Hunger and Children in America: a Slow and Steady Starvation

VIDEO: One child out of every five in the U.S. suffers from hunger.

AUTO START: ON OFF

A little 2-year-old boy came to the hospital hungry, not just for dinner, but every day of his young life. He is smaller than he should be and his organs, including his brain, are not developing fully. And he lives in Boston, one of America's most prosperous cities.

Doctors at Boston Medical Center's Grow Clinic, which provides assistance to children diagnosed with "failure to thrive," say they have seen a dramatic increase in the number of children they treat who are dangerously thin.

"What's so hard is that a lot of families are working so hard," said Dr. Megan Sandel, an associate professor of pediatrics and public health at BMC. "They are working jobs. They are earning money and their dollars just don't go far enough."

That is life for nearly 15 million children living in poverty in the U.S., according to the National Center for Children in Poverty.

Some of their stories were depicted in first-person picture stories by 40 women in Philadelphia who documented their family life for a project called "Witnesses to Hunger." It was a graphic record of what it is like to live in crowded bedrooms and open a largely empty refrigerator and pantry that is nearly bare.

Pauline S. told ABC News that while she had some macaroni, Spaghetti-Os, noodles, and peanut butter and jelly in her pantry tonight, the food would be gone by next week.

"It really hurts being a mother to see and to feel the hurt for my children," she said. "Not being able to give them what they want and not being able to have everything that other children have -- it hurts a lot."

The number of children living in poverty in the U.S. is up nearly 20 percent from 2000, according to the NCCP, because of higher unemployment and foreclosures. It's a problem across the nation but children are the worst off in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. They fare better in New Hampshire, Minnesota and Massachusetts.

U.S. food banks say they face slow and steady starvation rather than sudden African famine.

"We talk about global hunger and we have extended tummies and we have sad eyes," said Marie Scannell, executive director of the Food Bank of Somerset County in New Jersey. "That's not what you'll see. For instance, in Somerville, N.J., you'll see sadness in the children's eyes. That's really the worst part for us."

Across the country, nearly 5.5 million children live in families that have lost homes to foreclosures and 8 million children live in families where at least one parent has lost a job, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Unemployment And/Or Low Wages? - Whatever

[ In Reply To ..]
The article mentions the greater unemployment causing hunger in children, but I think there's probably also more jobs that don't pay enough. I think food and rent is rising faster than the minimum wage. Fortunately or unfortunately, I don't have any children, but 1 cat only. I can barely afford to pay rent and eat with minimum wage for just myself. I think there is more low-paying jobs because of so much outsourcing. There should be a law, a quota on the amount of outsourcing is allowed by businesses (especially big businesses).

I know. As you say. A doctor does mention many parents who - work but are still too poor to feed the children.

income, like yours, is very, very low these days, DH robbing Peter to pay Paul. Thank goodness we don't have small children to worry out. The stress alone will take decades off these poor parents' lives, but of course it's the children who are really in trouble.

I used to drive by inner city schools sometimes in my work and see kids and teenagers and think that, whatever else they might face, at least they were strong and healthy. That's not the case anymore. These little ones' bones and brains can never make up for the deficits of these "minimum wage" developmental years.

We call my mother-in-law's generation the greatest. I suspect our grandchildren will call ours the worst generation. We've failed to meet so many responsibilities.

I'd love to go into every food stamp home (not the surfers - they should just be cut off), but the homes of the people who are really in need and see how they spend their food stamps. Like, do they buy ready-made meals or cook from scratch. Bottled water is a luxury, yet poor people spend their money on it, then run out of stamps. Waste. Cut the surfer guy and his ilk off at the knees.
What do you mean by ready-made meals? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Anything prepared/cooked is not allowed on food stamps. If you mean things like Hamburger Helper, canned soups, or the like as opposed to making things from scratch, a lot of that stuff is cheaper than from scratch, and forget the 5 portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day for a family of four.

I live alone and do make a lot of things from scratch and it's really not that cheap. I spend at least $50 a week just on the recommended 5 portions of daily fruit and vegies. Multiply that by 4. Families on food stamps pretty much have to buy cheap "filler" options rather than fresh and whole.

And a lot of families who are on food stamps actually do work, they just don't make enough. $7.50 an hour does not go far. So if they're working it's not like they have nothing to do but bake fresh bread or craft their own pasta all day long.

who might be buying water wouldn't be doing it to wave a brand-name label around in conversation, they'd be doing it because the plumbing in their rentals was delivering undrinkable water.

As for the odd case where someone does buy herself and the kids Perrier instead of food, that just proves the need for social programs to feed those children all by itself. It's NOT an excuse to refuse to help.

Dysfunctional parenting from mental illness and personality disorders is epidemic--as it ALWAYS has been. All main religions have made caring for those who can't take care of themselves--for whatever reason--a key moral issue for thousands of years.

BTW, I can accept, and even like, people who don't bother to make up lies and excuses for not giving to those in need. People who flat out say they don't care and would prefer poor people just stay out of their sight are honest. You have to respect at least that about them.

But the often strident and angry hypocrisy of people who won't admit what they are and keep making up endless reasons why recipients are undeserving and social programs are all corrupt is very hard to stomach.

One solution. Cut aid to Egypt and Pakistan and feed our poor and elderly. - Oldie

I consider myself about as - liberal as they come,

[ In Reply To ..]
maybe even a socialist, but I don't think it's anyone's god given right to have children they can't afford. I say give them free birth control, and if that fails, free abortions if they can't support children.

FAR more effective, tho, than free pills is higher pay - for full-time work. The prospect of

[ In Reply To ..]
a better life for children and themselves has been proven again and again to cause women to choose that path and have fewer children to accomplish it.

Despair raises birth rates. Of course it shouldn't be that way, but basing any system on asking humans not to be human would guarantee its complete failure.

BTW, just look at this forum, roiling with un-self-controlled human activity from people who mostly are not currently doing a really good job of taking care of themselves. Although some of us have sensible reasons for finishing up our work lives in MT, those who don't but are still here are hardly the best qualified around to expect others to raise themselves. If most here weren't averaging menopausal or post, there'd probably be a well above average pack of new babies to go with the under-educated/low-income lifestyles behind a lot of these screens.

The Inside Story Of The Hunger Strike And Force-Feeding At Guantanamo By Ben Armbruster on May 30, 2013 at 1:34 pm (Credit: Army Sgt. Joseph Scozzari) The number of detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison who the military says are participating in the current hunger strike has reached record-highs this week; and perhaps more troubling, the number of hunger strikers the military says are being force-fed — a practice experts say violates international law and&nbs ...

Has Anyone Ever Baked A Cake In The Slow Cooker?Dec 11, 2015
Our oven is broke and I don't have a toaster oven.  The only thing I have is a slow cooker, foreman grill and waffle maker (the latter two of course will not work). LOL I am so craving some chocolate cake and I just found a recipe for mocha oatmeal cake, or brownies, cobbler or whatever. I've made cornbread in the slow cooker and it came out really good, but what about regular cakes?  Has anyone ever done one and if so do you know how long you would cook it for.  There ...

Expired Children Drinks Jul 01, 2013
This weekend at a fireworks celebration in our town someone donated drinks to the children. You know those little flavored plastic bottles, maybe 6 inches tall. Some had a plastic cap that you pullled and it unraveled and came off, some had tin foil.  One child was heard to say "Hey there must have been some paper in my drink".  He evidently swallowed something.  Another person looked at the container and it had clearly printed an expiration date of 2009 on it and when inspected s ...
