - Backwards Typist
[ In Reply To ..]
gets quite muddled if you can only find ONE side of the argument. If people listen to only one side, that's a problem and that's how manipulation works...to the detriment (sp)of those honest politicians (if there is such an animal nowadays)who may lose because of it.

I am positive we do have completely different opinions from it, but that's okay. I'm with you on the political mudslinging too. The last two elections were so bad, I almost threw the TV out!

Have a nice day. I'm going to play a game. LOL
Then why not put that tons of money INTO - making those great public
[ In Reply To ..]
schools than into those DNC coffers?? Are you serious???? You really think the NEA is invested in great public schools? I think his point was VERY clear. Keep the power, keep the money flowing directly into the coffers of the DNC, to further the socialist agenda they all want for this country. Perhaps if they did not collective bargain for more money into teachers' pockets and allowed for some of that money to actually go into those "great public schools" I might believe a word of what you are putting out here.

Again..just like their DNC/socialist buddies....their actions speak way too loud...and follow his FIRST words much more than his LAST afterthought ones.

Again...it IS that bad.
Context is everything. Thanks, Joe. - nm

Yep, context IS everything....so is the - reader's digest version.
[ In Reply To ..]
The thread through the whole thing was MONEY and POWER. If they really cared about good schools and the kids more of their money would to to THAT than into DNC coffers. When THAT happens, then I will believe it is NOT about money and power and IS about the kids and schools.

Too bad the sprinkle of lip service in this speech to the kids and the schools never makes it past WORDS. You know the old saying...actions speak louder than...well...the NEA Actions are screaming, you just have your fingers in your ears chanting I'm not listeningggggg....
I'm so glad you posted that whole speech because the blip that was used in that commercial - made me sick

I didn't know what in the world he was trying to say. I didn't know there was more to the speech.

Thanks for posting it!
