Dianne Feinstein evidently doesn't know much about veterans

Posted: Mar 9, 2013

She thinks PTSD started with the Iraq War. WRONG! She's old enough to know that this is a new NAME for battle fatigue, shell shock, and other names that commonly occurred in all wars with veterans. Does she really belong on an Intelligence Committee?????

She should do some research before trying to put all veterans in the mentally ill group. Heck, she doesn't even know what is considered an assault weapon, so hopefully, her bill won't see the light of day vote-wise. Watch her on the video.

At a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting on Thursday, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California) opposed an amendment to her Assault Weapons Ban legislation that would allow military veterans to continue to buy the firearms that would be banned. Feinstein says a veteran may be mentally ill and should be prevented from purchasing firearms.

SEN. DIANNE FEINSTEIN: If I understand this, this adds an exemption of retired military. As I understand our bill, no issue has arose in this regard during the 10 years the expired ban was in effect and what we did in the other bill was exempt possession by the United States or a department or agency of the United States. So that included active military.

The problem with expanding this is that, you know, with the advent of PTSD, which I think is a new phenomenon as a product of the Iraq War, it’s not clear how the seller or transferrer of a firearm covered by this bill would verify that an individual was a member, or a veteran, and that there was no impairment of that individual with respect to having a weapon like this.

So, you know, I would be happy to sit down with you again and see if we could work something out but I think we have to-- if you’re going to do this, find a way that veterans who are incapacitated for one reason or another mentally don’t have access to this kind of weapon.

I can remember when I was a kid talking about shell-shocked WWII vets. Found this link:

Please. She's extremely intelligent and could educate - us for the next week on this topic. That

[ In Reply To ..]
doesn't mean she knows everything or is right about everything. I personally probably haven't heard anyone talk for 10 minutes before disagreeing about something since I was a kid.

But to enjoy thinking the current head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who's spent decades now being personally briefed by experts on issues at hand, knows less than you? Her problem is how to help people understand part of what she does--without spending a week talking to people who aren't listening anyway.

Four pages (til I stopped) of right-wing smear on this, who are - all slinging the SAME version. Maybe go find

an honest source to find out what is happening? I didn't come across one before giving up, but I've never found pages filled by those sites on any topic who weren't spewing lies and distortions.

That's what they do. Other sources report facts.

Truly, even if she were trying to outlaw all guns, for instance, you wouldn't get the REAL story from these sites.

Why wouldn't you want to know what's really happening instead of filling your head with misconceptions? What happens to a person after even a few weeks of that, much less years?

DF doesn't know the difference between an AK-47 and a - Truthhurts

rifle with a hand grip used for hunting.

Evidently, you don't know the difference either and are not checking any sites that explain the difference between the different guns. Dianne certainly doesn't know the difference.

Also, the point she made about PTSD being ONLY SINCE since the Iraq War is absolutely untrue. Like I said before, it's been around under different names, but the real problem is that she thinks military veterans may be mentally ill and should be prevented from purchasing firearms. Problem is, would that mean EVERY veteran returning from a war or even just being discharged from the service will have to take a mental health exam????She lumps ALL veterans together.

So, here we go again putting down one source against another. You won't read Real Clear Politics but you'll read Media Matters (and I don't mean you alone). Guess it's a matter of choice between truth and hate, now isn''t it, because Media Matters, being funded by George Soros and Simon Rosenberg as late as 2010 throw out lies and hate against the Republican party and gullible people just latch onto it without proof. Don't forget Soros brought down the economies with his currency manipulation (and have no doubt that he's on the verge of doing this to the U.S.), convicted of insider trading, and made it his "life" to have Bush defeated because he hated him so much. IOW, George Soros is a thief and a criminal but if that's your cup o' tea, what can I say.

Read about us in RCP to find out who reads this site (it's too long to post here)...

I can't help but find it more than a little disconcerting that Ms. Feinstein did, in fact, refer to PTSD as something she thought was a new phenomenon due to the Iraq war. It's possible she misspoke, but I personally think it's quite a gaffe.

As for amending the bill in question, it's hard for me to see the rationale behind exempting former military personnel from gun laws.

PTSD is a FAR, FAR larger problem with this war because of - IEDs, etc. All brain-related problems, including

[ In Reply To ..]
psychophysiological, used to be greatly outnumbered by more regular medical wounds. Not any more. This war has changed that. Not only are far more occurring than before, but we're missing fewer of them--they get diagnosed.

That's what she, and all of them who have to find a way to deal with this new reality, are talking about.

PTSD is a huge problem - it's just not new

[ In Reply To ..]
our failure to recognize it in the past does not make it more serious in the present.
Umhm. "Hugeness" is the phenomenon being described - as new, not the disorder. nm

"which I think is a NEW phenomenon as a product of the Iraq War". Not to put too fine a point on it, but advent means advent.

Vietnam veterans were often treated like nutjobs when they returned home. It's my opinion that Feinstein doesn't need to contribute to a stereotype that paints veterans as mentally ill.

PTSD has, of course, been around forever, but it wasn't added as a diagnosis - to the DSM until 1980.

[ In Reply To ..]
I think that fact is what led her to make her statement, since it wasn't a "legitimate" diagnosis until then. I don't disagree that her calling it a "new phenomenon" was incorrect, though.

it has been a legitimate diagnosis since DSM-I, 1952 - Stress Response Syndrome

Democrats Side With Union Boss Over Veterans In VAApr 13, 2017
Firing Offense: Democrats are constantly bleating about the need to better serve the nation's veterans. Yet when it comes down to it, they would rather bow to their union masters than allow the VA to fire workers who aren't doing their jobs. This bill would let the Veterans Affairs secretary fire someone and not have to wait a month for the person t ...
