Object to erasing OUR history? Statues and Honor?

Posted: Aug 20, 2017

J. Marion Sims was a gynecologist in the 1800s who purchased Black women slaves and used them as guinea pigs for his untested surgical experiments. He repeatedly performed genital surgery on Black women WITHOUT ANESTHESIA because according to him, "Black women don't feel pain.” Despite his inhumane tests on Black women, Sims was named “the father of modern gynecology”, and his statue currently stands right outside of the New York Academy of Medicine. #FightSupremacy It has become OUR duty, for whatever reason, this moment in OUR history to recognize and rectify the errors of our ways. We MUST stop honoring these blatantly racist acts. Yes, these actions occurred, but NO, we no longer need statues to these actors. The racism is in the fact that the people who knew how they came by their "positive" result (dubious for many with Robert E. Lee, but locally positive?, which is where statues are located), felt they could ignore the treatment of blacks, as they were inconsequdntial, subhuman, owned, animals----THERE IS THE RACISM. We NOW are speaking against that racism. We no longer will tolerate honoring those with that past. I understand that this comes dangerously close to questioning honoring a number of people in our lives, and no one is suggesting we burn down Monticello and replace with a plaque. No one is suggesting we re-write the history books ( as Stalin was known to do). We want the ACTUAL history to be reported. If it makes people uncomfortable, so be it.;

Doctors who perform abortions say the same thing - about babies, they don't feel pain.

Muslims sold blacks into slavery. Why do they get a free pass?

You missed the entire point. - Somehow I am not surprised

[ In Reply To ..]
You are welcome to go to the Middle East, find the statues to these evil slsve sellers, make your case and tear them down.

As to cells and blood masses feeling pain, NO IT does not.

Later development, no more than circumcision or hunger...let 'em cry it out.

Seems you are the one missing - the point - Not surprised

YOU ARE NOT EQUIPPED OR EDUCATED TO KNOW WHAT A BABY BEING MURDERED FEELS. What arrogance!
How crafty and creative - Mmm

Must depend on your science - Real Science

The science of fetal pain is highly complex. Most scientists who have expressed views on the issue have said they believe that if fetuses can feel pain, the neurological wiring is not in place until later, after the time when nearly all abortions occur.

This is a spiritual warfare. There is going to be a race war. - While the left is busy tearing down

Confederate statues, look at Chicago this weekend.

At least 33 people were wounded, 6 fatally, black on black crime.

The statues didn't do it.

That's a big issue. - Sm

[ In Reply To ..]
And the socioeconomics related to racism are a big part of "Chicago."

One is not exclusive of the other. That white people by the thousands feel more comfortable protesting and calling for removal of a statue than standing at 59th and Halsted protesting black on black crime surprises you?

You didn't like BLM protests...it made you nervous when that many people got together to make black issues discussed.
Of course I feel nervous around angry mobs, color - doesn't matter. You need a PET

report complete truths, the good stories along with the bad.

As a consequence there is going to be a lot of destruction and probably death.

Anthony Johnson, a black man, was the first slave - holder. After the Civil War,

Lincoln was going to let the slaves go back to Africa but Frederic Douglas, a black man and friend, talked him out of it.

You have to teach the good with the bad. Otherwise you don't get the truth.

Take down their statues too - Applause sign

[ In Reply To ..]
Unless you are advocating the status quo, cuz there were bad actions by black people, so we're even, or some such nonsense.

Are the vigilante mobs going to tear the statue of - of Stant Waite, the Cherokee who

The Outlaw Josie Wales has a character called "Lone Watie" played brilliantly by Chief Dan George. If you've never seen the film, Lone Watie is a likable character and his backstory sounds familiar.

Will they go to Gettysburg? That's where the war turned around. I doubt they will.

Would this be happening if Hillary won?

This is about tearing down America.

Yes it is and Trump is right on schedule. Once we all - fighting each other he will sell

everything we have left to the highest bidder. That's who he has always been. He WILL profit

Saying history will be erased is just not true. - This is about choosing

[ In Reply To ..]
with which side of history you will stand.

After all the statues and symbols are gone, then what? - Is that what this is really about?

[ In Reply To ..]
Or is it about tearing down America and getting rid of the Constitution?

Then after that happens, what next?

Read up on the French Revolution.

Well, that comment could be a treatise - Answer

[ In Reply To ..]
Shot gun approach, eh?

Here goes:
US is SUPPOSED to have a fluid law system. There is room to AMEND the Constitution, if need be, or drfine more precisely. Society has changed greatly since 1787. We have noted those changes with amendments and WILL CONTINUE to do so.

You seem to object to those bringing up subjects that need to be changed.

Statues leaving is not constitutional, but sure is going to mess up a lot of family vacation photos!

Born and raised in the south. My heritage - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
From Atlanta, GA, now live in Richmond, VA. Had 3-great uncles who fought and died in the civil war. This is noted on the grave stones. Not proud of the fact that they did so, but that was part of their history. Do not claim this to be MY history. I climbed Stone Mountain many times, saw the 3 engraved figures there. No one ever told me who they were or why they were there. There are over 700 confederate statues in the State of Virginia. I have only seen the ones in Richmond on Monument Avenue. Never took the time to see who they were. They are just there. They mean nothing to me or my life. They are not there because they owned slaves. They are there because they lead in the south in the civil war. Shameful part of this country's past, but that is what happened - unlike Washington, Jefferson, or anyone else who owned slaves. Washington and Jefferson fought for the country, not against it.

That being said, I do believe the civil war should continue to be taught in schools forever! I do believe all of the confederate museums should remain forever! That is where our history is. A statue celebrates something. These do not, but being part of history they should perhaps be put at the confederate cemeteries or museums where they will remain history and not be vandalized and destroyed. Those who want to see them will, and those do who don't will not. Removing the statues do not remove our "history or heritage." You can't wipe slavery out of our past and it should never be forgotten. Do you see any statues of Hitler in Germany?

I do not think the country's issues are about the statues at all, but goes deeper. I thought we had made significant gains but evidently we have stepped back about 50 years. While everyone is entitled to free speech in this country, do not think you will not have violence over the neo-Nazis and KKK exercising their first amendment. While they were standing outside the Synagogue, FULLY ARMED and wearing Nazi garb, in Charlottesville on Sunday morning after the demonstration, the Jewish people inside were hiding and afraid to leave. An unknown veteran watched the front door while the Rabbi escorted them out the back door. No one said a word to them, but they were terrified. This is the definition of terrorism. After these demonstrators marched through the streets of Charlottesville the night before with anti-Jewish chants, we can probably never know just how scared these people were. It breaks my heart.

We need new rules/laws about these type of demonstrations as well as the people who protest them. When all the statues are gone, right or wrong, when and what will they demonstrate about then?

I personally think this is just a deflection of many urgent matters that need to be addressed for ALL Americans right now, infrastructure, taxes, health care, education, etc.

For the white "supremacists," and the KKK, do you think the names of African Americans who fought and died in Vietnam should be removed from the memorial in Washington DC so we can remain separate? Do you think we should remove all the bodies of people of color from the Arlington Cemetery. When/if we go to war again, or attacked on our soil, do you think all of the men of color should stay home and let YOU and your families go fight?
I would bet that the percentage of people in - mt

I think this stuff is being brought out by the left, who want to destroy Trump and his presidency and take him off his agenda.

It's a great question and shows the real motive here. - Martin Luther King statues will have

Hate to employ such an overused cliche', but you should read Ms. Sanger's own words before proclaiming it's parroting. You might try to employ a more intellectual argument that she's been taken out of context because that might lead to debate that is more constructive.

"Sanger advocated 'a stern and rigid policy of sterilization and segregation to that grade of population whose progeny is already tainted, or whose inheritance is such that objectionable traits may be transmitted to offspring.'"

If that's not advocating eugenics, you have some 'splaining to do.
