This is a complicated issue. Previously the government in Guatemala leased land to the small farmers who were able to support their families on the leased land. Then Cargill and other mega corporations leased the land from the government displacing thousands of small farmers. Not enough jobs on those mega plantations for all, not to mention cutting down the forests and displacing the people there. On top of that, there is a drought. So, people in desperation send their children abroad praying that somebody will have compassion on them. There are always two sides to every issue. Big money rules in every country even here.

[ In Reply To ..]The world is wrought with human tragedy. My mother is from Appalachia, and we are well aware of the poverty there as well. By comparison, our poor can sometimes be considered rich. I guess my point was that there is so much hatred directed towards some of those children coming here, and there is a story behind each one of them. Naturally the undesirables come along as well, but so do we have the alcoholics, druggies, and ignorant in Appalachia. I think some people have lost their ability to have compassion. And, if we look at the cause of a lot of poverty it is because they have been exploited by the super rich. Thanks for your reply.
