My ex suffers from PTSD and side effects from Agent Orange exposure. - OP

He's been battling with the VA for his benefits for years now due to having been part of an extremely classified mission. He has to wear a protective helmet even while indoors because of his frequent seizures. He may at least be able to get a seizure alert dog soon, but we're not holding our breath. It's absolutely obscene the way this country treats its veterans.

was so...terrible. And, I confess, because of many other neglects, but vets were always big.

A grandson's godfather is a professional combat soldier who was injured and has been fighting the military's attempts to abandon our responsibilities to him for years. This miserable fight for medical care, and literally survival, has shaped almost a decade of his life now. Always he can have what he needs if he just signs "here," he refuses, and his battle for what we owe him continues.

Most of these fights never happen, though, because the victims are kids who don't know what they have to to take on the military lawyers and accountants, to whom they become a net loss once they're seriously injured.

while in the intelligence arm of the military somewhere in Italy. They called PTSD "manic depression" back then. He eventually ended up in an institution where they kept him for 27 years, leaving my mom to raise 4 children by herself. After years of experimental "therapy" he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, an event that prolonged his institutionalization for another full decade. That's how I learned to hate war.

I am so grateful for the advances made in psychiatric medications that finally enabled him to be released from the VA Hospital when he was in his late 50s. He was able to live out the rest of his days in a nursing home facility where at least he had some freedom to come and go and to resume a somewhat normal existence in his senior years.

I hope you and your ex will see better days ahead. God bless you both.

I just watched a TV documentary about new war veterans coming back from Iraq. They say that every day at least 28 veterans are committing suicide. This is truly shocking news. I am wondering if their statistics are really accurate. They say that only 33% are approved to receive PTSD benefits. There is not enough money in their budget to approve all the claims.
